Noted area plastic surgeon gets 10 days in jail

Dr. Scott Loessin's jet-set world -- a yacht, luxury cars, million-dollar home -- fueled by a successful plastic surgery practice came crashing down Tuesday when a judge found him guilty of violating a court order and sentenced him to 10 days in the not-so-deluxe confines of the Volusia County Branch Jail.

Loessin, 45, the chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Halifax Health, had been court-ordered twice to stay at least 500 feet away from his wife, Mary Kathryn Loessin, 44, and the lavish home they shared in Ormond Beach's Broadwater development. But on Feb. 27, the Daytona Beach Shores resident violated the injunction for protection against domestic violence when he came to the couple's former home with a flatbed truck to retrieve his Porsche.

"He hardly needed another auto," said Christopher Wickersham, an attorney representing the wife after the sentencing, browsing through a list of automobiles Loessin owns.

The list included a Rolls Royce Phantom, a Dodge Viper, a Ferrari, two Mercedes Benzes, a Lexus GX, a Lamborghini Murcielago, and a Dodge Grand Caravan -- which, together with the Porsche, are valued at approximately $1.1 million. A peek into the couple's divorce file -- six volumes with several hundred pages each -- is a window into the lives of the rich and locally famous. They contain allegations of drug use and accusations that Dr. Scott Loessin was spending extravagantly to draw down marital assets he might have to pay in the divorce in addition to looking into having his wife killed. Indeed, the stakes are high.

The couple's Ormond Beach home in the Broadwater development, valued at $2.3 million, was in 2004 the seventh-most expensive waterfront home in Volusia County and, in 2005, the setting for swanky American Cancer Society benefit. Last month, however, the bank filed to foreclose on the 5,887-square-foot home.

A 101-foot yacht, named for the couple's daughter, is valued at $3.5 million. The "Gabriella" rents for $35,000 a week.

The captain of that boat, Bob Murphy, reported to police that Scott Loessin had showed an interest in hiring someone to kill his wife, according to the couple's divorce file.

The case was dropped for lack of evidence, Ormond Beach Police Sgt. Kenny Hayes said Monday. According to the report, an investigator posed as the boat captain in "controlled" phone calls to Scott Loessin, who then went to police concerned the phone calls were a set-up by his wife.

Scott Loessin's attorney, Steve Guardiano, argued that his client did not know an injunction existed because he believed that a June 2006 injunction was modified or merged into the couple's divorce agreement. Guardiano said Scott Loessin got bad advice from two attorneys and he had "no willful intent" to violate the court order.

But Wickersham said a Feb. 4 divorce agreement declared that both parties should not have contact with each other and specifically prohibited Scott Loessin to come within 500 feet of his wife.

Scott Loessin, who practices in Daytona Beach, testified he asked Ormond Beach police to accompany him to the house, but the officer testified that Scott Loessin was already on the property when he got there.

"He had a flatbed in the driveway and the gate was open," the officer testified. "He was on the property and in front of the property."

Once Scott Loessin was found guilty of disobeying the judge's order, Guardiano argued that a jail sentence would inconvenience his client because it would keep him away from his practice and from on-call availability for trauma cases at Halifax Health Medical Center. Guardiano argued that a fine would be appropriate. "Do you believe this court is able to determine a fine that will get your client's attention?" Circuit Judge John V. Doyle asked Guardiano before pronouncing the sentence. "He admits to making $1.5 million a year and his wife says he makes $2 million."

Whether Scott Loessin's ability to practice medicine will be affected by this sentencing is not clear. A review of a doctor's privileges to admit to Halifax Health's hospitals is done if a committee of peers determines the conviction indicates the doctor's ability to care for patients has been compromised, Halifax Health spokesman John Gonda said.

A doctor in Monroe County also filed an injunction for protection against Scott Loessin. Court records show Dr. Robert Berg of Key Largo, the ex-husband of Scott Loessin's new girlfriend, filed the injunction for protection against repeat violence.

A recent patient of Dr. Scott Leossin

AUTHOR: A to D - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, September 29, 2012

When you google Dr. Scott Leosin this website is one of the first to pop up. So when I read this I was a little concerned. I know for a fact that his personal life is not affecting his professionalism or his surgical abilities. I had breast augmentation done in September 2012 with Dr. Leossin and I am very pleased. I googled all the doctors that I did consults with and they all had comments both good and bad. I choose Dr. Leossin because of his qualification and his 20 years of experience. Dr. Leossin and his staff went out of there way to make me and my husband feel comfortable with our decision to have the surgery done. I am a big baby when it comes to pain/surgery, especially since it was for cosmetic purposes and not a necessity. I have had no problems, matter of fact, I had absolutely no pain after my surgery. I went from an A cup to a D cup (425 cc), I was given pain meds and muscle relaxers after the procedure but I only took one muscle relaxer because my chest felt a little tight that night.

