Against the Americans With Disabilities Act I was let go from City Electric Supply 2/13/2008 for refusing to put off a much needed surgery for an on the job injury that limited my working abilities. The only reason I was told I was let go was because I did not put the surgery off till after inventory. Yet in official documents I recieved from City Electric I was terminated for "Allowing materials to leave the building without a ticket". This was not the case at all. The manager of the Hoover branch does this all the time so I suspect he put that off on me to cover his own rear end. Thankfully I have the termination conversation on a cd I burned from my recorder and am currently seeking relief via the EEOC. But this is not the only happening of discrimination City Electric has done. The Birmingham East branch fired a gent because of his limited physical abilities after a surgery and due to his age. He has also filed with the EEOC and is awaiting relief. The company does not care about it's employees and uses them till they are broken and discards them like common refuse. Not a good company to work for at all in my opinion so steer clear of them. Sure they will promise you the world but never come through and end up abusing you and tossing you to the side.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Unfair treatment

AUTHOR: Sharon - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, September 29, 2011

I worked for City Electric Supply in South Florida for 4 years. When I was hired I was told I would make one amount when I got my first check it was for $3/Hr less. I was promoted to Store Manager fairly quickly, but once again found to be underpaid for the position. I found that the women were being paid a lot less then the men. I was being paid $9/hr as a counter person while others were being hired at $14/hr. When I was store manager I found men were being paid nearly $3000/ year more with no experience.

I also just received paperwork in the mail yesterday from a settlement against CES for Store Managers, due to being put on salary when legally they should be hourly. We worked nearly 20 hours of overtime per week, not including the inventory week where we put in sometimes 70- 80 hours.

In 2009 we were given pay cuts, some were very dramatic, we were told at the time it was company wide, but found out later it was not. After they cut our drivers pay $3/hr down to $9/hr, he was let go a month after. When we hired a new driver they started him at $12/hr.

My Branch Manager had to have back surgery right before inventory, and they gave him the hardest time about doing it prior to inventory. But he needed it because he could barely stand or walk. They did not fire him, luckily.

This company does not care about their employees. It is not just in one area, I have heard it from many employees nationwide. They worked us like dogs, Treated us like dirt, and they don't care because they know they can hire someone else to  do the same thing.

I was let go 3 days before Christmas, and the ladies in the group office were all let go as of December 31, 2009. This just shows how much they care for their employees.

This company definitely discriminates.

The truth about City Electric

AUTHOR: Kjg1982 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, June 21, 2008

I believe this story is typical of what happens at a alot of companys and is the result of poor management. The way City Electric is setup each store has its own Manager that is responsible for all decisions made in the branch. Obviously these choices were made by these INDIVIDUALS and not anyone from corporate. I believe throwing around a blanket statement like "the company does not care about its employees" is unfair considering there are over a 1000 stores worldwide and every branch is different. If I went to a walmart and a cashier was rude to me I would not say "Dont go to walmart all empoyees are rude and dont care about customers". This was an incident that occurred at ONE location that obviously has a terrible manager. I am the manager of a store in Texas and I would never do something like this to an employee. Never would any of the managers I work closely with either. I have met the owner of City Electric also and I guarantee you he would never condone such behavior.
So while I am very sorry for this persons experience and agree totally that he was wronged, the simple fact is blaming an entire company for the actions of one individual is unfair and irrational. Especially when you consider this company gives the cheapest health insurance you can get nowadays, free life insurance and an excellent 401k. This alone proves they do care and want to keep their employees.
Anyone looking to work for or do business with this company I suggest you do your own research and form your own opinion, before taking what this report says for fact. I think everyone who has been working for awhile has had an experience with a crappy manager before and realized his actions probably werent known by his superiors. No company as big as this would condone such behavior and risk their company reputation. I really hope the author of this report receives compensation for the way he was treated and gets his old boss fired. I also hope he does not bad mouth a company that isnt to blame and ruin the reputation of those of us who try hard to make a great work environement for all our employees.
