"Prospective clients beware! When approaching various processing connections online, about 95% of them will be brokers who are simply reselling the merchant account on behalf of someone who has an account directly with the bank. The main problem with this is that the rate will get hiked up an extra percentage point or so for every hand in the pot, or every broker in the line of people ultimately connected to the one who actually has the direct relationship with the bank. The other problem in this scenario is that, because information takes so long to travel back and forth through the line of people involved, the account takes longer to setup, information get misconstrued to the bank from you and from you to the bank so that the bank might not really understand what your business does and what your processing needs are, and most importantly, the bank gets frustrated with the account thereby getting the relationship off on a bad foot.

The other 5% of those you’d reach when searching for a merchant account are processing firms that actually do have a direct connection to the bank. However, it’s oftentimes the case that they have only one direct connection to one bank where they place all of the accounts that bank is able to approve. Once something happens to that bank as sometimes it does, or once the bank decides they don’t want the account, you, the merchant, are faced with the last minute issue of having to find another account without the help of the processing firm who you’ve already educated about your business since they don’t have any other connections.
