hi my name is christina, and i bought a 2002 ford taurus the car ran great for a couple of months, then after those months were up, the check engine light came on. The car went down hill from there. I tried to get another car, and found out that the car is only worth $6,000, and I am paying 400 a month for 4 years. That doesnt add up to what they said was the price of the car. They told me that i would be paing 12,000 for the car thats way overcharging! on top of them over charging me, they sold me a lemon, the car doesnt even work now! I have always made my pymnts on time. I remeber when I had lost my job, they harrassed me for a pymnt after being one day late. Then i spoke with manager at the irving branch and she was so rude! she spoke to me like I was a child, it was unethical. She made threats against me. It worried me so much. In irving alone they are so rude and mean. I now haft to pay money on a car that doesnt work. And on top of that I am being seriously overcharged!

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Not far enough.

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Mrsz had some good suggestions, but they don't go far enough. Do not request a Carfax from the seller. It's childs play for them to make up a fake one and there's more than a few people who have reported here on ROR that the Carfax the dealer gave them was bogus. Do your own due dilligence and get your own Carfax.

Second, if you are not a mechanic, do not waste your time poking around under the hood. Have the car inspected by a competent independent mechanic. Most of the expensive problems you could encounter cannot be seen by having a look under the hood. Especially if you don't know what you're looking for.

Bottom line, when you buy a used car, you almost always buy it "as is". That means you own any problems it has once you drive away. Given that, doesn't it make sense to thoroughly check out the car before parting with thousands of dollars? If more people actually did this, shady used car dealers couldn't give their junk cars away (much less sell them for above book value).

#1 Consumer Comment

So sorry this happened to you.

I am sorry you got a lemon handed to you. You might try to contact the Attorney General's office in Texas to report it. You can also type in Texas Lemon Law into your search bar and it will pull up pages of links that might help you. Here is one:
(((Redacted)))

In the future, try doing a few things to help you avoid another lemon. Check the VIN number on (((Redacted))), or request a carfax report from the dealer. If they don't want to, than maybe they have something to hide.

Get the model, and make and year of the car your interested. This means shopping around before buying. Get the milage and any details you notice about the car you like, such as, dents, rust, etc, and than go to the Kelly Blue Book site and do a look up on the car to see what its worth. They take into account how much its been driven, body damages, and age and tell you what its worth. Of course the dealer will mark it up, because it is a buisness after all, and they have to survive like the rest of us, but this place charged you %100 markup.

Also, you can ask them to pop the hood, and lean in and smell. If you smell burnt smells, could be oil leaks. Sweet smells, antifreeze. Check the belts closely for cracks and breaks. Look under car for spots on the ground. Anything other than water, is cause for concern, especially dark spots which might be signs of an oil leak.

Dealers will go out of their way to put you into a bad car, cause that means its off their hands and no longer their problem. If they can over charge you, than bonus! But you can protect yourself in the future!
