While downloading an episode of Seinfelt on Macbook , received a message that my Java needed to be updated .When I tried to update Java , received a warning that i had a serious security threat on my computer and to phone a 1 800 number for help. As it was an 1 800 number I assumed it was legitimate.

When I phoned the number, a lady with a foreign accent told me that indeed i had a serious threat on my computer and that it needed to be fixed immeadiately. I asked if this was an official Apple support site she said it was and that she could help.I asked about bringing my computer to an Apple store but she told me that the it would take 7 -10 days and $199.00 to fix as the people in the store were not qualified to do the repair as it would take a level 9 technician to do the repair. I enquired about a repair centre nearer to me and was given an address nearer to  me , (which I later found out doesn't exist) but it would take longer and cost more.

Foolishly I gave her permission to get into my computer and she  demonstrted  what she said was embedded malware that  was a serious threat and could access all parts of my computer. She then informed me that she could refer me to  Level 9 technician who would be able to fix the problem , it would take 20- 30 minutes and would cost 199.99. I agreed and was hand ed over to the level 9 technician who explained and showed their business site with an address in Nevada and a seal of approval from Henderson city council. The repair was authorized by me and I was able to see my files being corrected and then was shown that pop ups would be removed and all adds would be taken care of by Adare removal and that I had CCleaner installed and that I was covered for a year and had lifetime benefit of some other app and that my firewall was now turned on.

I was then returned to the initial agent with lots of background talk, most likely Indian and completed the process.

This transaction was fraudulent because they represented themselves as being official Apple support , gave misleading information about alternative solutions.

My mistakes were motivated by

1. Ignorance --( I am not computer savvy and wouldn't recognise Malware if it hit me

2 .Fear- I do my banking online and am always afraid of anyone having access to my account

3. Urgency-  this site stressed how vulneable I was if I didn't act immeadiately.
