Cars Protection Plus is a company that sells limited car warranty insurance through used car dealerships only. The company has a contract that sounds fantastic and appears to cover all major engine and power train components of a car or truck. The insurance requires that upon a failure of any covered part the person take their vehicle to a repair facility and obtain an authorization number. Once this is obtained the person is required to pay the repair facility all cost in the diagnostics of the problem. This includes the customer paying for all tear down costs. The word "diagnostics" is the key word interpreted by CARS that allows them to deny any claim. CARS requires that a mechanic give them the "exact cause" of any failure in order to authorize a claim. It is not enough that the covered part failed - you have to also tell CARS "why" it failed.  A mechanic will always find a loose bolt a worn gasket or some other such issue during a tear down of a used vehicle.  This is the trick!  Once the mechanic mentions any extraneous part like a loose bolt or worn gasket - CARS will use this as the "why" the covered component or insured part failed.  They then deny the claim. It is simple as that.

CARS has been sued time and time again. The good news is that CARS usually looses the case. See, e.g., Tang v. CARS Protection Plus, Case No.: 2006AP1540 (Wisconsin); Matthew Van Eman v. CARS Protection Plus, Court of Michigan Appeals; Adam Whetzel v. CARS Protection Plus, Lake County Ohio.  In addition to the many cases it is clear that CARS settled a case with the Pennsylvania's Attorney General in June 2006 for 25,000.00 for failing to honor warranties and for misrepresenting important tems of its warranty products.

The case of Tang v. CARS is really illustrative as to how CARS treats its customers and exactly how they interpret their warranty language in their favor and against the customer.

Do not purchase this limited coverage from your used car dealer. It is an absolute scam.  One can easily find numerous examples of the complaints against CARS on the internet.  You can do a search for the Tang v. Cars case or any of the others mentioned above to educate yourself on the manner in which CARS uses the language of their warranty to deny any and all claims.

C.A.R.S Protection Plus Auto Warranty - WASTED MONEY

AUTHOR: Mr. - ()

I am a consumer who reads everything to comprehension, and therefore read every line of the warranty information provided before signing (front and back).  I also asked questions of interpretation and clarity before signing it.

I have worked as a document reviewer for legal offices in multiple states. (i.e., prosecutors offices, and multiple private practices)

C.A.R.S language is set to be as ambiguous as possible. I purchased the warranty for one of my sons after reviewing all information and language in the contract, and before signing. We have had two warranty submissions and below have been the results.

First, THE POLICY HAS NOT, IS NOT WORTH THE MONEY. If anyone is considering this company KEEP AND SAVE YOUR MONEY. Pay for your repairs yourself. You will come out much better.

We purchased the top policy offered in 8-2011 for 48 months/unlimited mileage. We paid cash for the vehicle and the policy. Originally the policy price was over $2,000 but because we were paying cash for everything we negotiated it down to $1,995.

It has a $0 deductible. In two separate submissions to this company, three years apart, THEY NEVER FULLY COVERED ANYTHING STATED. Each time they only covered part of the issue. The first time on a $2753 bill they only covered $285. We paid the difference. Although it states covered on the warranty paperwork. The second time a couple years later the total was $1665. They only covered $703.

It left us and the repair shops with our jaws dropped. Basically if your vehicle has any issue under the hood that doesn't start inside a covered component, they will be able to slide out from under the charges. If the issue starts externally on any covered part they might cover some of it.

Next having their rental benefits didn't benefit either. You're reimbursed per 8hrs of actual labor time. So, if the actual work time is less than 8hrs, not shop time without your vehicle, you have to pursue a rental on your own without reimbursement. Which is what we did. WE RENTED OUR OWN VEHICLE BECAUSE "IT DIDN'T QUALIFY FOR REIMBURSEMENT."  They use a website to figure repair hours and ours was 3hrs total.

The warranty company and repair shop both told us that the parts couldn't get to the shop till next week, and that would be the soonest. So, because they don't pay for "down time" regardless of reason. We ended up paying for a rental as well as $961 for 2nd repair.

$1995 policy + $2,467.35 repair #1 + $961 repair #2 + rental car. We ended up coming out of more money having the policy, than had we paid for all repairs ourselves. COST TOTAL $5,423 TO HAVE POLICY, $4,418 IF DIDN'T HAVE POLICY. we lost $1,005 w/policy. NOT WORTH IT...

If you can afford a policy save your money and put it aside to assist you with your repairs. WASTED MONEY...

And...it continues....

