I had been a subscriber to DirecTV for 4 years. When it came time to renew my contract last year, I did so. Then the problems ensued...

First, I have a 3D TV and the thing that sold me the most on Direct TV was that they had 4 3D stations. Within weeks of resigning, they discontinued use of 2 of those 3D stations, which left only 2 -- and one of those was a Pay-Per-View station (doesn't count; not part of my regular subscription package).

THEN, they stopped broadcasting the Weather Channel. (Really???) They substituted an very inferior weather channel, explaining that the Weather Channel had too many non-weather related programs and they felt this was a better choice. (Nice that they determine what I want to watch!)

THEN, I had some problems with syncing audio with video. They sent a repairman out, who replaced my dish and made some adjustments. That didn't work. And, they wanted to charge me for this service call, which I refused to agree to (after all, it IS their equipment; they should maintain it). The following day, they automatically enrolled me in a service contract (at additional cost) without my authorization. I immediately called them and cancelled that. Still had problems with the audio not syncing with the video -- right up until the day I finally cancelled their service.

Oh, but there is more: They advertise that you can schedule programs online to record on your home DVR. I tried that several times over a two-month time frame and each time, the programs failed to record. When I called to complain, their response was "We know it isn't working and we're trying to fix it." Really? Well, then don't make it available if you know it doesn't work!!!! And don't advertise that as a feature.

At that point, I decided I had had enough of their crappy service and cancelled my service. They sent me a box with return postage on it to return their equipment, which I did. They also told me I would be charged $270 for cancelling my contract. I enumerated all of the problems and concerns I had encountered (see above) and that I considered all of those "breach of contract" and I would not pay an early-termination fee. Furthermore, I told them that they no longer have authorization to use my credit card on file, which they took argument to.

The following day, I received an email saying my service had been cancelled. Yesterday, I received my charge card bill with a $270 charge from them, even after I told them -- and wrote in an email to them -- that they could not do that. They used my charge card illegally, without my permission!

I think this company excels in bad business practices and I would like to go on record as such. Never, never, never again would I consider using their services. And you shouldn't, either.

You are wrong on many counts here...

First, there is NO provision in your two year contract, with the pro-rated early termination fee to cancel and avoid paying this.

Second, YOU agreed they could use whatever payment method they had on file to collect monies owed them.

They also have the right to change their programming at times.  The weather channel, was in part, dropped due to a fee dispute with the channel.  The cable and satellite providers really are trying to keep costs from rising so much.  It's people like you who don't understand this.

"They used my charge card illegally, without my permission!"

So, since you claim they "used your charge card illegally" sue them in small claims court.  Let us know how that works out for you...what could possibly go wrong?

Again, the contract YOU signed allowed ALL of the actions they've taken. Your convoluted reasoning aside, it's ALL legal.

Nope, I don't work for them or even use their service.

Permission...

You gave them express permission when you signed your contract 4 years ago. Im not surprised you do not realize this. I know for a simple fact that YOU DID NOT READ WHAT YOU WERE SIGNING!!!! It clearly states on page 2 of their contract that ANY REMAINING BALANCE OWED WILL BE TAKEN FROM THE CARD ON FILE. YOU did not read the contract.

Secondly, YOU are not a judge, you CANNOT claim "breach of contract" without having a legal entity back you up. Even if they are having issues, they ARE working on them. So its NOT a breach of contract on their part. BECAUSE THEY WERE ADDRESSING THE ISSUE.

It saddens me to say this but you act just like EVERY OTHER SHEEP OUT THERE. MEHHHHH!! MEHHHH!! They are holding me to the terms of the contract BOOOOOOOOO!! Maybe next time you will read what you are signing. YOU have not been ripped off by them. YOU screwed YOURSELF. YOU cancelled the contract, not them. YOU agreed to the terms and conditions AND signed your name indicating that you agreed. YOU did not read the contract. You boned you. YOU just dont want to accept reponsibility for your own actions and think that complaining on RoR is going to get you some form of "justice". Well it wont, because you would have to punish YOURSELF.
