Be very careful with Fax.com. I ordered an 800 Fax number, paid the fee and then could not use the service until they "verified" my card information. All my card information was already entered at registration and they had already debited the money from my bank account via my debit card with the Visa logo.

When I called Fax.com to do the so-called verification, I was informed that I had to send them, via E-MAIL of all things, my credit card statement. There were two problems with this: 1) I'm not sending anything sensitive like a credit card statement via e-mail, which is not secure. 2) Because I used a debit card, my bank does not print the debit card number on any statement.

I called my bank and informed them of the odd request. They told me that I should not send this information to them as it is a security risk. I agreed and told them that I did not send it, but wanted to ensure that I followed correct procedure. They informed me I had.

I called Fax.com back and informed them that I had no statements which included my card information because it is a debit card. I also relayed what my bank had said about sending this type of information via e-mail or using any method whatsoever. I then asked for a refund which they refused to provide. I called my bank back, put a stop on Fax.com from being able to charge my card again and opened a dispute, which the bank honored--refunding my money.

The amount of time I had to spend to rectify this situation was not only frustrating, but gives me cause to believe that Fax.com may be engaged in some unscrupulous business practices--possibly even credit card fraud. Please beware of this new verification process and DO NOT send your credit card statement, bank statement or any other ancillary information after you have already provided it online. The only thing they should be able to do is to call and verify that you are the cardholder. Never verify the card number over the phone. They should already have the last four digits. If they do not, this should alert you to potential fraud.

Thank you and be well.
