I just got caught in the following scam on I-75 N just outside of Tampa 8:56 am on a busy Monday Morning. I was returning to SC after a visit to Sarasota. Traffic was very heavy and up ahead were 6 cops flashing lights (must of been a slow crime day in Tampa). I slowed downed roughly 15 mph and cruised on by as I stated traffic was heavy for a Monday morning commute. Immediately the lead 2 cops came after me and pulled me over. I pulled over and was asked by the officer if I knew why I was being stopped? I responded no. I was informed that I had failed to move over for emergency vehicles even though there was no emergency and even though traffic was very heavy. The second cop stormed out after the first poor soul who passed us and scammed him. I was witness to all 6 officers pulling over people within a 100 yard stretch of Highway during the busiest time of the commute. I counted 77 cars pass me on the inside lane while I was getting scammed for $153. In my opinion this tactic poses a greater risk to the public with cops bolting in and out of traffic during heavy traffic periods in a blatant attempt to scam the commuters. The result of this is that the jurisdiction got my $153 but I will NEVER visit Florida again. I spent roughly $2000 in Florida that week and the $153 I was scammed for will be the last Florida gets from me. It is these so called officers job to protect and serve, but who exactly were they serving that day? 6 officers on a busy stretch of highway during rush hour traffic scamming the innocent populace. I will tell everyone I know to also avoid Florida. I will send this message to any politician I can find from Florida. I will email every travel agency I can find and any TV/Radio shows I can find. Nice job Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department. I would be real curious to know how many serious crimes took place in your jurisdiction while 6 officer's were scamming the innocent.

The ever changing excuse

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

So now it is a case of there was too much heavy traffic for you to move over.  If according to you there was no emergency and you shouldn't have to move over, why would that matter and why would you even bring that up as an excuse?

I could not get over as traffic was heavy and I stated I reduced speed as quickly as possible. It is a scam. Way to go Florida.

You really don't get it (or just don't want to).

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

" There was no emergency so there was no need to move over.  "

Do you really think that you get to decide whether or not there is an emergency?    That's really beside the point because the law mandates that you move over when you see the lights flashing.   It's fairly simple and even people from SC should be able to grasp that.

I think you're making excuses to try and deflect attention from the core issue, which is that you observed many vehicles with flashing emergency lights and chose not to move over.   If that is too difficult for you to figure out, I'm sure that the state of Florida will be overjoyed that you have voluntarily made their highways safer by removing yourself from them.

STILL Making Up Excuses!

AUTHOR: Jim - (USA)

The law is designed to protect people!  It is NOT up to YOU, me or any other driver to decide if an "emergency" exists on the side of the road.  The law states if you see emergency type vehicles on the side of the road WITH LIGHTS FLASHING, your duty on a multilane highway is to MOVE OVER when it is safe to do so.  If you cannot move over, then you must slow down to twenty miles per hour under the posted speed limit.  Lets see, for you to have done either would have delayed you about five seconds, right?  How terrible!

You now say there was NO emergency, but....

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

"Traffic was very heavy and up ahead were 6 cops flashing lights."

The "flashing lights" are there to tell you that there IS some sort of trouble...YOU ignored that...live with it.

I have to pack a bag for my road trip to Florida.

Just a scam.

AUTHOR: Scammed Citizen - (United States of America)

There was no emergency so there was no need to move over. As I stated traffic was very heavy on I-75 at 8:56 am on a Monday morning so the true danger was the cops creating a potential danger. I wont get over it I am spreading it around every where I can find an outlet. This is a scam perpetrated on the public by an over reaching government.

Call it what you will this is a scam.

AUTHOR: Scammed Citizen - (United States of America)

The law is to move for emergency vehicles WHEN THERE IS AN EMERGENCY! Just sitting by the side of the road raping the public is criminal.

Here's a link to the reasons for the Florida law...

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

(((link redacted)))

It says, in part, that the law was enacted to protect emergency providers and the ones they are aiding. Many have been injured and killed by failure to heed its guidelines. Looks like YOU were one of the ones failing to heed.....get over it.

And The Wailing Just Keeps On Coming

AUTHOR: Jim - (USA)

The signs CLEARLY read to move over for any emergency vehicle. The signs are as obvious as the sunrise. YOU failed to do that and so did the others. You and the others are hardly innocent. Next time pay attention to your driving and the signs. Wail all you want and blame the cops all you want but YOU were the driver and YOU did disregard the sign.
