Geico prides themselves on customer service, and holds themselves to extremely high standards? REALLY?

AUTHOR: Shari Garrett - ()

I was involved in a NO FAULT accident on 5/29/13 where both I and the other person were ensured by Geico. Before even seeing a police report MY OWN AGENT wants ME to accept 30% liability for the accident. Can you say SHADY?!!!

Strike #2 is when they try to get out as cheaply as possible by putting a bunch of aftermarket parts on my less than a year old car until I insisted they use OEM parts.

Strike#3 is when they refuse to pay a fair amount on my Diminished Value claim. They say I haven't proved my case but are willing to offer me $500? When I refuse they up it to $1000 but I still haven't proved my claim. Geico has been a nightmare to deal with from start to finish. I will never use them again and will tell everyone that will listen friends, family, co-workers etc. that they are by far the worst insurance company on this planet. It is pretty bad when your own agent is out to screw you at every turn.

GEICO is Only Interested in MONEY...

AUTHOR: SargeAZ - ()

I have been a customer for a few years and so far, have had no complaints.  However, When my son recently moved out of town to live with his mother and go to college, I tried to remove him from my policy but so far, have been unable to do that.  My policy would drop by about 60% without my son on it.  GEICO allowed me to remove my son's car from my policy but they will not remove my son as they say he is a "youthful driver" and they do not remove them until they have proof that they are insured by someone else.  My son is 18 years old and he went onto his mothers policy and I am trying to get proof.  My problem is this...  How can they legally FORCE me to keep him insured when he is an adult and not living with me?

wrong wrong wrong

AUTHOR: strawberryshortcake - (United States of America)

Hail damage -comprehensive claims unless in excess (possible fraud) are not used for rating purposes unless you may be brand new to company and have an already questionable driving activity.

Uninsured motorist claims also do not affect your rates unless there is potential fraud or contributory circumstances that finds you more or partly negligent.

Lastly yes most at-fault accidents can affect your rate if the payout exceeds a certain amount or you receive a ticket in conjunction.

However the key thing is this person said they have been insured with GEICO for 5 years, in most states after 5 years you qualiy for accident forgiveness of your first At-Fault accident.

To the origional poster thank you for taking the time to not just complain.

Tone down the arrogance, please...

AUTHOR: Zack - (U.S.A.)

To the Geico employee who wonders why so many disgruntled people have posted on this forum:

I am also a Geico customer, and my experience with Geico has been mixed over the years. Certainly, like any other insurance company, Geico can and does make mistakes. Customer service often does a good job, but here too there are exceptions. I have no doubt the complaints on this forum are legitimate, and should be treated as such.

To dismiss all the complaints on this forum as being left by people who "are not happy unless they are complaining about something" is the height of arrogance. I would hate to have to deal with someone like you if I had an issue to resolve with Geico. Your lack of respect for your own customers is glaring.

Response to employee Melissa and some others.

AUTHOR: Justin S. - (United States of America)

I was a Geico policy holder for a few months and they dropped my coverage after 2 not at fault accidents. The first accident the other driver admitted fault and the second was a hit and run and I had witnesses.
2 days after paying for the new month Geico cancelled my policy for those accidents and another not at fault a year earlier when I had a different insurance company where the other guy also admitted fault for not looking before switching lanes at a red light.
Not only did they send notice of my policy cancellation 2 days after the new month and making a payment but then they billed me an extra 40 dollars for time insured. My monthly bill was 100 dollars and they tried charging me 40 for 2 days and that was after paying my month premium.
I called them on this and they ran me around in circles from person to person. Now they have sent me to collections over this and all this was after I had already paid my month. I am not paying half my monthly premium for 2 days of coverage especially after dropped me for being "high risk" when my accidents were not at fault. They should not be allowed to get away with this.

The things people say and do

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

Just because you paid an accident out of your own pocket, for some odd reason doesn't mean that the accident didn't happen.

When you are looking for insurance, insurance companies don't ask you for the number of accidents that you have had that the insurance company paid out for. They ask for an and all accidents you have been involved in with in a certain time frame.

Just because you signed some type of contract with the other driver doesn't mean that it is binding with GEICO.

What happened is nothing that wouldn't happen with any insurance company.

On a side note...

You are wrong with most of the information that you are saying, such as hail.

I would not recommend anyone contact him because most the information he just said is not correct.

Insurance rates can go up for a multiude of reason for having an at-fault accident whether you pay or not.

You could lose your good driver discount.

Different states have different things about an accident that can be surchagered for example the amount of damage meets a threshold. As far as I know, it has no bearing on if you or the insurance company paid it.

Insurance rates are based on statistics involving the company's experience, your rate is likely to be affected even if you pay the claim yourself - because the statistical likelihood of your having another accident in which the company will have to pay has increased.

I plagiarized that last paragraph.

For the most part, I hope you have learned you pay for insurance for a reason. Use it, it's what it is there for.

Geico only looks out for themselves

AUTHOR: Pedro - (U.S.A.)

True story.

Two weeks ago, I was involved in an accident. I was at fault. I told the driver that I would be willing to pay for the damage out of pocket. I only filed with Geico because due to my contract, I am to report any accident that happens. I gave all the information to Geico but I told them that I was going to pay for the damages out of pocket. Last night, the two parties involved signed a document stating that after payment of 1140.76 was received that both parties waive the right for further legal action against the other.

It was also mentioned that Insurance companies would not become involved. All the documents were witnessed and notorized. I then called Geico to close the claim and told them that I would be able to fax or send a copy of the contract. They said that they have to call the other party to verify my account. I told Geico that they were not to get involved and read the contract verbatim. They said that they were required to do that to protect their own interests as well as mine. I said that if Geico called the other driver it would open a lawsuit against me from the other driver. They ignored my pleas.

