So here's a business I recommend no one ever visits here in Scottsdale.

I got a call last night telling me that I had won a weeks paid vacation and a iPad for a draw I had entered the week before. We talked, and the customer service rep proceeds to tell me that I wasn't eligible because I wasn't 25 yet (I'm 23), but if I brought a significant other with me that was,  it would be ok.  He also mentioned that is there was any complication I would still get a $100 gift card to the store.

So I rearrange my day, have my S.O take time from work, and I drive an hour out of my way to get to the store, just so the manager there can keep me waiting for half an hour to tell me in a VERY un-sypathetic manner that there was a mistake and that I wasn't eligible for anything, not even the gift card, since I (the winner) was not 25. Then he walked off without making an effort to propose any kind of solution.  I then asked the receptionist if there was any way I could give my winnings to be friend that is 25 and he just looked at me like I was an idiot, smirked and said no.

Thanks #DirectBuy for that astonishing customer service!

guidelines were not listed

Actually when I signed up, I simply added my name and number on a Ipad screen and signed at the bottom.  There were no general guidelines for the draw.  In fact the girl that was taking the signatures should have asked about that before taking my contact information.

I understand that there are rules, and that managers have to abide by them.  Nevertheless, if I was told over the phone that as long as I brought a significant other with me that was over the age of 25 that I would still be eligible for the trip, then that should have been the case when I came in!  It was honestly embarrassing for me.  Also, I was also told over the phone that I would be offered a $100 gift card for my time if there was any complication, regarless of my age.  Not even that was given to me.

When I worked in travel/hospitality and similar instances occurred, we always made sure that the customer or potential customer at least recieved some sort of compensation for the inconvenience and mistake on our part.  I think he should have honored that I was promised a gift card and offered that to me.

Those contests have rules

AUTHOR: FloridaNative - ()

I don't work for Direct Buy, but I am familiar with those type of contests. If you take a moment to read the entry form on any of those contests, they have a list of rules and guidelines. Before you enter you are suppose to read the rules to see if you qualify for entry. Your signature on the entry form attests that you read the rules and that you meet the minimum qualifications.

Apparently you didn't read the form before you submitted your entry. Or maybe you did and thought the guidelines didn't apply to you.

I don't know if the manager was rude to you or if it is just your perception because you drove an hour to get to the store. You can use this experience to save you lots of time and money and effort in the future by reading the guidelines (rules) of any future endeavor.

The manager can't just change the contest guidelines because you want them changed to meet your circumstances. Thank goodness for that - because that would be a fraudulent act by the manager. The manager may have been astonished that you even asked him to change the rules in the contest and didn't quite know how to handle your reqest.

If it makes you feel better, these contests are used to generate customers for the business holding the contest. This particular business is extremely expensive to join so you saved yourself a boatload of money :)
