I am writing this to allow anyone who may be interested in moving to GTE Federal Credit Union a chance to change their mind.  I have been with them for years because they were giving us (those in my company) access to their paychecks early.  Now I want to say first of all, that this is for those of us "real" people who work hard but still live paycheck to paycheck.  6 years with the same employer and not one raise in 5 years and this is government work.  Well, they are not anything special.  GTE doesn't have any of the "fun" stuff like other banks like kids accounts, etc so that is the only reason I was using them.  One day we get a notice that they are no longer giving us our checks early, we now have to wait.  Ok, so I went and opened another account at a "fun" bank where I now get Sky Miles so atleast maybe once a year I can accumulate a free ticket somewhere-hey better than nothing!

Well, so of course it's time to pay the rent and I submit my check to my landlord with the word "rent" written in the memo line like I always do and notice that they day of my actual payday, that these people "rejected" my rent check, of course they collected their $29 fee.  Now, my thing is--yes, they changed their policy, they could have collected their $29 fee, but to send my rent check packing afterwards instead of paying it like they usually do and leave you negative (they know my paycheck is direct deposited and before the policy change, the money would have been there early.  Now, I have a bounced rent check for the first time in my life, so embarrassing because the office staff are like friends to me, because I have been here almost 2 years this hasn't happened before and now I have to pay $125 late fee and another $25 fee to them.

I called the bank and they couldn't even tell me if they were going to put it through again.  I told them I have daily late fees, I can't just sit here and not pay my rent while today they will come and put the eviction notice on my door.  I just hate these people, they know when I get my direct deposits, they haven't ever done anything for me before and they couldn't just have paid it.

I'm also reporting what they have done in the past and hopefully others will start paying attention to the online banking because you can catch them doing things.  Such as, over the last year twice they have put my direct deposit through, you can see my balance is $1000.00+ but if you go back later you will see NSF charges and the online banking has been modified where they will go back and put stuff as if they came in *before* your direct deposit.  Now, those two times I called and they reversed the fees but honestly I can't help but wonder how many people they do this to.  How is this the way to treat your customers.  It's honestly like someone walks up to you at the ATM and takes $29 and runs.  It's exactly the same thing.  Banks should help their customers, not try and hurt them because the economy is bad and they need money.  Honestly I can't wait to drive by there one day and see the place shut down.  I am a single mom, divorced, with 2 small children doing it on my own and have no help and really can't imagine how anyone could do this.  Taking food from my children.

You didnt change banks fast enough, well good riddance to them anyway.

Heres what you couldve done to avoid them overdraft charges-

Whenever you expect things to come thru, and you dont have the funds in the acct, simply go to the atm machine at night, enter your card and pin, then tell it you want to make a deposit.  Then when it asks how much, just type in however much you need to cover all the crap that is gonna come thru.  Now heres the really fun part-  When it gives you the envelope to put your deposit in, simply "forget" to put any cash in the envelope!  Now you have funds for a few days until the retards at the bank realize the envelope was empty!  Hopefully by this time the bank will have cleared your real funds.

I used to do this alot in my college days and it saved me from ALOT of overdraft fees!  If the bank gives you any hassle, you have the option of saying "oh gee I mustve forgot!" or my favorite-accuse bank employees of theft!  They will have to launch an investigation and you will get FREE MONEY!

Now your probably still upset about the way this soon to be former bank did you, BUT you can still get a good laff out of it yet!  Go to THEIR deposit box at night, bag of feces in hand, and make your deposit! Even better and NASTIER, open up the slot, then just dump the feces in, straight out of the bag!  Now whenever you start feeling bitter about the way the credit union did ya, simply reflect back on your "dirty deed" and imagine them bank peeons trying to clean up all that feces out of all the intricacies of the night deposit box!  PRICELESS!

Rent?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, May 06, 2011

So is "rent" the magic word that tells the bank you want them to cash it instead of returning it if there are not enough funds available?

Your Checking Account is NOT a line of credit.  If you don't have enough money available in your account they don't have to pay it.  It sounds like you have done this in the past, and they are probably getting tired of people who treat it as a line of credit.  If you want a line of credit then open up a credit card and link it to your checking account as Overdraft Protection.

Everything else you wrote is "fluff" and has nothing to do with you trying to pass what is in effect a bad check.  Yes intentionally writing a check when you know the money is not in the account is fraud.

There are other divorced single moms with 2 or more kids living paycheck to paycheck and they don't do this.  There are others who haven't had a raise in 5 years and don't need to do this.

NOT a Rip Off

If your direct deposit comes in later and you write a check knowing no money is there---well then there's always policies that will charge you fees.  The government made banks change their policies which you were notified in writing to have to approve if you were to be charged NSF to make the checks good.  If you write a lot of checks it's good to link a savings or credit card to your account as a back up funding source.

Now I am confused

You bank at and work for GTE Federal Credit Union or you are a Federal civil service employee??

Who is denying you "early" access to your money? I have had direct deposit for several years working for different companies. The credit union has no say over when the money is released to you. Your employer (or the payroll system your employer uses) releases the money to the bank or credit union.

I have had my pay credited to my account on payday (or if payday falls on a holiday the Friday or day before payday). I have also had my pay available a day before payday.

Talk to your employer about your financial problems. The credit union just makes the money available when your company releases it to them.

Not a rip off

AUTHOR: coast - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, May 06, 2011

You claim you were ripped off by the credit union because they penalized you for writing a bad check. You haven't had a raise in 5 years, so you blame the credit union. That is totally irrational thinking.