Geico contacted the other driver even though I was able to produce legal documents that stated the matter was resolved. Each time they said they were looking after my best interests but failed to explain how exposing me to a lawsuit and not representing me due to their action was looking after my best interests. I filed several complaints because the attitude of the claims adjuster was atrocious and they created smoke-screens to allow the Geico representative to contact the other driver.

The only reason why I am staying with Geico is because on May 19th one charge comes off and I will be able to get a lower premium somewhere else. Geico does not look out for their customers, they only look out for themselves. I will never file a claim with Geico again. All those people who said they filed a claim against accidental damage and had their premium lowered without changing anything is lying. I have an email that contradicts that:

Please be advised that at this time, the accident that occured on xx/xx/xx is not a surchargeable accident since GEICO has not paid out any property damage payments to the claimant. If GEICO does payout any money to the claimant, the loss will become surchargeable. You will see a reflection of this surcharge at your next renewal. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reply to this email or call me at the number below.

Note that if Geico Pays out any money, the loss will become surchargeable. I will assume this also includes accidents due to Hail, etc.

#11 UPDATE EX-employee responds

here is why they leave

AUTHOR: Barbara - (U.S.A.)

As an ex employee and an exemployee I am pretty sure I know why they leave...First let me say that I did not change my auto policy right when I left the company did it a year or so later. Second let me say that I do not work for a different insurance company so I have no bias. With that said..

When I had GEICO insurance (not my choice the only reason was because when I got married my husband had a policy there and I was just coming off of my moms so it was cheaper for me to be added to his) we had several problems. First, we must have called 10 times to get the rental reimbursement added everytime the customer service person would say "I don't see it here but I would be glad to add it for you" which is great if they added it but it would never get on there we would call back and same thing. Sometimes they would add road service by accident instead of rental. Why would I want their lame road service plan, AAA is soooo much better. Another thing, my husband was in his first at fault accident after being with GEICO for years. We had to fight with them to cover the rental...luckily we started keeping names dates and times of our phone calls to GEICO several months before, they wouldn't even cover a comparable car to his (and yes the comparable car was within the limits of the reimbursement)instead he had to go with the bottom of the line I think it was like a hyundai accent. He drives a luxury car they could at least give him a camry, anyway to get the car into their preferred shop fixed and back took like 3 months and even it was a bad job.

Another reason, they say they are 24 hours but in the middle of the night there are no underwriters, no claims (yes they will take a claim report but won't do anything about it) pretty much the people that work at night can start a policy, take a claim report and do basic stuff on the policy. And about calling managers, at least at the san diego office, the managers and supervisors phones don't even have voice mail they just ring and ring and ring until someone comes to their cubicle and answers it.

Another reason is that when you call them to make a change and that is all you want to do they need to just get their a** off the phone...no I don't want autowithdrawal (they have tons of problemms with theirs) I pay my bills on time, no I don't want emergency road service, for the 50th time no I don't want an umbrella policy, I like my coverages, no I don't want medical coverage for myself and my passengers and on and on and on. They think that it is customer service when really they are just wasting my time. Yeah and when they put you on hold they are usually just trying to find out what they can sell you. I am with state farm and when they offer me stuff it is stuff I truly need because they know me, they know my family, they know what properties I own, which I rent which I live in. All that personal service and it is cheaper than GEICO's very unpersonal service and all of the people in that office are licensed insurance agents. Most of GEICO's employees (except for in sales) are not licensed. Oh yeah and they don't send you to another company for homeowners insurance, it is all under one roof and one payment. I can also speak for their claims department...it is great fast and they didn't even make me pay my deductible while they were waiting to get reimbursed by the other drivers company.

GEICO ranks down there with e-surance and freeway...the general too.

you people are all funny...geico lovers and geico haters alike

AUTHOR: Barbara - (U.S.A.)

First off I am in no way disgruntled I left GEICO to go from the measley $36,000 they were paying me to well into the $80,000 range. They were trying to get me back for about 2 months after I left but financially it didn't make sense.

Paul...I bet when they were telling you your policy cancelled for non payment they were also trying to upsell you something. GEICO employees are taught to upsell at all costs. The people in charge over there don't understand that if someone is calling in to make a payment the day after their policy cancelled, because they know they have a few days after in cancels where coverage would still extend if they made a payment they had to cancel autowithdrawal a couple months ago because they are not working and the money to pay is coming from several different places and GEICO wants you to advise them to get electronic funds transfer...hello did they not hear the client. In customer service at GEICO it is sell sell sell. What happened to customer service.

Jan your list of violations misses the law suit where GEICO had to pay a ton of money in 2003 to employees and ex employees for running the place like a sweat shop. I got like $5000 from that.

There have been a few class action law suits against GEICO.

Oh yeah and the person talking about ratings. GEICO just lost one of theirs...do some more homework.

To the person in texas who is a GEICO lover...did you know that GEICO is run differently in tx than any other state. When you call in you have to speak with a texas agent because the state of tx regulates GEICO heavily. All comments from texas need to be thrown into a seperate discussion because they might as well be seperate companies.

to the person who thinks rates never go down...can I be your insurance agent? Do some homework. I would suggest a company with an agent they tend to be a lot more informative.

hmm why would you accept a rate that doubled?

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

Phil, my question to you is why would you accept a rate that doubled? What was their reason, it must have been justified some how, or you wouldn't pay it correct?

Please explain, leaving things like that out, to me anyhow, seems like trying to hide something.

You may not be, but it is against the law to change a rate for no reason. Other wise know as bait and switch.

There are reasons a rate can change. Not all states have or had, they may now i don't know, the ability to have an instant mvr. Sometime the mvr may take a while to get to a company.

Did your rate go up for unreported accidents or tickets or other inccurate information?

Curiosity, I would like to hear from c.hope on how the claim went with GEICO.

problems with geico

AUTHOR: Phil - (U.S.A.)

