On October 15, 2016, I dropped off my 2010 Honda Civic, which was subject to an airbag recall, at Coral Springs Auto Mall. As part of its “courtesy service,” Coral Springs Auto Mall advised that it would conduct a safety inspection. Unknown to Coral Springs Auto Mall, my car had receive its routine inspection less than two weeks prior. Subsequent to safety inspection by Coral Springs Auto Mall, I was informed that there were two unsafe conditions:

  1. Rear Shoes/Adjust Drums (3mm unsafe) price to repair was $275.51
  2. Drive belt (every 60,000 expanding ) price to repair was $232.75

Coral Springs Auto Mall played on my feelings of being unsafe that stemmed from the airbag recall and represented that the conditions above represented a further threat to both myself and any passengers driving in my car. I was advised that if I completed both services with then I would receive a 15% discount. As I was unavailable when Coral Springs Auto Mall called to advise of the “unsafe conditions” and returned too late for the work to be completed, I was told that I had to return another day to get this work completed.

After dealing with the initial panic that these conditions represented an increased safety risk, I decided to receive a second opinion as my prior experience with Coral Springs Auto Mall was that there was always something that needed servicing on my car whenever they had occasion to inspection. I took my car to two repair shops, including the repair shop that had completed the prior inspection. Both repair shops looked at my car and indicated that the repairs were not needed. One repair shop indicated that the drive belt, in particular, was almost brand new. Neither repair shops were surprised when I advised that the repairs were recommended by Coral Springs Auto Mall as they had seen other customers being similarly deceived by Coral Springs Auto Mall.

For Coral Springs Auto Mall to take advantage of my fear that my vehicle, which is already subject to an airbag recall, is unsafe is both deceptive and exploitative. Further capitalizing on the feelings of fear, Coral Springs Auto Mall created the impression that I was getting a deal if I authorized them to complete what were essentially unnecessary services.
