Chase Bank Lies to customers with no recorse- clears fraudulent checks...no verification! Las Vegas Nevada
i have become a victim of a "craislist" scam and a very well planned one at that. Thanks to the banking system though for making this possible for these predators.
I had received a check for the sale of furniture. The check came and was for more than the amount I was selling the itmes. I was told that it was for the shipping costs and if i could cash the cehck and send the over amount to the shipping agent. Seemedodd to me, so i searched the internet for the company and all aspects and everything seemed to be ok. I deposited the check into my chase bank account, since there was not a Capital one bank in my area (this is the bank the check was written from). An itiial hold was placed on the check, which i expected but was a long hold placed for 10 days. Within 2 days, the hold was released and the funds showed available in my account. I was hesitant to remove any money and then proceeded to call the bank to verify that the check was in fact good, and nothing would come back on me if money was removed from my account. I was sent to finance, who then verified the check while i was on the phone and assured me that the funds were good and i could proceed in removing the cash from my account. I did just that they next day, and sent the money to the shipping company. The next day i heard from a friend that they thought it was a scam, but that i might be ok since i verified the funds with my bank. I then called my bank once again, and explained to them that i thought it might be a scam, and was told that while i was on the phone with them, they verified the funds for the check TWICE and it showed to be good, the money was in the customers account and the only way it could come back on me, was if the person cancelled the check in the next 10 business days. This was the first i heard, but was assured i should be fine since they have verified the funds and that i was over reacting.
Well, the check came back and the bank was very quick to remove the money from my account immediatley. When i called the first time to ask what the reason for the return was, i was told that there was no money in their account? hows coudl this be since they have just verified more than 4 times as early as the morning before? I finally went to a branch and spoke with a manager who was the first person to try and get me any answers. She called Capital one and spoke with a rep there, which then verified that the account number on the check was not even a valid account number, and had someone called to verify the check they would have been told from the beginning that this was not a valid account number, and had never been??? She then called her corporate to see if there was any recourse for me since i had tried to use the bank repeatedly to verify the check and was lied to multiple times. She was told sorry...nothing that they could do?
Basically for anyone to know, the banks DO NOT verify funds on a deposit. They go by the fact that if that check comes back, if you ahve the funds in your account to cover it, they will release the hold and charge you once it comes back, they even stated if it comes back aAFTER the 10 days, they will still charge you? So i guess you are never safe. i am out the money and now know, that i can not trust my own bank, and will be given the wrong information and the bank still will not be held accountable. THEY DO NOT VERIFY FUNDS IN OTHER BANKS and those banks will not talk to you unless you are a customer, or you can get your bank to call them, which until i went to the branch none of the reps, even in the fraud department would help me.
Sorry this all falls on you, and because of this is why do many people become easy prey because they know the banks are not checking!