I bought a new car in June of 2005 and switched from Progressive to Geico thinking I would get lower rates. It has been pure hell dealing with Geico.

The initial quote they gave was changed two weeks after the policy was issued to nearly double what they quoted me.

Since, in actuality, it was about $10/month more than Progressive, I paid the premiums monthly.
On October 27th,2005 I called to make my insurance payment and was informed that the policy had been cancelled since Oct 17th due to non-payment. I asked how this was possible since I was relying on the information that they had billed me with. The customer service rep didn't know why except that the policy was cancelled.

So I paid off the balance of the previous policy and Geico issued a new one with the same policy number. As it turns out, Geico says that my insurance never lapsed and it showed cancelled due to a computer error.but they still charged me all the fees for issuing a new policy. I asked why they are charging me for a new policy and they say it was because the old one was cancelled.

So, I ask , was it ever cancelled, they say no. then why are you charging me to re-issue the policy? Because it was cancelled. But you said it never cancelled and that was due to a computer error. That is absolutely right, you had coverage all long.

Then why are you charging me to re-issue the policy? Because it was cancelled. But you said it wasn't cancelled. it wasn't, that was due to a computer error.(This is a loop)

So anyway, they send me a bill saying I owe $78 for Nov 29th payment. Then they send me another bill saying I owe $418 for Nov 27th payment. So I call them to find out what is going on(This is where the loop starts. The policy was never canceled and I had coverage the whole time but since the policy was cancelled,I had to pay the premiums for the old policy(with the same account number) So I am working two jobs and don't have a lot of time to be on hold for twenty mionutes with Geico but I made sure the premiums were paid. I paid the Nove 27th payment. Since I am going out of town for the holidays, I called to make my December payment and they tell me the policy was cancelled nov 27th due to non-payment.

So now I am submitting all the erroneous paperwork they sent me,which I kept, including my bank statements to the Florida Department of Financial services but I have had no coverage since Nov 27th which means I could get my license suspended and will definetely pay out the ass to get a new policy(Definately not with Geico)

They are beyond sucks, they are gravely affecting my financial health and jeapordizing my ability to legally drive.

Proud to work for Geico

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

I am a proud employee of Geico. I can tell you that we don't just drop policyholders for no apparent reason. One post earlier said that he had 5 incidents. Well it really depends on what the "incident" was. If you are prone to accidents and tickets, you might very well be a risk that we do not want to insure, as any reasonable company shall tell you. We do indeed pride ourselves on our customer service, and we hold ourselves to extremely high standards. We are a ethically strong company, and we are certainly not out to lose customers. We have well over 6 million policyholders, so we know we must be doing something right. We are very forthright in how we conduct ourselves. And rates do not always increase as a previous person stated. We do look at discounts any time they are available, and if we can save someone money, we will certainly do everything in our power to do so. Many of our customers have been with us for many, many years, which is a testament to how we conduct ourselves. We consistantly score a A++ rating for financial stability, and we have an award winning website as well. Our customer service is second to none. Are we absolutely perfect? Of course not. Do we try the best we can and look to exceed expectations on a daily basis? Most definitely. We want to keep and bring as many people to Geico as we can, because we feel we offer the best product on the market. We know there are many companies that sell insurance, which is why we strive to be the best we can be. Sometimes Geico will make a mistake. We are human after all. However, to say that we are trying to get one over on customers is certainly untrue. If that were the case, I'd imagine we would have many customers leaving Geico. Thank you and take care to all.

How can they be so cheap?

AUTHOR: Mark - (U.S.A.)

I've been reading all the info here about Geico and decided to call them for a quote on my 3 vehicles.
I've been with Nationwide for 29 years and feel that I've been treated very fairly and have had a few claims, all settled fine.
I called Geico and got a quote, dollar for dollar, coverage for coverage, compaired to my current NW policy. Geico gave me a quote that was $426 LESS per 6 months than NW. How can this be? Is the company really that good? Or is someone blowing smoke here?

Please no what you are talking about

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

To the last poster, for your knowledge points on an insurance policy and points on a MVR report are two different things.

A certain amount of points on your MVR and they will suspend your license, any type of violation could be a possible point towards insurance which is going to raise you rate and most like the if that insurance agent said that ticket is a point with them, I'm sure it is.

What reason does he have to lie to you, please know how things work before you add to the comments.

They also try to make you pay more for your premium. Here is how.

AUTHOR: Serge - (U.S.A.)

I've got there quote on the internet and it appeared to be the lowerest. But when I start calling to buy one (I had to, because they ask you if your chsen coverage below 30000/60000)the insurance agent Ray, when he pulled my wife's DMV record, tried to convince me that she had a point for her car-pool violation.I asked him twice: Are you sure? He was 100% positive. That wasn't truth. And next day I've run into DMV to check if they made any mistake. I've got my official DMV print-out and it lists the violation but has ZERO points given. So there is another example of haw Geico does its bussines.

CARRIER'S MAKE LIABILITY DECISION BASED ON EVIDENCE

AUTHOR: Ann (Red) - (U.S.A.)

This is in response to Nurija's post of 11/21/04 wherein the complaint was that GEICO would not pay for damages to the car.

I do not and have never worked for GECIO. I worked as a subrogator for 14 years for 2 other carriers. I know that many people do not really understand the inner workings of insurance claims and wanted to pass along the likely reasons why GEICO is not paying on your claim. These are the same things that I had to tell my insureds in similar circumstances.

First: since there was no police report made and no witness statement provided, this accident is considered a word v word situation. No insurance carrier is going to take your word before their insureds without evidence to the contrary. Your version of the loss is not considered evidence. (not even in court)

Second: You state that your carrier would not assist you in getting your money from GEICO because you only have liability. This is correct. It is illegal for any carrier to attempt to recover monies they did not pay out. The only exception is when they have paid out and you have a deductible. Most states allow the carrier to include the deductible in the recovery amount. (this is called subrogation).

