In short : HUGHESNET = RIPOFF
Do not buy./join/get this service trough this lousy company and screw up your life ...unless you have machete wielding men running after you, even then, RECONSIDER !!

The HUGHESNET is after people that do not have choice, they know that If you live on country side, you don't have much choice regarding the internet connection, I mean anything faster that dial-up. In my case the alternative is moving back to area where they have multiple service, DSL, cable, WI-FI and so on.

Back in September, 2007, They advertised:$59.99 a month plus 400.00 for antenna and mode with instant $100.00 rebate. Called to see why they continued to charge me 20.00 extra for the equipment they said, I have to pay $400.00, when I tried to explain what was the deal, they said I have not filled/send request for $100.00 rebate.

Fair Access Policy
Many other internet companies are imposing similar measures but with more fair downloads limits 5GB or so this company set the download limit to 200mb for $59.99 and 450MB or so for $89.99 service. These days auto update for Windows OS takes 4 times more. Their solution is: repeated over and over and over trough the Indian speaking customer service. Go to Google and download "Download manager" where you can set the download time between 2AM and 7 AM EST when they do not have restrictions.

It is insane, these days to deal with such arrogant company management. They are still in business. How? We are stupid customers!

Once more do not GET THIS SERVICE, you'll live happier life, save money and nerves.

I forgot to mention how poor connection really is. The speed never, NEVER reaches advertised speed, far FAR away from advertised. Most of the time the download speed is around 15-20kbit/s which is 3-4 times of dial-up connection. Upload: this is around 3-10kbit/s.

Trying to use the internet between 7PM-10PM is practically impossible. It is crawling slow. This is the complete rip-off. Any settlement class action out there, count on me. Outrageous. You want to see monopoly in action and real life then try HughesNet. NO NO do not even think about to try it, there were hundreds of us tried, BAD very BAD taste!!! Learn from someone else mistakes!!! It'll cost you less and you'll have happier life.
