I worked for Family Dollar for almost ten years, and am sad to say, that the bad out rate the good. Family Dollar is aware of the demands that it puts on it's store managers, and over all, know that they are asking to much. But if they can find someone to roll with the program, and keep their mouth shut about their unfair demands, then you are exactly what they are looking for. Company policies and employment laws are broken all the time, but doesn't matter as long as no one says anything about it. Only if you open your mouth about anything you think is unfair, and can possibly cause the company a lawsuit, are these situations even brought to the light. Other than that, it is just common place to work along with conditions, because if you say anything about it, sooner or later, they will find a reason to get rid if you. Anything from having to work 60 to 80 hours a week, to unloading trucks by yourself, to not being given enough payroll to have suffient number of employees in the building at all times, too having to do work as if your are a store clerk,(and not a store manager), meaning, running a register, stocking shelves, mopping floors, cleanig bathrooms, cleaning parking lots, etc. You are no more than the "Family Dollar" flunky, a gloried stocker. When they can find people who work as managers under these conditions, you are Family Dollar gold. I know, I was one of them for almost ten years. Family Dollar just needs to take a good long look at how they "REALLY" treat their store managers. If they had to work like that, meaning those at corporate level who set these standards, who they do it? I don't think so. It saves the company a tremendous amount of money to be able to use it's managers in the way that it does. You are paid a salary weekly so that they don't have to pay you for overtime. They also won't have to pay a store clerk to do the job because they can just use you and save the money. If you say anything about the work load, you are looked at differently, and as a possible threat to the company. To speak out is only to jepordize your job. So you are put in the position to just close your eyes to a lot of the unfair practices you know are going on, or risk being fired yourself. H*ll of a choice to have to make.

I Feal Bad For You

AUTHOR: Timothy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 31, 2010

You are so right.  I feel bad for you.  Like you, I put my heart into the store that I ran.  I did a great job at it.  Im am so glad for you that you got away from Family Dollar.  You will be better, trust me.  It took me sometime after I was terminated from that shithole.  But I got a better job, closer to home, better benifets, better hours, BETTER PAY, and have been and my new job for almost 3 years, yes and still enjoy it!

Don't waste your money trying to get back at them.  THEY WILL FAIL ON THERE OWN!  Trust me on this.  If you need anything, just let me know.

Your Friend,

Tim

Misuse of Store managers & asst. store managers

AUTHOR: willie - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, May 19, 2010

The unfair practices of Family Dollar are just common place. Many of the DM's are aware of these practices, but they too go along with the program to secure their jobs. It's like the "don't ask, don't tell policy". As long as they can keep what is happening in the closet, it's not a problem. You can work you fingers to the bone, put in extra hours of your own time, go over & beyond the call of duty, but it is never enough. As a store manager, you are expected to make miracles happen. You have to do your work & your employees work too. If you don't do it, then you are faulted for the work not being done. It's not that the work can"t be done, it's just that the amount of work expected is way more than physically possible in the alotted amount of time given, let alone the amount of payroll you are given to make it happen. Only if you sacrifice of yourself, meaning putting Family Dollar first above your family, your social life, and your own priorities, will you succed.. At the end of the day, you are over worked, under paid, mentally and physically stressed, and unappreciated. Your health starts to deminish right before your eyes, and still you continue to put the work in. The turn over rate for managers at Family Dollar is ridiculous. They can't keep good, hard working managers because they expect to much of them. Over the years, almost 10 years of employment with Family Dollar, I have seen so many good people go due to these conditions.. They are aware of people working off the clock, because it saves the company money. As long as you don't say anything about it, they won't say anything about it. But if you open your mouth and complain, you are then told that you were not supposed to work off the clock, and you know the company policy concerning this issue. It is held against you. You then become a threat to the company, and they will eventually find a reason to get rid of you, making it all look legal, and as if you were the one at fault. This is common practice, I know, I did it for 10 years.

i've worked for family dollar for 6 months. when i was first hired i loved it. i only live four miles from my store so i thought i couldnt be luckier. but little by little i learned otherwise. i am a asst. manager and am always being abused by upper management. i work about 48 hours a week and do everything from clean bathrooms to doing cycle counts. right now we only have 4 people on staff...our DM wont help us. we are struggling. every week is a race to get things done. im tired of killing my body for this company. my gm and i are 2 small women and we are expected to lift things that we shouldnt, shovel our parkinglot, take apart shelving units, unload truck and not to mention escort drunks out of our store. there has also been many timess when i've had to work 7 to 8 hours alone without a bathroom break or lunch. but at the same time im expected to push out frieght and run regiter. its not hard but is tiring, week after week its the same old story.i work my a*s off for family dollar and its never  enough. if we dont get some help soon i dont know if i'll continue working for this company....