Three: The reason GEICO did not come back to your carrier for payment is because they likely realize that they have no evidence to prove a case against you that will stand up in court or inter-company arbitration. It is not cost effective for them to attempt to pursue recovery.

You stated that there was a witness. If you have the witnesses name and number, you can provide that to GEICO - they would have to contact the witness for a statement. However, I have known numerous claims adjustors from many companies that will not bother with getting a statement that proves their insured is at fault. You may want to contact the witness yourself and see if they will give you a notarized statement. You also have the option of hiring your own attorney and pursuing this in court. A subpoena can be issued to the police officer involved and the witness. The officer may not appear voluntarily, but a subpoena is a court order. An attorney in the area could best advise you of your chances. (Note: some witnesses totally ignore subpoenas)

I can tell you that based on the information that you provided, if you had collision coverage with either of the companies I worked for, we would have paid your damage, denied liability to the other party and closed the file at that point. Unless we could obtain a recorded statement from the witness, there is no evidence to prove who is at fault.

I'm sorry you had the accident but unfortunately, it all boils down to what can be proven in court in order to get paid for your losses.

response to Michael from Arizona, I dont think I was ignorant

AUTHOR: Nurija - (U.S.A.)

Michael, I dont think I was ignorant. I failed to supply the paperwork???In the whole USA the police file a report on their activity especilally after responding to a call. Except in Washington DC. Since I never dealt with DC police in this subject, how would I know what the rules are. once I was driving to Indiana to world chanpionchip in Basketball ( yugoslavia-Argentina ) and I was pulled over b/c I didnt merge to the left ( from the far right lane) when I saw that some truck/trailor was being pulled over( on the shoulder). I got citation b/c I was from MD and the officer said he would expect me not to know about local law.as I said I didnt know about the rule in DC. And why would Geico give me so non sense answers every time I would inquire about it? Just so those five days would expire and then check them selfs for the report. Once they found out that there was no report, they could do anything. Why didnt Geico claim for the ladies repairs( from my ins. company if I was at fault)?

Also as a vehicle safety state inspector of the state of Maryland (my self) who buys parts wholesale for my own cars and fix the car myself, how come it cost me well over $2000.00 for parts only, not including labor and paint job? their $500.00 demage estimate wouldnt cover it anyway. Also they told me that they checked with the witness, but the witness was willing to go to the court if was called( he way never checked by geico). PS. Geicos customer has failed to even report the accident to geico. Most likely she forgot she was involved in one.

How do they know it was not my fault?
As I said the demage on my car was the front right wheel and fender area( also the strut, strut insert got bent, bearing, lover contol arm, bushing for the same anti-sway bar link and bar itself...) and her demage was ; driver side door and rear left door( the one right behind the driver. Now position two car next to each other and see who was in whos blind spot. Now in what state of your mind would you have to be to assume that I was trying to merge to the right, in almost stop and go trafic, when even if I was looking straight ahead, I would see her wehicle?

Ladies and gentlamen, I would ask you not be making comments on comments. This web site is for customers to express their experiance as customers and individuals. Only if you are personally involved in the mentioned cases, then I guess it would be expected from you to respond. We all come here to read about experiances before we make desitions, not to fix our ego, ignorance, or lonlyness. thruought the web site there are more cursings, calling names, than actual complaints.
Wishing the best to all people,
Nuri
PS For everyone who travels thru Maryland:
If you are involved in a car accident, police will not come to the scene if there are no hurt people.you will be ordered to move your vehicle from travel lanes. So if you are not hurt and it was not your fault, you got no way to prove it.
Just make sure to tell the police over the phone that your mind is still in shock and you are not sure( I have stepped on a land mine and didnt feel a thing until seven days later. If I couldnt see my foot - or whatever left of it- I would have no idea I was hurt). If another person act right away as if she feels pain , then make sure there are police at scene.

But hey thats just my experiance, my feelings and my judgement. Yours might be different. I just checked for complains on my ins. company. If I am looking for isn.company then the one im with wouldnt be my first choise( based on responses), but I personally am fine with them. It is all what WE need , what WE expect, and what WE get.
Onse again, good luck to every one.

Regarding Nurija's comment

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

So you are blaming the company for your ignorance of the law in the area you live? Then you expect you would be asking the insurance company to take your word over their customer's since you failed to supply the paperwork within the required time frame.

I bet if they would have then she would be the one in here complaining about Geico. Companies can't win sometimes. I would rather they lean toward their customer. How do they know it wasn't your fault?

Justified Complaints: the number of justified complaints closed against the company for the line of insurance and year indicated. A complaint is justified if there is an apparent violation of a policy provision, contract provision, rule, or statute, or there is a valid concern that a prudent layperson would regard as a practice or service that is below customary business or medical practice.

Complaint Ratios: the ratio, expressed as a percentage, is the number of closed justified complaints divided by the number of policies the company had in force for the line of insurance and year indicated.

Complaint Index: indicates how a company's ratio of the number of complaints to the number of policyholders compares to the average for all insurers. The index is calculated by dividing the company's percentage of complaints for a specific line of insurance by the company's percentage of the policies in force for the same line of insurance. The average index is 1.00. A number less than 1 indicates fewer complaints than average; a number greater than 1 indicates more complaints than average. For the most recent completed year, a given insurer's index may change over time, as policy count data is received by TDI. This will affect each insurer's percentage of the total.

Complaints against an insurance company are not part of the complaint tally above if the insurance company served only as a Third Party Administrator (TPA), a company hired simply to administer the paperwork of a health plan. Instead, they are included in the complaint record of the insurance company or HMO that hired the TPA. If a bonafide self-insured benefit plan hired the TPA, no complaint numbers are recorded as a part of the company/TPA's profile. Neither are profiles available for self-insured plans, as such plans are regulated under federal law.

