A young boy and girl knocked on the door (in a gated community)- each about very early 20's. They talked incredibly fast about being on a youth team to win a competition for a trip to Italy and asked if I would like to help- by purchasing children's books which would be sent to poor kids, and the sales team would receive points. They mentioned that the sale could be fully cancelled and refunded once the order was put in, about three hours later.

They at first said cash or check was OK, and later said that check was not OK because xxx stupid reasons xxx. I Gave them benefit of the doubt since they were so young despite warning flags popping up left and right. I then signed a bunch of receipts that were not even properly filled in. Was sweet talked into driving them to ATM for sizable amount of cash- WAY too much for the type of thing they were 'selling'. These types of scammers would work great on the naive and pushover type (like me).

The kids were very friendly- overly friendly- and I even let them sit in my living room and use my bathroom. I am now very worried about a future burglary since they had a good chance to case my home.

I did talk them into giving me their phone number as well as their supervisors phone number. I called them a little while after they left when the immediate feeling of "I just got scammed" sank in. Argued for a good while but they eventually hung up. The police said nothing can be done because it was cash. I contacted the website for a refund and actually received a response- just to follow cancellation directions on the receipts. So I mailed in all the appropriate receipt copies etc but nothing ever happened, as I'd expected.

Pretty much nothing else can be done except to spread the word. I've read on some other forums that these kids might not even know they're scamming, or that they are put in pretty bad conditions as well. Whatever it is, I'm more mad at myself for being so naive, gullible, and trusting than these scammers for having no morals.

So I know most people dont fall for these types of ridiculous door to door scams any more, but if you're weak like me, please just learn how to say a firm no, close the door, then feel bad for a little while at being rude, and then feel happy for not being scammed.

OTHER HALF OF AMOUNT FINALLY REFUNDED

AUTHOR: anonymous - ()

POSTED: Friday, December 26, 2014

After my last update where I only received half the amount refunded in check form after sending a threatening letter and all receipts to the P.O box in Arizona, I sent them another notice through their website contact. I told them that I'm still expecting the other half, that there must be have been a mistake when they sent out the first check, and when will I receive the other half? They responded in less than a week, saying that they'll forward my request to the company. On 12/23/2014, I received the other half of the money by check in the mail, much to my surprise!

So in conclusion, I suppose this company might be legit, but from other reports and my own experience, it seems there needs to be some wrangling done before you can get your refund. However, just to be safe, its best not to buy from door to door salesman at all. Only buy the things that you actively seek and need! Good luck to you all, and I hope your situation works out as well as mine did.

HALF OF THE MONEY RETURNED

AUTHOR: anonymous - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, December 10, 2014

To scamenomore (first commentor of original post):

Thanks very much for your advice and input, I greatly appreciate it.

I'd like to add to my post that I did send in the request for refund within the three day period. Yesterday, I received a check for HALF the amount that I paid in cash. I'll continue to fight for the other half, but in this case, maybe the two kids were the scammers and not necessarily the company itself. They asked for double the amount of what they originally calculated. They had me 'calculate it myself' on their phone, and when I got the final amount, they told me to double that, and thats the amount due. The reasoning was because I agreed to purchase 'one of each for both the boys and girls'. Well.. anyway main point: follow the above commentor's directions.

send copies of the receipts with a letter (mine was threatening reports with bbb, told them I already filed report with police, and lawyer involvement etc.) within three days to the p.o box listed on the receipt. Good luck to all.

one more note: dont let ever let salespeople come into your home/use your bathroom/sit/etc. There hasn't been an incident but I've been paranoid since the scam. They looked around, asked me about my work, etc. I believe if they didnt note that I had two dogs with me and that I had a boyfriend (they seemed surprised and asked me again to confirm when I made a passing comment about him) then I would have much more reason to be worried.

How to get your money back

This same thing happened to me.  Write a certified letter with return receipt (signature required) to them within 3 days and demand your refund.  Tell them that failure to refund will result in a Better Business Bureau complaint and FTC complaint.  Document everything!