I had surgery done on a Thursday and I went back to work on Monday. I was up and about the next day, even went to dinner with some friends on Saturday night. My husband and I are very happy with my results. In the future if I have to do this again I will definitely go back to Dr. Leossin. Please do not allow the Internet affect your decision to see Dr. Leossin and his staff!

Sensationalism vs Fact

AUTHOR: Scott Loessin, M.D. - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 07, 2011

Typically when people go through a rough patch such as a divorce or legal separation, it remains a private and personal matter. But when you are someone such as myself who holds a valued position within the community, it becomes "news" and open to speculation and public gossip. Just like most gossip, there is usually a part with some amount of truth, and then there are parts that are totally fabricated just to make the story sensational and newsworthy. While going through this tough time in my life, there were those who took sides and those who were extremely supportive. Unfortunately, my life and my marriage were scrutinized unfairly.

The facts are as follows:
No, I was never arrested for any type of violence towards anyone.
No, I have never plotted to harm my former wife. We share a child, and at one point in time shared a pleasant life together. I wish her the best.
Yes, I was divorced in 2008, sadly, as well as half of Americans today.
Yes, I maintained custody of my lovely young daughter, who loves and respects me as a parent, and now whom I am proudly putting through college.
Yes, I take my practice very seriously, and the best quality care of my patients will always be my priority.

I would sincerely like to thank all of those, ( and there were many friends and patients ) who have given me support; your kind and thoughtful encouragement during those difficult times was greatly appreciated.

I enjoy and I am dedicated to my work, but I make no apologies for my personal matters. I plan to continue upholding the highest standard of care for my patients as I have always done in the past.

A great surgeon!

AUTHOR: Jennifer Wells - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 30, 2011

First of all, I don't understand how this is a rip off report? I mean, who got ripped off? What shady business practice took place? Second, most of what is alledged in this report was never proven or even prosecuted. Third, Dr. Loessin was never arrested for any violence toward his ex wife or anyone else.

I've wanted to respond to this for some time now, but finally decided to when I had another surgical proceedure done by Dr. Loessin recently. I have had 4 over the past 7 years, as well as a few non invasive ones. I have always respected and trusted this doctor with my health and wellness. If I believed for one moment that he had violent tendencies, I wouldn't have continued being treated by him, nor would I have referred friends and family.

The headline is sensational, but is it the truth? Speaking of which, isn't the body supposed to support the headline? Nowhere does the writer substantiate, give credence or sources to any of it. Was the writer a patient of Dr. Loessin's? An employee? An angry ex, or just someone with an ax to grind? I've read this a few times, thinking that I maybe missed something. Nor does the writer include that Mrs. Loessin was ALSO court ordered to stay 500 ft from her husband, Dr. Loessin. The botched breast job accusation is far reaching, and frankly, one person's words on a page. Where's the proof or even a reference or source for that matter? I know a lot of people who speak very highly of Dr. Loessin's skill as a surgeon. His personal life has nothing to do with that skill.

If anyone reading this has been through a divorce, you know that it's never easy, especially when there are property and children involved. It can try the best and most honorable of us . I was Dr. Loessin's patient when he was going through that very trying time in his life, and I never once witnessed him deviate from being a professional, talented, and compassionate surgeon. Not once. Neither has anyone I've referred to him. Everyone spoke highly of this physician back then and still do to this day.

As I've said before, I've known Dr. Loessin for 7 years as a patient, during which, I became a friend. He has worked very hard for many years to obtain experience as well as the respect and trust of his patients. If he wants to collect cars, that's his business and his right. He has dedicated his time and care to his profession, so why is it shocking that the material posessions he accumulated be important to him?. "Dr. Loessin hardly needed another auto"??? If he worked hard to earn that vehicle, why would he simply give it away or allow it to sit somewhere unused?

As far as the alegation that Dr. Loession wanted to harm his ex wife, again, there is no proof of that. "The case was dropped for lack of evidence". Anger issues towards women? Losing it? The poster must be speaking of an entirely different man, because I know this not to be true at all. Dr. Loessin is a great surgeon; one of the best out there. I will continue to trust him with my plastic surgery needs and I will continue to refer my friends and family to him.

AUTHOR: Alkoso - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, September 08, 2008

I am a Client Of Dr. Loessin and although he did not have a right to do what he did to his wife, this has no reflection upon his work or work ethic towards women! I am a woman, I had Breast Augmentation done in 2005, My mother Had Lip and nose Reconstructive Surgery, My best Friend had also a Breast Augmentation done by Mr. Loessin and NOT ONE OF US WERE BOTCHED, TREATED POORLY OR EVER IGNORED UNCOMFORTABLE OR EVEN HAD A SECOND OF DOUBT THAT HE WAS A EXTREMELY ADEQUATE SURGEON! Please, take a moment to think about the difference of Work vs. . Dr.'s are TRAINED in Med. School to make quick decisions and to separate home from work! This is an unfair statement made in this report "he is abusive to women and that he is a bad surgeon because if his personal life"! He is one of the best, MOST ACCREDITED surgeon in Florida!