...just another GEICO gecko doing the RIP YOU OFF DANCE!

AUTHOR: Jan - (U.S.A.)

I have a GEICO complaint listed here at a another date and I agree with everyone that hates GEICO. If you don't believe us you will some day.

Compare how many GEICO complaints there are compared to any other insurance company. It's like a million to one. It will amaze you!

If that doesn't convince you may want to consider that GEICO pays their appraisers and auto salvage employees commissions on how much money they save the company when doing their damage appraisals ( that pays them for ripping you off).

Now doesn't that just speak for itself? The high end insurance copanies pay their appraisers set salaries with no commissions so they aren't dipping into their own pockets when they give you a fair appraisal on your auto's damage, this comes into play especially if yur car is
"totaled."

If you check these things out you will find that GEICO is horrific and you are just lucky you have not been in one of our situations. Probably,GEICO has a few honest employees out there and you have been lucky enough to encounter them. You might want to change to a higher end company before you have an experience lke the rest of us have. It's worth any increase in premium. And believe me their television ads about 97% customer satisfaction are the worst lie yet. I mute them, fast forward through them, and curse at them.
Are you sure that GEICO gecko isn't red, have horns, a spear and a forked tail?

Geico- no common sense, insulting and stupid commercials

AUTHOR: Nurija - (U.S.A.)

Not only that Geico has insulting and stupid commercials, Geico is the company you need to beware of.

In Septemner 11th of 2002 I was slammed not once but two times by some , I think she was 78 years old driver.I was going home form work in the afternoon, planing to take Canal road from MCArthur Blvd(towards MD from DC). As you know, from 3PM to 7PM there are 2 lanes(left and center) that merge onto Canal Rd.I was in the center lane. All of a sudden, a car that was in the far right lane tries to merge onto canal rd. in the middle of "Y" shaped intersection. She hit my front right fender and wheel with her drivers door once, pulled to the right sped up and hit me the second time with her rear left door. I think thats when she finally realised she got in an accident. She didnt even hit the brakes just slowely mowed to the right and the hit the curb. The speed was less than 20MPH.We both got out and she started saying that I hit her.She repeated it so much that I started getting very upset. I told her that i called police and they are coming and she can tell them that not me.But still. Before I would unrully react, I walked a few hundreds feet away. When police came we explained to the officers what happened. Even the officer smiled on her comments and explanation, stating that she was at fault. There was a witness also. The officer ( badge #911, same as date) gave us papers to fill out and send them in if we are unable to deal with insurance companies.

The officer never told me nor I knew that in Washington Dc you have 5 days to turn that paper in in order to have an officer file a report.I didnt know.So I called Geico explained what happened (Geico is the ladies ins.company), Ive got the claim number and was told that they will get in touch with her and than let me know.

Geicos adjuster came a few days later gave me an estimate of about $500.00 ( Later the damage was well over 2000.00)but.... No calls from Geico. Every time when I would call they would give me different answer. One of them was that their insuree is dead for 5 years now.

On my question how come Geico provides insurance on dead people she hung up on me. Finally after 13 days they called me just to say that they got in touch with this woman and she told them that she was in the center lane and I was in the left, but like I was trying to merge into the far right lane??? so they will take her word. I went to the second district police station to see what I can do and if the plice officer would come to the court if I sue this woman and Geico, police told me that the officer most likely won't come.So that was it.

to make a long story shorter here is what happened:
Gaico accused me of being at fault so they would pay for the demage only on Geicos insuree and skip paying for the demage on my car.

How do I know? I have called my insurance company to ask for help( No avail) since I had only liability coverage on my car. But guess what ? Geico never made a claim to my company to pay for the lady's car , since they believe it was my fault.Anyway... I have 3 cars, and even if I would loose my insurance for any reason and Geico would be the only one offering it to me...I would refuse and use metro and walk rather than be with them.

I only wish this to ALL Geico's employees WHO WERE involved in this case:
I wish the same happenes to their drearest members of their families at much higher speeds. What goes around comes around.

I believe there are many honest Geico employees,
but after my experiance and after reading all these reports about Geico.....Thanks, but no.

What I have gotten from this

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

Thank you all for the comments you have made here. I was sitting here today looking for a new policy for my motorcycle. Not becasue I am being dropped from my current company, but because I am looking for better rates. In the process I wanted to see if the company I got the best quote from, Geico, had any complaints.

I am a realist and know that any company will have unhappy customers, in my opinion, it is to be expected. The fact so many people have spoken up and rebutted the original report tells me alot about Geico.

I am expecting a call from Geico at 5pm and I will be purchasing a new policy from them. The fact is they offered the best rates of the companies I called and saving me more than $200 a year when compared with my current policy. That combined with all the positive comments I read here made my decision for me.

Lastly, to the complaint I read about being dropped for having five claims in a year. Did it really surprise you that they would drop you for such a history? It was not a surprise to me.

satisfied GEICO policyholder for over 29 years

AUTHOR: Bill - (U.S.A.)

I have been a satisfied GEICO policyholder for over 29 years. The reason I am writing, I recently recieved an invitation to change to another insurance carrier. Checking their standing with policyholders, I fairly rapidly noted that it would be a SERIOUS mistake to take my business to them. They are being sued for disreputable business practices in several states and don't deserve more comment than that. To provide contrast to my decision process, I decided to see what, if any, GEICO customers had to say about their experiences with my carrier. It is readily apparent to me that for a consumer to actively support any insurance carrier is tangentially relative to commiting treason. But, with that said, "Give me Liberty" ....GEICO has always treated me fairly, honestly and in a refreshingly timely fashion. They consistently demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism and integrity. To those who post difficulty in dealing with them - I suggest they suffer that dilemma with nearly everyone they deal with. While it is possible I could be wrong, the statistics tell all. I read all of the posts here and there are only two that are vehmently negative. The remainder praise a company that has served the rest of us very, very well during our tenure with them. Hats off to you GEICO - Keep up the great work!

Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics Geico Employees

AUTHOR: Darren - (U.S.A.)

Curtis (and other Geico Employees),
I have heard the 97% renewal rate mentioned here from your post and from others. That is great and something to be proud of.

However, if we look at the large number of people that havn't had to file a claim, just automatically went with the renewalk and saw no reason to try for another company (either through being happy, status quo, or laziness) then we should expect a large number of renewals.

3% doesn't sound like much, but if there are 5,000,000 customers like mentioned, that means that 150,000 are leaving.

If they hire a person to bring in 100 or so new policy holders like you mentioned the 90 new customers that you signed up... then look at how many employees it takes to replace the 150,000 policy holders that don't renew. What? About 125 employees? Give or take some? With an average of salary, commission (if paid, I don't know salary structure and it really isn't relevant) benefits and all that, it probably comes out well over $5 million a year. This is just to replace the ones lost... not to necessairly increase the net number of customers.

That is why it is a general rule of thumb that it is cheaper to keep a customer than it is to get a new customer.

There is no way as an outsider I can say why they left and really, if I were to postulate, it would leave me open to somone making a case about how wrong I am and missing the point of this post.

My point here is that because your company does such a good job and has such great marketing and reputation most consumers have high expectations.

Also, when the focus continues to be that your company is so good because of the 97% it caueses laziness and excuse making as to why it has to be the customer becuase your company is so good.

Those 97% of the happy people are obviously not the ones that need the assistance of your company to be there on their side... it is the 3% that feel a need to leave for one reason or another.

This is where exit surveys, consumer feedback and innovative ways of trying to improve can help.

Complacency and resting on your laurels can really hurt a company. Please don't dismiss out of hand the experiences of the people posting here. It does them, or your company a disservice.

Thanks

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

i am glad your company worked out well for you, geico i mean, but your comment about dealign with my own insurance, unfortunally, i could not afford to pay my 500 dollar deductable and "wait" around like you suggested, i was in the middle of a move to NYC and was very very VERY tight on cash, they hit ME it was their Fault, i was not going to turn my life upside down and figure out how to pay my company when i should not have too.

Once i got an appointment the claims guy was great i had a rental it all worked out, but getting that appointment was nuts! the 1st lad yggave me an apoint two weeks away! i mean thats insane, but like i said before i called back and spoke with a diffrent lady and manager and it all worked out (the manager called me back from the voice mail i left) that was nice ... and we talked and i told him the GOOD agent on the phone, and the bad one.. so it all worked out in the end, but man it was a PAIN

pleasantly satisfied service and rates

AUTHOR: Teresa - (U.S.A.)

I have had a motorcycle policy with Geico for almost 4 years now. Each year my rates go down as well. I think part of it is because of consistency of policy. The longer you are with them, the lower your rates go. Surprisingly, this year my rates went up so I called to find out why. Turns out a computer glitch deleted the fact that my husband was married, and was pricing him as single. He was still rated married, but priced single. The customer rep I spoke with we very pleasant, did the research to find the problem, and corrected it immediately, saving me almost $200. Then she went and looked over my policy for the past 4 years. That's where she discovered the error happened when we moved 2 years ago. She not only adjusted my policy for this year, she went back to last year's policy and is refunding the over charge. After reviewing the rest of my policy she found other ways to save and enhance my coverage. - On to the claims issues... We have had 2 claims on our motorcycle policy. The first time my husband was rearended on the freeway by an atempted hit-and-run. Another vehicle saw the accident and forced the other driver to stop. My husband got the license plate number of the vehicle, but the driver gave him bogus name, phone number, and insurance info. The damage to the bike was over $1000. Gieco paid the claim immediately, less the deductable. Then after the case was reveiwed and the fault was clearly the other driver, Geigo refunded our deducatable to us. Second occurance was damage to the paint on a custom tank and custom saddle. Geigo again paid the claim immediately, less the deductable. I have been very impressed with their service and handling of all of my concerns. I would not even consider changing my motorcycle coverage to anyone else. In fact, the reason I am even reading this trail is because I am researching switching my auto coverage of 5 vehicles to another vendor. Since Geico has been good for the bike, I thought they might be good for the cars and truck as well.

In reading this trail it appears that some of the claims issues are quite different. I have not had a medical claim, so I'm currious if anyone else has had trouble with Geico paying out on medical bills, related to traffic accidents.

My comment to the person who made a claim that was not insured with Geico. Quite honestly, it doesn't make sense to be dealing directly with the other person's insurance company. Make your claim with your own insurance company first. They will go after Geico, or whomever the other person is insured with, to collect on your behalf. Hello...that's what insurance is for. We pay the premium and they deal with all the headaches for us. In my case, Geico was able to track down the driver of the almost hit-and-run. His insurance company claimed my husband backed up into him...on the freeway, no less. What a bozo! Motorcycles don't have reverse. Plus, we had a witness to the accident. Anyway, Geico dealt with all the legal issues, witness reports, police reports, the other insurance company, and who knows what else. It took nearly six months to get it all cleared up. Can you imagine what a hassle that would have been if we had to fight the other insurance comany ourselves?

HAPPY WITH GEICO

AUTHOR: BRUCE - (U.S.A.)

I. BRUCE MOQUIN OF ROCHESTER,N.Y. HAVE BEEN WITH GEICO FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS. THE ONLY TIME THEY QUESTIONED ME WAS AFTER THE THIRD TIME I HAD MY WINDSHEILD BROKEN. AND THEY JUST ASSKED PARTICULARS WHICH I UNDERSTAND AS COMMON SENCE.

