My wife and I were working on putting up our Christmas lights and two young men approached us saying they were opening a carpet cleaning store intown and were going around offering free cleaning in exchanage for word of mouth advertising. The deal was they would clean one high traffic area and would only be 30 minutes or so. Had I not been distracted with what I was doing I would have said no, but I asked my wife to take them in and start, an hour later thay still hadn't started cleaning and were explaing the vacuum system they were using. The salesman finally said it was a Kirby Vacuum demonstration, several times during the next few hours I tried sugesting we didn't have time for this but the salesman insisted it would only take a few minutes more.
Long story short we ended up paying $1200 after talking him down from $4000, because he wouldn't take "NO Thank You" for an answer. I've been kicking myself since. I think our decision was made mainly just to end the demo and get them out of our home. Unfortunatly due to the holidays and not being home much to try out the vacuum we didn't come to the conclusion we didn't want it in time to cancel it in the 3 days time frame. By the way, 3 days to canel in writing mailed to them per the contract. Please, most mail takes 2 days to get anywhere. So unless you type out your cancellation on the day after you sign the contract and mail it you will never get it to them in time and they are banking on it.
I think the vacuum we got actually works too good, but it is very heavy and we have 4 flights of stars in our home. My wife has trouble lugging it up and down all the stairs, and she showed me several spots in 3 different rooms where the vacuum is fraying the carpet. I called GPD yesterday to explain about the vacuum damaging our carpet and being too heavy for my wife, and was told repetedly we had 3 days to cancel and there was nothing they could do. I let the rep I was talking to know, very calmly, I understood we missed the 3 days and had a legal contract. That wasn't my point, I asked the lady if there was anything we could do to even maybe pro-rate our contract and buy us out or just return it as we haven't even made a payment yet. I was told again there was nothing they could do.
But she took my name and phone number and I was promised she would run my problem by management and they would get back to me. No call back as promised, but I started looking around online and was dismayed and shocked by the amount of people with very similar or worse stories as ours. One gentleman suggested a class action suite, I would be very interested in that. It is completely unbelievable we allowed ourselves to be pushed into this situation, but it is ridiculous companies in this day are still resorting to these tactics to push their products. We just want to return the vacuum, that we've only used 3 times and is already damaging our carpet.