AUTHOR: Kenneth Blevins - ()

I am the author of the original report against Cars. There is no question in my mind that Cars will continue to engage in this same conduct. It is simply a matter of money. They get the money for this so-called coverage and make it both expensive and impossible for a covered person to benefit from the so-called coverage. The contract itself is a SCAM and written in such a way to allow CARS to get rich legally. People simply do not read this lengthly and confusing contact. It is apparent the owners of Cars are not ashamed of what they do. They continue to do it. You are correct when you state that the contract is in violation of the Moss decision. The requirement that you pay for diagnosis violates the decision. The good news is the Moss decision allows for attorneys fees which should get them sued more often. Good luck to you. It is my hope people will read these complaints (do their research) before purchasing this useless insurance coverage.

Never buy CARS Warranty. They don't stand behind their coverage!

AUTHOR: Reidel - ()

I have a 3 year Value Plus Limited Warranty plan with CARS Protection Plus. I bought the truck January 2012 and filed my first claim on the truck on in January 2013. Truck was taken into shop and I was told it has a blown head gasket. Looked at my warranty for covered components and head gasket is covered. After a tear down at my expense cause CARS makes you have a complete tear down of engine, no matter what. CARS claims they will not pay for the repair cause they need to know the components that failed. I even hired a attorney and he sent Cars a letter to let them know we will be bring a lawsuit if they dont pay and they are still stuck on "we can prove the components that failed." It is now the end of March and I just got my truck back and it was in the shop since January!!! C.A.R.S. had utilized this pattern of conduct as a mechanism to avoid honoring the insurance, as such fees are cost prohibitive, and that forcing customers to pay the fees will compel them to seek other means of repairing the cars. By requiring that these tests be performed, Defendant is essentially forcing its customers to pay for these diagnostic fees to confirm both what is wrong with the car (many mechanics may be capable of determining without a diagnostic test) and why the vehicle is broken.Even though a car warranty required the buyer to pay for diagnosis of vehicle, it violated the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act for a warrantor to require the buyer to pay for determining the cause of the vehicle's need for repair.

Here is some of my story above but i highly recommend that you do NOT do business with this company. They dont stand behind there covered parts. You will go thru hell dealing with them. The owner of this company should be very ashamed of himself by taking innocents peoples money. The warranty is suppose to offer piece if mind but its only a big headache. This company will screw you over and doesnt care. I hope that this company will be closed one day. Be sure to do your research about cars, you will see many bad reports and lawsuits. If you are a customer of theirs do your research as well. Make sure you are in the right on covered parts and look up different laws, ect and see legal advise if you need too. Best wishes to all of you that are going threw problems with this company. If you are not a customer of CARS please stay away!!!!

I also am a cars protection plus client

AUTHOR: 2004Dodge - (USA)

I am also a cars protection plus client, And I can tell you that they will used junk yard parts to fix your car and also make you wait a week to have your car fixed and will NOT pay for a rental car for the entire period,  they will only pay for the repair time listed in the manual named in their contract. Also they will not pay the repair shop for all work done. They claim it is not necessary for the

item broken. They also make you and the repair shop wait while they resource the part as cheap as possible and than have it shipped to the repair shop by UPS ground. I have had two other warranty companies in the past and they were great, I received this warranty through the dealership I purchased my vehicle from. This car protect plus warranty is worthless,

Facts are FACTS

AUTHOR: Kenneth Blevins - (United States of America)

It is apparent you are associated with CARS or are the counsel for CARS. Your BBB status is good for now but I do not honestly look for that to continue with the business practices of CARS. My claim was outright denied and outright denied by management. I called and called and called and every person I spoke with told me that my claim was denied and that "we deal with hundreds" of these claims everyday. Your Claim is denied!  Funny how my lawyer wrote one letter and CARS position changed! All the sudden "we have an offer for you!"  I did accept the offer which paid my claim after it was denied over and over! My suggestion to anyone who has a denied claim - Get yourself a lawyer! Mention to your lawyer that the Magneisum-Moss Act will pay the attorney fees. If you read the terms of the contract as CARS wants it read they would NEVER pay any claim. Don't fall for their scam -get yourself a lawyer!

Information by writer is distorted.

AUTHOR: David - (United States of America)

I do not agree with the accusations made by the writer. CARS currently maintains an A+ rating with the BBB of Western Pennsylvania. We honor every contract that we accept for coverage. Sometimes, consumers do not read the warranty before they buy it from the car dealer and are not aware that the warranty is a limited warranty and not a "bumper to bumper" warranty as it was falsely represented to them by the car dealer.

The procedures set forth in the warranty are clear and unambiguous. If a consumer follows the procedures set forth in their warranty, there should be no issue with them understanding their rights and obligations. When we receive a complaint, we investigate it and try to resolve any dispute with the consumer.
