When I became ill in January of 2008 I had an account in good standing with Lowes (GE Money Bank). As a result of my illness, I lost my job and could not pay the amount required by GE Money Bank. I could barely pay for my health care and other basic needs. Yet, I was treated like a criminal. Those calling my home were rude and would not agree to anything less than the total amount due.
Finally, because stress only made my illness worse, I avoided them.
Periodically, I received a call or returned a call, but their contact was always rude and non-compromising. Afterward I just decided to wait and see if they would ever contact me with reasonable terms for repayment. It never happened.
Now, they have a lawsuit against me. Even with the lawsuit, I have no idea what they expect me to pay without a payment plan that fits my budget.

Lies

Quote: "Ramjet: But this would be all lies... Pay your bills."
If the original creditor sold the debt on the debt market and wrote it off their taxes, then the OP doesn't owe a debt to anyone, including Hanna. This is why all Hanna's debts should be questioned and proof of ownership should be demanded. They never provide it and can't win their lawsuits because they have no proof and they know it. If you fight back they will drop the case.
I think they have "bloggers" (debt collectors in cubicles that are also paid to post on Hanna's "blog" and on sites like this). If so, that would explain some of the flaming vs. debtors that goes on here. There are 53 consumer complaints on here vs. Hanna, are they all just "lies"?:

But this would be all lies, you know EXACTLY what you owe and why.
If you can get away with it and live with yourself being a certified liar, go for it.
Pay your bills.

It looks like Rip Off Report redacted my links on how to fight debt collector lawsuits for Hanna and Zwicker, and for help blogs. For help with the lawsuits you can do a Google search for a book and website by Allen Harkleroad titled Stick it to sue happy debt collectors. The help blog I linked is Next Level Unlimited Credit. I do not have any stake in any of these sites, I am just posting to try to help other consumers. I do understand why Rip Off Report redacts links however.

You have to file an answer to the lawsuit within your state's time limit (usually 20 or 30 days from the date you were served). People win 99% of these cases vs. Hanna IF they file an answer on time. See below for resources on free answers, or you could find a local atty. that does debt defense (it may be hard to find the right atty. for this). You may not want to just let it go because once they have a judgment this will last pretty much forever. If you talk to them on the phone or agree to "settle" you will never be rid of them either. If you answer and get get the lawsuit dismissed then you will be free of them forever.

The Georgia Supreme Court says Hanna is a "law firm," so you have to submit a bar complaint vs. them (and not a consumer complaint with the state OCA or federal FTC -- but fine if you do that too anyway). You may submit a bar complaint vs. Fred Hanna (the owner of the "firm") and any atty. that may have contacted you that also violated bar rules for atty.s:
(Call and ask for a bar complaint, and if they have them online):

RE: Request for Validation of Debt, 15 U.S.C. 1692g
Dear Sir or Madam:
This is my formal notice that I am disputing this debt, and requesting immediate validation under Section 809 of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, 15 U.S.C. 1692g, of the debt from your office. I am requesting that your office immediately send me a copy of the following documents: (a) the name, address, and phone number of an employee of the original creditor that can validate the debt, (b) proof of who is the current legal owner of the debt, and that you represent the original creditor or debt buyer, and (c) the original signed note, contract, credit agreement, or instrument creating the debt.
I am disputing this debt for the following reasons: this debt has not been validated. I do not know whether your debt collection company is the legal owner of this debt or not, or if the amounts charged are valid.
This is also my formal notice under 15 U.S.C. 1692c, to you to cease all further communications with me, my family members, and my associates and all third parties, unless I give you express permission to do so. You have my express permission to mail me the requested validation documents to the address listed below, but I do not give you permission to contact me over the phone, or in any other way except as specifically addressed in this letter.
This letter is not meant in any way to be an acknowledgment that I owe this money.
Sincerely,
John Doe

And you're surprised they have a lawsuit against you for what you legally owe them?
You purposely avoided their calls and it appears this account has been delinquent for about 3 years now.
Sorry about your illness, but they really don't have to set up payments according to your guidelines.
