Internet scams

AUTHOR: Wyatt - ()

Supportataol.com may possibly be a legitimate AOL domain or an elaborate type of phishing website.

In general, online scams and phishing start by an email, normally a link saying something along the lines of "your computer has a virus and we can remove it!" and a link along side it.  Rule of thumb here, you didn't ask for it, don't do it.

If you found the site on your own from AOL then you may have just faced what most consider a rouge agent. Remember that any legitimate web based support service will never signifigantly urge or beg you to pay them and that if they ask for western union, money pack, or similar payment methods they are certianly a scam.  The safest way to conduct busness for online or phone transactions is to pay via PayPal (never send money as a gift, ask them to send an invoice) or Google Wallet (again, ask for an invoice).

If in doubt, the easiest way to tell if a business is legitimate is to ask what State and County they are registered in and search for records registering their business name.  To avoid the possibility of a stolen business identity, call the number on the public listing.

If you installed software from these people or they knew information about you that you did not provide, the odds are high that you may have been given a key-logger or backdoor Trojan. Viruses of this type are designed to steal identity information as you type them in.  If you need help on this matter, small family owned computer shops like the one linked here may be your best bet.

The owner of that scam website appears to own and operate a handful of other domains from that same server.

Here is that servers IP address:

Here are the other websites hosted on that server:

  • aiol.com
  • cwk.net
  • aol-find.com

Currently supportataol, aiol and aol-find seem to be passing through directly to AOL.  This appears to be an attempt to conceal the domains identity as a phishing site until the attacker is ready for victims.

I hope this information can help.
