Recently, March, I ate at Cracker Barrel and got very sick
immediately following. I was sick for about a week then with lingering pains. I just figured it was too heavy for me, however recently a previous manager of Cracker Barrel stated that they use Pig's fat in their bicuits, I have not eaten any pig products in almost 13 years and I am very upset if this is true that I was tricked into eating pig. I have done some more research and found a previous employee which confirmed this.

The Real Deal

Here's the deal:
Cracker Barrel makes both biscuits and cornbread. The biscuits are made with the usual stuff biscuits are made of: flour, buttermilk, shortening, etc. There are no animal products in the biscuits! However, the cornbread does contain animal products. The cornbread contains bacon grease for flavoring, just like grandma used to make.
Cracker Barrel DOES state on their menu which items use meat seasonings that most vegetarians want to steer clear of. It is printed on The Breakfast Menu in small print under the heading "Tasty Alternatives" and it is printed in the Lunch/Dinner Menu in the very middle of the trifold at the bottom under the heading "Country Dinner Plates".
As a matter of fact, this is EXACTLY what is stated since I happen to have a menu right in front of me: "We want you to know that some of our offerings, like Turnip Greens, Green Beans, Corn Muffins, Hashbrown Casserole and Pinto Beans, are made the old-fashioned way using meat seasonings and are not strictly vegetarian. Please ask your server about any particular dish if you have any questions."
I have worked at Cracker Barrel for 4 years as a server, hostess, prep cook, cashier, and trainer. I don't know it all, but I do know a lot about Cracker Barrel Policy and Procedure. I hope this helps clear up any misconceptions.

No one was insulting you..

You made the claim that you were tricked into eating pig fat. You made the claim that you were sick because of the pig fat in the biscuits. Were either of these claims true? Like one poster said, if you were so senstive to the issue you would had either not eaten at this resturant or you would have asked how the biscuits were prepared.
One should never expect the readers to be on your side when you post. You said that you wanted to warn readers...HUH?! Most who have a specific eating style as you do, would avoid COUNTRY COOKING resturants like Cracker Barrel in the first place.

ENOUGH OF THE INSULTS
AUTHOR: Samantha - (U.S.A.)

Look I was told this by two employees in separate states that they put pig's fat in their biscuits. I only posted this to inform other people that don't eat pigs. Of course I don't think people were plotting back there. I never would have put this up if I thought so many people would sit back and enjoy putting me down for it. If I could I would remove this report however it is out of my hands now. Please enough with the insults if you have something to say about if this is true or not then wonderful but if you just want to post things to put me down it is really not neccessary.

How were you tricked?

Samantha, how were you tricked into eating what you have thought up to be biscuits made with pig fat? First, it is YOUR responsibility to look into how things are made if you are eating differently than most.
Second, do you really think so much of yourself that those at this resturant would plot to trick you? Yeah, they were in the kitchen plotting on how to get you to eat buscuits made with pig fat.
I bet they thought it would be a hoot to watch you eat them. I can hear them in the back snickering looking around the corner. Third, I have NEVER heard of buscuits being made with pig fat. Pie crusts, yes, something that needs to rise to bake? No!

vice president assured me they do not use Pig's fat

I was assured they do not use Pig's fat in their biscuits. I don't know how two people that have never met from two different states over 1000 miles apart could state that they do use pig's fat and that they have seen it could be wrong but this is the email they sent me.
-------origional email-------
"I spoke with the Vice President of Product Development about the ingredients and he assured me that we use only 100% vegetable shortening in the biscuits. All of our stores use the same ingredients and recipes for all of our menu items. If you would have the employees get in touch with Mark Tanzer, our VP of Product Development - he could re-assure them of our ingredients.
Thank You,

Cracker Barrel is known to be a home-style restaurant

I'm sorry, but Cracker Barrel is well known to be a home-style restaurant, the kind of food your grandmother used to cook. What WASN'T cooked in bacon grease in our grandparents generation? Does Cracker Barrel even have any vegetarian dishes, or did you just eat biscuits and a salad? I assume you are used to those "trendy" restaurants where the staff always dresses in black clothing, otherwise you would not be so outraged at a little animal fat in your food. If you go to a restaurant and the only thing that meets your diet is salad and bread, you can reasonably assume that they are not catering to vegetarians. I wouldn't eat at Cracker Barrel if the food was cooked with vegetable oil instead of "animal fat". It would no longer taste the way it is supposed to, and if you looked around while you were in there you would see lots of elderly people. They would not even consider using vegetable oil when cooking themselves, and have big coffee cans full of bacon grease just waiting to be used for cooking.

Reasonable Assumption that pig's fat would not be used
AUTHOR: Samantha - (U.S.A.)

I think it is a reasonable assumption that pig's fat would not be used to cook biscuits. All I ask is that they put it on the menu or at least inform you that they contain pigs fat. There are a lot of reasons not to eat pig, I think that there is a reasonable assumption that they would not contain pigs fat.

Did you ask if the biscuits were cooked in vegetable or animal fat?
AUTHOR: J - (U.S.A.)

If the waiter LIED than it would be their fault when you asked. If you want to avoid eating meat products it would be good to go to a vegetarian restaurant. Do you feel healthier by eating only fruits and vegetables? What do you subsititute meat for protein? Hope you have a better dining experience in the future.
