On Feb 4, 2013 I signed on with GreatWide Truckload Management Dallas Mavis division, as a Owner Operator which offered no forced dispatch, regional loads and $2,000 per week net. I have had my CDL since 1987, but purchased my own truck in August 2012.

After 4+ weeks of speaking with Greg from Greatwide safety & Lyle from Network 1 dispatch services for Greatwide regarding my past experiences with other deadend companies offering high Net income but no loads to support the earnings.

Feb 4, 2012 I ran from Ocala, Fl to Atlanta, GA to Indiana, to Maryland to PA in the first 4 days, the dispatch with Network 1 which dispatches for Greatwide after repeated requests by phone & text to send me the load info on miles, load rate, FSC(fuel surcharge), etc. After 7 loads ran in 14 days I was only given 1 out of 7 loads with all load details.

The first settlement payment came the following week for $243.00 net on the first 4 loads, which leads me to believe  the dispatcher was embarrassed to give the poor load rates, miles, info to me so I wouldn't turn down the load.

And this after running in the Northeast region which I specifically requested not to run due to weather, traffic, tolls. During the first week the Network 1 dispatcher told me of several loads paying $4,500 going to the Midwest region and no loads came through.

The second full week of running from PA to AL, to LA, to VA then to Miami for my final load in 14 days. I took 3.5 days off and planned on returning that Thursday only if I received the load info requested, which the final insult came in the form of a "Charity Load" Miami to South Carolina for 633 miles @ $1.00 per mile gross - $.075 to the truck...

After calculating the miles, rate, fuel it came up to me taking a $600.00+ loss  - I came to him by knowing where do I(owner operator) makes a penny on this run? Well, he asked how much would I like to make? Enough not to pay to run the load, after which I decided that was enough, Greatwide was contacted for me to return the rental dry van, and cut all ties.

After returning the trailer to Lakeland the following Monday, the drama continues. My last settlement is being held in escrow for 45 days pending any additional charges after I have been not ran any loads for 3 weeks under Greatwide.

I have never had a company hold a final pay check which was paid to my Comchek fuel card then voided and held in escrow. I declined all insurance offered regarding the tractor as I have my own with above the average coverage.

In closing, I recommend driving for smaller fleet companies as a Owner Operator & as a company driver. The large companies are after "Volume" on loads which in most cases hurts the driver but makes money only for the company &  broker. Smaller companies know your name, work harder to book higher paying loads and understand the driver is what keeps the company alive.

Greatwide Dallas Mavis has put itself in the same boat of forgetting who provides effort to get loads picked up & delivered. And it shouldn't cost the O/O to run the load. The first solution to this problem would be to get rid of Network 1 dispatch service in Michigan.  Check out the comments on FaceBook regarding how some drivers are feeling across the country.

Good Luck and spread the word.
