I filed for bankruptcy in 2006, and since then I have paid off many debts including three car loans, credit cards, several small signature loans, student loans, and bank notes. I called and spoke to a representative in 2009 and they told me that my credit score should rise as long as my payments are on time. However, when I pulled my credit I was surprised to see that my score hasn't risen above 600 in the past 7 years! The bankruptcy was discharged in 2006. It should have fallen off my credit report, but hasn't! I called and asked when it would be removed, and I was told the beginning of this year! Even though I had a bankruptcy, that doesn't explain why my credit score hasn't budged in the past 7 years!! I've paid off many loans and credit cards since then and left many of those credit cards and accounts open. But nothing has changed on my credit report! Equifax and Transunion are both reporting that I have a 580! My credit score has fallen below 580, but it hasn't risen in 7 years! I should have at least a 720, or that's what I would give myself anyway. My brother also filed for bankruptcy but he has a credit score of 688! What's going on here? I thought because of my bankruptcy that's the reason my credit score was so low, but my brother also filed a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in 2011 and his credit is just fine! I'm reporting this agency for unfair credit reporting and unethical business practices!

Credit reports & Bankruptcies

AUTHOR: Striderq - (U.S.A.)

Credit reports use a 7 year cycle, that is they will reflect the last 7 years. Bankruptcies however can stay on your credit report for a period of 10 years.

You credit worthiness is low

AUTHOR: coast - (USA)

You filed for bankruptcy and then gave yourself a score of 720... hilarious! Your bankruptcy will probably cycle off this year but you will have to exercise patience because it will take time to rebuild your credit. Please don't teach your children that it's ok to bail on their financial responsibilities, as you apparently have been taught.

"I'm reporting this agency for unfair credit reporting and unethical business practices!"

Your credit score is their opinion of your credit worthiness. They can express their opinion without penalty. In my opinion it should be below 500.
