In responce to a listing in ebay, I bought what was said to be a rebuilt subaru 1.8L engine.

Once installed the engine made excessive valve train noises. When I called to complain about it I was told at this time that they do not replace the cam, followers(aka rockers), or the lifters.

Anyone that knows about rebuilding engines knows that you can't re-use cams, followers, and lifters.

When I demanded the new parts or a refund they broke off all contact and to this day have not responded to emails or phone calls. I am either put on "eternal hold" or outright hung-up on.

If you sold the engine...?

AUTHOR: Emily Johnston - (USA)

...then how do you know it has failed?  I sense something not "right" here.  Do you, or do you not, still have the engine?  If you don't, why are you still attacking our company?

To further address one of your previous complaints, please read this.  The following is a direct quote from Jasper Engines website: CAMSHAFTS-Camshafts are inspected for wear, dimensional accuracy and gauged for straightness. Camshaft lobes are carefully machined to correct specifications. Each shaft is Parco-Lubricated to improve lubricant adhesion, especially during break-in. Any camshaft not meeting JASPER's exact specifications is replaced.  We do the exact same thing to our engines.

You, sir, are accusing us of not being honest and not actually rebuilding our engines.  But you fail to understand one thing: a Subaru engine can not even be re-ringed without completely disassembling the entire engine which also means you must split the block.  When the block is split, all rings, bearings, seals, etc. MUST be replaced.

As to this particular engine failing due to a "lifter bore", how do you mean this?  This is a non-interferential engine: even if the lifter froze or the bore rusted, it would not damage the rest of the engine.

Further, it is the responsibility of the owner to make sure an engine has coolant, not just water, in it.  And obviously, since the block was split, no "water" was left in it, especially in an area where oil moves, but NOT coolant.

Before you make hasty accusations, you really should know the mechanical facts behind your erroneous suppositions.

Cams and Lifters

AUTHOR: Bubba Lee - (Canada)

WOW, missinformation about modern cams and lifters litter this report and the rebuttal.

So the "Roller lifters" and "ROller" Rocker arms used on most (Read all Subarus) will easily last two engine rebuilds under normal use.

They are as close to failure and wear free as it is possible to build by humans.  A simple visual inspection of the components will show if they are re-useable.

The Components listed as changed in the Original Authors rebutal are what is required to provide a solid reliable rebuild.
While the explination of the rebuiled is a little lacking in technical detail, at least his statements are plausible.

engine failure

AUTHOR: Km - (USA)

The engine has now failed.

The problem is in the head, the lifter bore failed. Upon closer inspection, this was caused by a lifter bore liner that was eroded away by water in the engine. The water had to be there a long time to cause this much dammage and not contain any antifreeze.

Is is certian now that this company only "cleans up" wrecking yard engines with a few new bearings and outer parts.

NOT AS ADVERTISED REBUILT ENGINE WAS JUST A RE-GASKETED,RE-BEARINGED,RE-RINGED USED ENGINE WITH A FEW TIMING PARTS AND AN OIL PUMP

AUTHOR: Km - (U.S.A.)

CCR ENGINES DOES NOT SELL TRUELY REMANUFACTURED ENGINES. THEY RE-USE THE CAM, LIFTERS,AND FOLLOWERS (ROCKERS).

NO OTHER ENGINE IS REBUILT THIS WAY. ANY ENGINE BUILDER KNOWS VALVE TRAIN PARTS ARE ONLY SURFACE HARDENED AND ONCE YOU WEAR PAST THAT MICROSCOPIC LAYER THE BASE METAL OF THE PART WEARS DOWN MUCH FASTER.

BECAUSE OF THIS I COULD NOT SELL OR REPRESENT THIS AS A REBUILT ENGINE. I HAD TO SELL IT AS RE-RINGED/RE-GASKETED AT A GREATLY REDUCED PRICE ($900).

IF THEY WANT TO BE HONEST ABOUT THEIR ADS THEY NEED TO LIST IT AS RE-RINGED NOT REBUILT.

THIS NOT ONLY RESULTS IN A ENGINE THAT WILL NOT LAST AS LONG AS THE ORIGINAL.

FYI--AT THE TIME I GOT THIS ONE, SUBARU DEALERS WERE OFFERING THIS ENGINE BRAND NEW FOR $3,000. IF CCR WERE HONEST I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT THE NEW ENGINE.

#5 REBUTTAL Owner of company

Never requested warranty work

AUTHOR: Emily Johnston - (United States of America)

We have been remanufacturing Subaru engines for 16 years, and ship both nationwide and internationally.

The specific engine the customer purchased has not been made by Subaru since 1993.  Getting new lifters, cams and rockers is nearly impossible and prohibitively expensive.  However, we measure and recondition each item meticulously.

1) The customer never asked us to warranty the engine in any way.

2) Every company (and there are very few) that remanufactures this engine re-uses both the cams and rockers.  Some buy reconditioned aftermarket lifters.  We recondition them ourselves.  We refuse to use aftermarket parts on our engines.

3) Other than an email from the company to which the customer went to have a repair done by, we have NOT received any communication from the customer.  If we had, we would have addressed it immediately.

4) While we welcome feedback and attempt to resolve any customer complaint immediately, we can not respond if the customer does not contact us directly, which in this case, they did not, contrary to their claim on this website.

5) The car sat for several months while the customer was out of town, causing the lifters to bleed down.  Of course, they made noise!
