Although I'm on the Do-Not Call-Register, I was cold-called on Oct-27-2014 by Robert Watkins who said he represented Enterprise Financial Group and works for National Auto Services, St Louis, MO.  It was from a spoofed telephone number in Pennsylvania. He wanted to know if I still owned a particular vehicle.  The script he was reading sounded like the ubiquitous "Extended Warranty Scam" so I allowed him to continue to see for sure.  He then tried to sell me an "extended warranty" that he claimed was identical to my factory warranty for my ten year-old vehicle for $2,975 with $395 down and $143 per month X 18 months.  He and his manager made numerous attempts to get me to give them my credit card information to make charges against.

I asked to see a copy of their proposed "extended warranty" via e-mail.  He said he was not allowed to show it to me until I gave him my credit card number and paid $395 -- only then could I see it when they send me a hardcopy package.  He said if I didn't like it for any reason, all I had to do is call him to cancel within 30 days and they would give me a full refund. I asked him about National Auto Services but he would not give me any information on it, only saying that Enterprise Financial Group has been in business for 30 years and "has had no problems."  I told him I'd have to research it and if I bought it, I'd write a check and needed his company's address. He said it was 218 Compass Point, St. Charles, MO 63301.

The reason these "extended warranty" rip off artists don't want to show you a copy of their "extended warranty" is that they are virtually worthless despite the scammers' oral lies touting them. These contracts are cleverly worded to appear on the surface to provide coverage but are loaded with specific and broad exclusionary language that makes it extremely unlikely you will ever get them to pay for a repair. Unfortunately, many people do not realize that until they've paid hundreds or thousands of dollars to these scammers and have to pay for the repair themselves.  These worthless contracts are hugely profitable for those who sell them and the underwriters but are worse than useless for consumers.  Anyone who pays for one and carefully reads these contracts and researches the countless complaints about them refusing to pay claims will want to cancel and get a refund.  But they have a rip-off ready for you in that case too.

National Auto Services' & Enterprise Financial Group's promised to provide a complete refund if I called and/or write to cancel within 30 days. It's part of the scam and only to gain confidence. They have no intention of giving a refund. I and other consumers have had great difficulty in getting extended warranty scammers to provide promised refunds.  For example, on September 24, 2014, Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson filed a lawsuit against Enterprise Financial Group, Inc. (“EFG”)—a Texas company that issues extended auto warranties—for its delays in issuing refunds owed to Minnesota consumers and its failure to follow Minnesota law.  Regarding National Auto Services Missouri Attorney General has said in report, "In recent years, the dozens of service-contract marketers have operated in St. Louis. Many have been accused of deceptively marketing the aftermarket vehicle coverage, making it difficult for customers to cancel, pocketing refund money owed to consumers and selling contracts riddled with fine-print exceptions and limitations."  That fits National Auto Services.

Don't buy an extended warranty - they are scams. If you do, cancel it in writing immediately but don't wait more than a day or two for a refund because it's not likely to come.  If they were legit, they'd put a credit on your account the same day. File a dispute with your credit card company or the bank that you used to make payment.   The credit card company will give you an immediate provisional credit until they've reviewed the case.  The scammers will likely lie and claim you didn't follow cancellation procedures; its part of their rip off process.  Be sure to provide whatever the credit card company needs to substantiate that you canceled it such as a record of telephone conversation to the scammer canceling the contract and a copy of the written notice to them to cancel the contract. A part of the credit card company's service is to protect you against this type of scam using their dispute process.  After having an extended warranty crook refuse to provide a refund, I filed a dispute with my credit card company and got all my money back - over $700. They charged it back to the scammers. It took a couple months but it was worth it.  The credit card companies are well aware of these fraudsters.
