2003 Ford windstar that has transmission problems. In Mar of 2010 had my vehicle towed to Cottman transmission(holland rd) Virginia beach because it wasn't shifting into drive or reverse.I was told that they would get to it later that day and the manager took my keys. A couple of days later The manager told me there was water in the transmission and they were trying to find the source of the water.I found this strange because i just had the trans drained and filled by a local shop 3 months prior and they found no water at all, even showed me the fluid. They recommended not doing a flush since i was already having problems and this might make it worse. How ironic that cottmans finds water.I went to the cottmans the next day and the manager asked me who my insurance company was. i said gieco and he said that he did business with them often and that they often pay for claims involving water because the water isn't coming from any components on the car.We had some aera flooding a few months ago but i didn't recall driving in any water significantly high but it was worth a try. I saw my vehicle on the lift taken apart and the manager showed my some transmission parts damaged by water but i didn't kn ow if they were mine, i'm no mechanic.
The adjuster called me from the shop, said he will call me back once he's done with his investigation. He called me back within the hour saying that he can't find any eveidence that water came from something in the car, therefore they would pay the claim. a week later I Picked up my car was given an invoice and told that there was a 1 year warranty. I thought 1 year was short given the $2000,00 bill they gave Gieco. The invoice reads (remove, check & install $350,cottman premium service $496.38,9 rebuild labor $855, 1 torque converter $300.00. I asked for a breakdown of all parts replaced and the manager said that they didn't do that, just the parts listed on the invoice. The manager said i could pay for extended coverage, i declined. 8 mths later i'm back because van having trouble going into reverse. cottmans said they will get to it in about 3-4 days. Week later they say theres water in tranmission again and thats not covered under warranty. They don't know where water is coming from and they called the insurance company(uknowingly to me)and they won't get involved. I called gieco to see if they will get involved and they refer me back to the adjuster who made the claim. I called him, his supervisor and the next ranking supervisor and they all say the same thing, they paid the claim and they can't get involved. The manager at cottmans recommended i take my car somewhere else and get tranx flushed because they don't do that there. Gave me my keys, no invoice, no written recommendation to get tranx flushed. I called corporate office, they contacted local shop and local shop said that getting a transmission flush will not do any good now, but they would work with me on repair, but first it needs to be determined where water is coming from and this will not be a no cost repair.I thought contacting corporate would get results but not so. Now, this all seems very familiar to me. They didn't do it right the first time and they wan't payment to find the source of the water and make the repair again, and they are willing to "work with me".Now i'm not saying that they put water in my transmission, even though theey had 9 days with my vehicle just to give it back saying theres nothing they can do,but what i am saying is that with the manager, the owner, and the techs combined decades of experience, someone should know be able to figure out where water is coming from but they say even with there tests they have no clue.
I thought that because this was a nationally recognized company, that i would be spared the unethical business practices, but i was wrong i don't plan on giving them another dime to do resolve a problem that they should have already. My next move may be to contact news channel that reports local businesses that have shady business practices and see where it goes from there.
