Gateway Energy Beware of Variable Natural Gas Plans Rochester New York

Watch out for Gateway's variable gas plans.  I switched off a fixed rate plan when mine expired because the renewal rates seemed high.  They mailed out a letter saying their variable rates were "highly competitive."  Maybe for the first month or so.  BEWARE!

After the first mont, I watched my rates jump as we entered the summer and natural gas rates dropped.  I finally called to cancel as I was being charged $1.06/therm (fixed plans were going for $.59/therm).  After I cancelled, I was told it would take 60 days.  My next bill saw my rate jump to $1.47/therm!!.  I called RG&E (my distributor) who was charging $.44/therm for a variable rate at the same time!! 

After arguing with the company and two different employees, none of them would discuss the "highly competitive" letter I still had from the Spring or whether anyone else in my neighborhood was being charged $1.47.  The PSC said they can't regulate variable rates companies charge.  Big help they were.  So essentiallly, you cancel, they take their sweet time switching you out and charge you whatever they feel like it.  Do yourself a favor and stick with the major utility companies.  The rest of them are scam artists.
