I planned a birthday party for my boyfriend at Dave and Busters thinking that it would be a lot of fun. In order to get a space I had to sign a contract, put down a deposit, and pay an hourly rate. The contract stated that we would have "open bar" once we were there.

Once we got there it was a completely different story. Not only were they not prepared at all, but the service was terrible. We did not have a server for twenty minutes and our appetizers were served immediately after dinner was. There was also no open bar. We were charged full price for every drink we ordered. When me and my guests questioned the contract, we were completely dismissed by the rude manager, Don Gillin.

He spoke down to us as if we were children and charged us double the price for the space. Not once did he apologize and treated us like criminals by bringing a security guard to stand by his side. After being forced to pay the bill in full, we were stopped at the door and completely insulted when told that we could not leave until it was confirmed that we had payed.

Nobody should be treated that way by any business unless you are really a criminal. The management and staff there could not have been any more rude or incompetent. I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody.

question

AUTHOR: star11802 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, March 24, 2012

I am having a bday party for my husband here and am doing an open bar.  The contract is somewhat confusing.  I was wondering did they have you pay the $20 per hour per guest plus the cost of the drinks?  I can understand being upset if that was the case.  In the contract it states $x per person total based on consumption. So if they did that it would be over $1000 dollars plus the cost of drinks?  I wouldnt think they would do it that way, but from what im reading on your report thats what they did?

Simply put.

-You did not understand your contract.
-Having a security guard there when confronting/addressing a large group of people seems sensible, or when confronting/addressing rowdy individual(s)
-You were stopped at the door because "walkouts" are pretty common.

Open bar simply means that the host covers the entire tab rather than having each individual pay for their drinks. Open bar does not mean that the bar covers the entire tab, or in other words all the drinks are free. I have not seen any bars where I live locally (including at D&B's) where they have "all you can drink" specials.

I can only imagine how agitated you and your guests may have been. I wouldnt put it beyond D&B yo have a company policy, whether official or unofficial where security oversees interactions between large groups of people and employees.

Some businesses penalize the server if there is a walkout. Many times the server has to pay in full. If you were the server that day im sure you wouldnt want someone walking out on a $300/$400 bill would you?

Definition of an open bar

AUTHOR: Btjwmalibu - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, August 04, 2008

The definition of an open bar is that the host of a party or gathering will cover the entire bill for alcohol for the guest attending. That means that you have to pay for everything that you and your guests drink! Maybe you were naive in thinking you could just order whatever drinks you wanted, but if you have ever gone to a bar and walked out without a check for what you had I would like to go there! And the contracts you signed should have stated if you had an open bar or a cash bar. A cash bar is when everyone has a personal tab or they just pay as they go. Maybe you shouldn't blame this on your age or the establishment and just admit that you don't know any better!