OF COURSE THE WINDSHEILD WAS REPLACED WITHOUT DELAY. FORTUNATELY I HAVE NOT BEEN THE CAUSE OF AN ACCIDENT AND WAS INVOLVED IN THREE ALL OF WHICH GEICO STOD BY ME AND I WAS IMEDIATELY APPROVED FOR A BRAND NEW RENTAL TILL MY VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED.

GEICO ALSO MADE CERTAIN THAT I WAS REIMBURSED FOR DAMAGE TO THE ANTIQUES I HAD IN MY VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE LAST ACCIDENT. . THEY WENT AFTER THE OTHER PARTY THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE AND I WAS TOLD IMEDIATELY THAT THE WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM CAUSED BY THE ACCIDENT.

ALSO----I JUST HAPPENED TO LOVE THE L'IL LIZARD REPRESENTING THE REPTILIAN VIEW THAT HAS LONG BEEN OVERLOOKED. I ALMOST LOOK FORWARD TO MY NEXT ACCIDENT. YOU CAN SIGN ME SINCERELY ,A VERY VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER OF GEICO.

Why are there so many disgruntled people in here!!!

AUTHOR: Curtis - (U.S.A.)

Yes, I am also a GEICO employee. But, I first would like to say that I was a policyholder 6 months before I became a employee. I joined GEICO because of the honesty that I received from the sales agent that sold me my policy. I had an accident and 2 tickets and the agent stated that when my policy comes up for renewal that my rate could go down.

Well when my policy renewed it dropped $400 dollars. I here the lady talking about our rates. Well miss, I would hate to inform you that just because we were high for you doesn't mean that the other 90+ people I have sold policies to this month thought so. We have one of the best ratings in the country as far as our customer service is concerned. And to add to that, we also have one of the best ratings from AM Best for our financial stability.

We have over 97% of our customers renew with us every year. Let me know what other companies have all of the credibility that I have listed above. You will probably be up all night trying to find out. while your at it why dont you go ahead and call GEICO for a quote since we are there for you 24 hours a day.

The simple fact is that some people have to find something to complain about or they are not happy. Too all of the current GEICO policyholders on here, we appreciate your business and if you ever have a problem, dont hesitate to call!!

Regarding Robert's rebuttal, I am a GEICO employee, but that does not make me biased.

AUTHOR: Melissa - (U.S.A.)

Robert,
I don't see anywhere in my rebuttal that I was calling anyone, including you, a liar. Yes I am a GEICO employee, but that does not make me biased...it makes me an insider. I deal with claims every day and have been doing so for years. I know GEICO's strict guidelines for handling claims. Yes, people make mistakes and occasionally a claim is not handled the way GEICO dictates it should be, but these cases are not common. Regardless of fault, you are always entitled to file through your own insurance company under your collision coverage and they will then recover the money. The reason I believe it would have taken you longer through your own company is because I see evidence of it all the time. Most other insurance companies are not open 24 hours a day and on weekends. A lot of them do not have as many inspection sites to take your vehicle as GEICO.

In addition to being an employee, I am a GEICO insured. I switched to GEICO because my previous insurance company (one of the largest companies out there) had messed up one of my claims royally. I have not even looked elsewhere since switching because rates aren't a factor to me. I trust GEICO's claims handling and know they offer great customer service (again because I know what's required of us).

I am not biased. I stumbled on this site purely by accident and am by no means getting paid to reply. If I agreed with any of the comments but did not want to say so out of sheer loyalty I would not have responded at all.

Geico trys to weasle out of any thing they can.

AUTHOR: Pete - (U.S.A.)

Geico should pay the gecko lees and treat their customers better.

I hate Geico. Their rates are lousy, and so is their service. I had a problem 3 years back. The State road crew were weed-wacking dead grass in a median(it had not rained in 3+ weeks). I was hit in the arm with a stone, and my paint was chipped.

The damage was $600+.

Geico had a claims adjuster(a little coporate weasle)say the damage was JUST UNDER my DEDUCTABLE!!

He did this, so Geicoo did not have to help me.

I took the KIA(don't ever buy one, thats another report)to 4 other places. Every place bid fom $570-$700 for my damage.

I had to go to the Attouney General(the BBB did ZERO to help)for help. They put the squeeze on Geico, and AFTER A YUEAR OF FIGHTING, I got my car fixed!!

Geicos rates are higher, on average; their service is well below average.

I hope Geico sends you job to INDIA, then you will see the company for the greedy crooks they are.

Also you WORK at geico, to me, thats a little biased.

Proud to be insured by Geico.... Then I married a younger man by 7 years!

AUTHOR: Deb - (U.S.A.)

I have been with Geico since 1994. They have NEVER raised my rates ever, even after someone did over 3800.00 worth of damage to my vehicle due to vandalism. Then I married a younger man by 7 years who was at the time 32 years old, you would think my rates would go up? Nope, t
he actually went down because we now had two vehicles on the policy. Then just recently bought a policy to protect our belongings here in our apartment. I just got a notice in the mail yesterday 7/17/04 that my policy total was decreasing again because we bought this policy.

Their customer service has been more than perfect. We have road side assistance, have had to use it, they were there in less than 15 min. My battery had died at my home, needed it jumped they came and off to work I went. We also have the rental car addition. When my car was in the shop, the paid for my rental car for all 8 or 10 days I don't remember how many days it was in the shop for, but no problems. We love Geico and would never think of going anywhere else.

Hard to believe Their number one focus has always been providing exceptional customer service

AUTHOR: Melissa - (U.S.A.)

I have been employed with GEICO for almost 7 years. Their number one focus has always been providing exceptional customer service. In my personal and professional dealings with other insurance companies (especially the larger ones) it has been my experience that this is NOT the norm in this business.

