Several months ago, my husband was contacted by Cambece regarding a debt he had. We had been making payments to the company where he had the original debt and Cambece notified us that they had the account now and to start making the payments to them. I spoke with them and asked if there was a minimum payment that needed to be made every month since we hadn't received an actual bill from them. They stated to me then that the payments that I had been making were just fine as long as I kept a steady payment schedule going there should be no problems. I was making regular payments ranging from $150-$250 a month for quite sometime when we receive another notice from them stating that since we have decided to ignore this matter they would do what they need to do to recover the debt.

Well, that didn't sit well with me since I personally was the one making regular monthly payments to them. I called immediately and spoke with someone regarding this letter. When asked why they would say that I was ignoring this, he couldn't answer me. I then said that the last person I spoke with said the monthly payments I was making was fine just to continue, he stated, and not very politely, that they don't accept monthly payments, this has to be paid in full. He then offered a settlement of $1400 to clear this up. I then asked to speak with his supervisor who was also very rude. She went offered me a settlement also of $2000 paid in full. I laughed at this and said that the last person stated $1400 and now she is saying $600 more?

This supervisor kept pressuring me to contact family and friends and borrow this money to pay off the debt. I refused, of course. I told her that she will receive monthly payments like I had been doing and if they don't accept then that is fine with me.

This person went on to say that the monthly payments were going towards the principal balance, which to my understanding, the original principal balance was just over $2000. According to her, this account now gains $1000 a month INTEREST!!! I was told then that this account has an outstanding balance of $2700 yet she also told me that I have already paid $2500 towards this account.

This is a never ending cycle and I am tired of the ride. No more for these people, they are not out to "help" anyone, they can't keep an offer from one person to the next and they lack customer service skills. How can this be legal? Original balance of $2500 (ballpark figure) and according to them I have already paid that much but there is still a balance of $2700?

Thank you for the insight, And yes I wised up and don't speak to them AT ALL.. They never had my home phone number due to we had it changed last year due to we were getting 3-4 calls daily from collectors. And it's been since March of this year when I finally had my Cell phone number changed, so I figure that is why they are calling my Ex-husband in FL to try and get a phone number out of him. Luckily my Ex-husband and I haven't spoke to each other since our divoce 10 yrs ago. Cambece Law firm is trying thier best to get some type of phone number to contact me...HaHa

There is no law stating the minimum amount for a company to file a lawsuit. Working in a collection agency, I have seen credit bureaus reports where people have been sued for as little as $500, and up. Generally though, I think the unwritten rule (as told by my supervisor)is $1000 minimum. Although there is nothing stopping them from suing for less.

Jenise...This is why you NEVER speak to ANY collector!!...ESPECIALLY Cambece!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

This is rule #1! NEVER speak to ANY collector! There is no reason for conversation. If they could actually do anything to you they would not need to talk to you. They would just sue you.

Rule #2: NEVER pay any 3rd party collector/debt buyer! Never make an agreement to pay anything.

Rule #3: Always DEMAND everything in writing. Did you notice the key word here? DEMAND.

Rule #4: The collector is NOT your friend, and can NEVER be trusted. They will outright lie to you to get your money, and they will make unauthorized charges to any bank accounts you give them access to.

Rule #5: NEVER give ANY collector ANY personal information like DOB,SS#, home adress, work info, etc..NOTHING they don't have already.

Rule #6: Never listen to any threats they make, like garnishment, jail, etc.. These are empty threats and are also illegal. Your wages, IF garnished can only be a percentage of your DISPOSABLE income as set by your state laws. Usually with a person who could not pay bills anyway, this is next to nothing.

Cambece is one of the biggest scumbags out there. I doubt that this incompetent moron could even find his way into the courtroom.

Cut off all communications IMMEDIATELY!

Good luck!

JA Cambece Law Firm is breaking the law!

AUTHOR: Jenise - (U.S.A.)

My husband and I couple years ago could barely pay our bills let alone put food on the table. We ate cereral and peanut butter and hotdogs for almost a year. We had 2 credit cards debts that we got way behind on and I owed over $15,000 total to our 2 credit card companies. One for 10,000.00 which Law firm (not Cambece) took over went out and took judgement against us to take us to court to garnish our wages for the money I owed.

In contacting them we came to an agreement for a pay off settlement amount of $8,000 as pay off. So, we went to the bank and got a 2nd Mortgage against our home to pay them off both credit cards debts. After pay the 8,000.00 settlement one that left us with 2,500.00 to pay off the other one which we owed 4,000.00 to, which use to be Chase Manhattan bank. Which sold our debt to some god awful collector who I would harrassed me to no end about me giving them my checking account number so they could do an auto draft for monthly payments, in which I refused and told them like 100 times to send me in writing a settlement letter for a payoff amount and I offered them the 2,500.00 as pay off.

