We traveled to Colorado last Christmas to ski in Aspen. That will be the last time we ever drive through Colorado.

We recieved a collections letter from Express Tolls and were convinced this was some kind of a scam. We had paid every toll we came to, so of course we didn't owe any money, right?

No, evidently in the state of Colorado there are NO tolls where you actually put money into one of those semi-circle bins and drive through after the light turns green. Instead they send you a bill six months later.

Not only was this NOT explained on the collections notice for anyone who may be unfamiliar with Colorado's "we don't like coin tollbooths rule", but it was sent six months later!!!!

On the second notice we recieved a picture of our license plate, so then I was starting to think this might be real. A letter to the law firm followed by a phone call was to no avail. They just want to know when you are going to pay the bill.

I believe that this state run company is extorting money from individuals by making these notices vague and not explaining that this is how they do things in their state. Nothing about their company makes me feel that they are legit, but what can I do? Nothing, except pay the money and complain.

That alone should be enough to tell you that this is a sketchy company. In fact when I called them the guy answered the phone like I was calling his personal cell number. He demanded to know who was calling, but his lack of professional behavior made me refuse until he told me that he worked for this lawfirm. It is a sad and dishonorable job that he has. I told him I was sorry that he worked for scam artists.

The moral here: Don't drive on E-470. And complain to whoever will listen. I wish someone had complained to me before we drove out there, because we wouldn't have taken this road.

So long, Colorado and my friends who live there. We're never going back. They can come visit us, where we are scammed out of our money through good old-fashioned taxes.
