My 2000 Echo was struck by lightening. My check engine and alternator lights were on, so I took it to David Maus Toyota for servicing. I was told there was a $100 diagnostic fee. Later that day, I was called and told that an oil sensor was bad and would cost $400. Still later I was told that I needed to pay $1100 in advance because the brain had been scrambled and it would take up to 2 weeks to recieve. The car was not safe to drive.
I decided to test drive vehicles and know how much to ask the bank to finance. I went back to David Maus the next day and test drove 2 cars. I decided on one and the salesman told me I could drive it home if he started paperwork on it. He said they would just tear it up when the financing from the bank came through. When I asked what would happen if I didn't get the loan, he said "They're real good about that here", my paperwork would be shredded.

I asked him not to, but he used my husband's bad credit report as well as mine. We were there for hours being told we were next in line to see the financial rep. In the mean time, I was told I had to pay for the repairs on my car which came to about $400. I also recieved a call from a friend who told me that I could get a used brain on line for $180. We were about to leave when we were told we could see the financial rep.

They tried to bully us into a deal where we paid 16.9% interest. We turned down one version after another. I repeatedly asked for a copy of these deals, but they were always held onto by the rep and I wasn't even allowed to get a close look at them. We finally walked out without a car. The salesman left me a voicemail that night that he had transferred all of my belongings to the new vehicle.

I called David Maus Toyota the next morning to tell them I was picking up my car. I had ordered my used brain on line. I was told that they had no record of my car being there. I was transferred several times, but always the same story. My insurance company called, saying they wanted to inspect my car, but I had to tell them it could not be found and that I didn't even have the estimate I had asked for several times.

I finally recieved a call from the manager who said he had walked through the entire service area and my car wasn't there. I decided to go there myself. When I got there, a service rep easily found my car on the computer. He and a tech got together and kept talking to each other and looking at us and then walked into the service area. The rep returned and told me I couldn't take the car because it wouldn't start. I called AAA and had it towed to my house. My husband soon discovered the computer was unplugged. When plugged back in, it started right up and ran fine.

My birthday is this month, and my husband went to get the registration renewed. He was told that my title was being transferred and he couldn't renew it. I called the dealership several times and kept getting put to voicemail. After a week of this and my birthday coming up, I filed a complaint with the State's Attorney General's office. This actually got their attention. I was offered a low interest rate and a trade in of $1200 on my car if I would drop the suit.

Instead, I would like to suggest that everyone who has had a bad experience at David Maus Toyota file a complaint with the State's Attorney General. This type of manipulation and outright fraud will never stop unless we all stand up to it and make our voices heard.
