A 91-year old woman in Fort Collins, CO (my mother) had Direct TV installed and after the first snow storm the picture was lost. She called and they said she needed to go out and brush off the satellite dish.

She said she was 91 and used a cane and could not go out in the snow. They told her to find someone else to do it. She said she lived alone and this would not work for her so please cancel her contract. No where in the contract does it mention that snow could affect reception and that clearing snow is a possible maintenance task with satellite dishes.

They would not let her out of her contract and stuck her for $240.00.

She is mad as *** and fighting this pathetic excuse for a business.

Direct TV holds 91 year old woman to contract.  What is the minimum and maximum age that a contract should be upheld?

That would create chaos in the business world..  The contracts do make mention of weather causing reception problems.

Does your mother NOT have a  phone to ask someone or a neighbor for help?  How about her calling  YOU.  Have YOU really read the contract yourself?

This is a common bad weather occurence with satellite TV, no matter who the provider is. BTW, a heavy rain to the south of the dish will also, sometimes cause a temporary disruption of signal.  It's inherent in the way the signal is received.

No, I don't work for or subscribe to DirectTV, I DO use Dish TV however and just brushed the snow off my dish today. A broom works very nicely and I didn't even have a fit and fall in it.

The contract also includes a clause that obligates the signer to two years of service with a pro-rated penalty if it's cancelled prior to the two year obligation.  It says nothing about being able to cancel if you get the occasional snow storm and lose signal temporarily.
