I opened a fingerhut account either right before or after my 18th birthday (June of 2000). I ordered ONE thing, a king size comforter which I paid for in full ($69 plus shipping and interest, and a late charge when I had sent the payment overnight 5 days before it was due).

I hadn't ordered anything else when I was forced to move out of my apartment due to an un-medicated roommate, and didn't have a chance to get my stuff for several weeks. During that time, my roommate charged my fingerhut card even though I called them to cancel the account after I lost the card. They told me not to worry about it, but yet, several months later, I received a call from their collections agency - 4 years after the account.

During the only call I got from these fine specimens of annoyance in a suit, I explained to the guy on the phone everything I've written here. His response? That it really made no difference to him, and if I refused to pay (for charges I didn't even make while the account was supposedly cancelled) then it would be sent to a collections agency.

Enter the vultures.
Now, I have to deal with RJM Acquisitions LLC. And instead of anything approaching a $69 payment, I either have to pay $18.30 a month until the balance of $320.25 is cleared, or I can pay $36.60 a month until I've paid $256.20, at a 20% dicount. Oooo. Like I'm supposed to jump for joy at a 20% discount on s**t I didn't even charge.

I'm glad I looked this company up online before just scrambling to pay them. I'm planning on posting to threads of class-action suits, but not really sure how much of a case I have since I lost all of my documentation when I lost the card. Also, I've been unsuccessful in getting in touch with either company to request additional information. If anyone has any suggestions of actions to pursue, or resources available in my situation, I would be most appreciative.
