I was at the Elkhart,Tx horse auction 7-28-2012. I was there looking for stolen livestock. The conditions are deplorable. Very hot and animals are dehydrated. Not one horse, mule or foal had any water. Some horses so weak they could hardly stand. Many are starving. Kill buyers with waiting trailers. A foal, maybe 2-3 months old, in a holding pen alone, no water. We witnessed it fall twice, then it was just too weak to stand . These horses are being beaten, rode or I would say made to spin for at 30 min before we had to leave. We just couldn't watch any more. A young woman riding a horse and was forcing the horse in a hard fast spin , in a small holding pen for at least 30 min, while onlookers gathered.
Sale is every Saturday night. I've heard local sheriff looks the other way when cruelty complaints are made.
Something needs to be done. Horses, mules, ponies and foals are not only suffering but dying. They just drag them to the kill buyer trailers (kill buyers buy horses to take to Mexico slaughter, look up Mexico horse slaughter on youtube also Canadian horse slaughter) . Kill buyers buy horse, mules, ponies and foals, healthy, pregnant or malnourished. There seems to be a connection between the auctioneer/auction house and kill buyers. The conditions where these animals are kept with no water in 100' temperature is so inhumane. Holding pens had containers for water but all were dry. The teenage boys constantly hit the horses in the face and body to force the scared animals to the auction ring.
I don't understand how Humane Societies can look the other way. I know this is a small town and the sale is held at night, but maybe whom ever reads this will be moved to go to the auction and walk around back and look at the holding pens. Thank you.