In addition, it is required that we always act with uncompromising integrity. As a result, I take personal offense when someone makes accusations that GEICO is a bad company. Are we perfect? Of course not...but we strive to always do our best and if an error is caught it is quickly corrected.

When someone has been in an accident we are generally able to set them up for an inspection within 24 hours; however, there are times when inspection sites are booked (especially over the weekend), or the times available are not convenient for the customer. Given the location of the above person (Woodbridge, VA) it is extremely hard to believe that there were no appointments earlier than when he was saying.

In addition, his being upset at getting the manager's voice mail is strange since, like most companies, the manager is attending meetings or out on the floor managing the department. However, unlike many other companies, had a voice mail been left it WOULD have been returned.

Compared to our competitors GEICO offers the best customer service, the best hours when it comes to reporting and servicing your claim, and we are extremely efficient at the quick settling of claims. I can almost guarantee that had the above person decided to file through their own insurance company, there would have been even longer delays.

(p.s. In regards to some of the other negative comments- As the GEICO underwriter pointed out we do offer Accident Forgiveness for tenured policy holders and there are always discounts available. In addition, we occasionally file with a state for a rate decrease which could in turn lower your rates even if there had been an accident. And for the person who was cancelled after 15 years for 5 "minor" incidents-there is definitely something that they are not sharing. GEICO does not just "drop" policy holders and definitely not for "minor" incidents that span a number of years.)

Geico not fair to me until i complained and spoke to ... a chain of persons on the other end of the phone. Customer Service Run-around

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Most saying they could do nothing. I was hit by a geico driver, rear ended. Although HE was a nice guy the insurance has been a pain. First I was planning on moving July 26th and am trying to sell my car before then.

At first they tell me the soonest I can get my car looked at is the 19th!!! just to be LOOKED at... then i call back and say this jsut wont work, i paid to have ads in the paper and no one is going to buy or look at a car thats now been rearend.... i go through one manager wh owas a lame duck and did nothing but say he was sorry... (daniel dromin) i was quite frustrated, I finally called back and spoke to ANOTHER customer service lady (chatevia) who was very nice and just "happened" to find me an appointment at 3;30 this afternoon in Chevy Chase MD, i told the ealier person i was willing to drive to get the car looked at but they were so thick headed they didn;t understand to check surrounding areas for appointments.

Anyway I called the manager of the manager (Pual fledmann, manager of Daniel) at 1-800-582-8114 x 6853. and of course got their Voice mail.
in my opinion geico doesn't give a flyin CRAP if your not one of theirs and most of they managers are worthless... they didn;t help me.

Rates can go down even with an accident

AUTHOR: Chris - (U.S.A.)

I am an underwriter with GEICO. Your rates can come down even if you have an accident. It depends on the amount of damage. Some accidents are forgiven. GEICO wants to give you the best rate. Sometimes rates go up due to healthcare inflation or the cost of parts going up or because some people make fraudulent claims!!

Sometimes it takes a phone call to GEICO after you have been with them for awhile and you ask if you can get a better rate. We have 5 million policyholders! It is hard to get to all of them each renewal to see if they qualify for a better rate.

I look at aprox 80+ policies a day. I can assure you there are some policyholders out there with great rates.

With 5 million policyholders, we must be doing something right!

Best Insurance Company =Gieco

AUTHOR: Elizabeth - ()

I have been with Gieco for 7 years. In 2001(June), somone backed into me at the Postoffice..Geico paid the claim 950.00, then on
Feb 18th of this year, I had a major accident with a deer, slidding off the road, down and embankment in the Southern Tier(WNY) damage to vech was 1800.00 Medical bills over 5000.00
I have renewed my policy, and just as in years past I have been paying 698.00 per year. They have been wonderful. I have an accident( not my fault) the check is there for damages..I love this company. My policy has never gone up.
I really don't understand why all the negative reports.Compared to others, big named insurance Companies, they are effective, and close fast on a claim. So what is the beef?

Geico is not is not fair

AUTHOR: John W - ()

I always thought Geico was a good company until they dropped my insurance yesterday. I was with the company for fifteen years. All those who think Geico is so wonderful will not think so when it suddenly does something like that to them. The reason for this is because of five incidents. None of this incidents were major.

Rates can be lowered

AUTHOR: Matt - ()

Hate to break it to you, but insurance rates can be lowered on a renewal. Ever heard of good driver discount? Age discount? There are many more of these discounts that insurance companies offer at various times.

Why is it that anyone who defends a company here is immediately shot down as an 'insider' or company man? I also use Geico, I don't work for them, and they have given me GREAT service and extremely low rates. Oh, and my rates have gotten LOWER over the years because I hit milestone ages (ie 25, 30). I pay about $425 per YEAR for liability on a '92 Explorer. GREAT deal.

The original complaint here is non-sensical, has no specifics, and generally sounds like it was written by someone who has no clue. I highly suggest GEICO for car insurance.

Michael, ..What planet do you live on?

The only way your rate would go down is if you downgraded your policy in some way. All insurance companies raise your rates when a renewal comes up after you had ANY TYPE OF CLAIM, except when you have full glass coverage on a comprehensive insurance policy your rate would not be affected. The person who wrote this Consumer Comment I would guess works for the insurance company or has nothing else better to do with their time.

My Side of Geico

AUTHOR: Michael - ()

I have been insured by Geico for almost 5 years. In 2000 I filed 3 claims with Geico. Febuary 2000, hail storm over $1000 damage to my truck. Check came in about 3 days. In May of 2000, Mother's Day, rear-ended by an unisured motorist driving while intoxicated. Had my truck back in the road in 30 days, my cost $250m the deductable. November 2000 my wife pulls in front of another drive, back bumpers clip. Geico payed all damages the other vehicle (a scuf on the bumper, my truck had no damage). When they RENEWED my policy in March my rates went DOWN. If someone is having problems with Geico I would like to hear 'The rest of the story.'