They told me to keep my money and hung up on me. They would accept anything less the 5,000.00 Now where in the heck did that other 1,000.00 come from? Anyway after that I didn't here from that Collector for months then this JA Cambece starting calling me, demanding the same thing. And I made the statement to them.

SEND ME A SETTLEMENT LETTER FOR PAY OFF AMOUNT IN WRITNG. They won't do it. The men that work at Cambece are the worst, they try to put you down. And make you feel worthless. And since I live in the South they called me a stupid Hillbilly.

Well that just makes me Madder. So, everytime the called me I would just start yelling at them and talk over them and I would repeat the same thing IT"S the 2,500.00 or nothing! Take it or leave it or take me to COURT! See I was told by my bank V.P. of Loan debt who is also a Christan man, that NO credit card company or debt collector can take you to court for a debt under $6,00.00. Not sure if it is the Law or it's not worth their time.

Anyway Cambece law firm kept calling me and harrassing me. They have even called my ex-husband in another state, which I am furious about. So if anyone decides to take JA Cambece to court and to sue the for breaking the law under the consumer affairs credit act. Please let me know cause I will go with you.

They can threaten all they want...

AUTHOR: Tina - (U.S.A.)

I am not going to live by their threats anymore. I have had enough from them. I don't mind paying this debt but they aren't willing to work with me or anyone else that has filed a report here so they aren't getting anymore of my hard earned money.

I have told my husband not to pay them anymore and had him look at some of these reports. He stated that every report here sounds exactly like his dealings with them. I wouldn't allow my son to bend to a bully at school so I am not going to bend and buckle from their pressure. I am going to send them a letter stating that this debt is under investigation and I need a complete account of all activity since they acquired this account, all payments, balances, interest, etc. They will hear the same thing if they call again.

They haven't called since the last phone call but that will change soon, I am sure. They are free to try to threaten me all they want but after reading these reports here, I see that they have a habit of treating ppl like this. Well, they are in for a shock cuz I can be just as mean and rude as they are.

If more ppl start challenging them, maybe things will change. The typical bully doesn't want to pick on someone who will defend themselves and stand up to them. They want someone that they can overpower... don't let them overpower you. These ppl aren't going to be nice to you, they aren't going to work with you, they don't sympathize with your situation... they want your money, even if it means making your kids go hungry, they don't care about you, only your money. Don't buy into their threats. They will eventually decide you are too much trouble and move on to another weaker victim.

I wish you all the best with your problems and dealings with these ppl. They have gotten enough money from me already, they can do whatever they need to do before they get anymore. I encourage them to take this to court. I promise you, tho, if anything about their business and practice is a bit shady, they won't want a court or attorneys looking at their records. Just something to keep in mind... like many others said in other reports, if the original debt was worth suing you over, you would have already been sued. Take care

i wish i would have found this website before making any arrangements with them at all, but like i said that was well over a year ago and i've already had my creditors meeting for my bankruptcy and they weren't there so i'm no longer worried about it. our lawyer asked us if there was any debt that should be at the top of their list to include and we said that debt.

it was a valid debt, it was a repossesion, none the less one we hadn't heard about in over a year at the time that cambece contacted me. and actually, the funny thing was was that it was never on my credit report for having a repossession and my credit score was actually higher than my husbands because it wasn't on there. i don't know why they called me at work, i'm not sure why they didn't contact my husband instead of me. they didn't try to contact my parents or his (but both of their numbers had changed) i gave him an incorrect cell number for me and they still got my number. how? i never called themfrom it, i wasn't that stupid i know how they trace. my number isn't listed in a regular 411 directory and they didn't have my landlords name because she didn't check our credit.

An even better idea.

AUTHOR: Tom - (U.S.A.)

I am not a lawyer,I can't give legal advice and I don't know the specifics of this case but here is an idea you can use if you feel it is appropriate.

You could write them a letter that says:

Upon review of this matter I have concluded that any money that you have received related to this matter was as the result of duress and misrepresentation by you and your employees and not as a result of any true debt or obligation. Therefore I request that you immediately return all money that you have received or that you send me a full and complete explanation of your claim including all details and supporting documentation. You are hereby informed that you are not authorized to debit any account of mine.I also request that you only contact me by mail and in no other way.

This would establish your dispute and nullify the effect of any payments.

Then I would notify any bank that you have used to pay Cambece, that Cambece or any of their representatives are specifically not authorized to receive any money in any way and that the bank is not authorized to pay them anything.

You may even want to close down any account that you have used to pay them because they could still auto-debit that account with the information that they have.If you have used a credit card you could report it lost or stolen but then you wouldn't be able to use that account for about 5 days until you received your new card in the mail.

These guy want you to believe that they can seize your bank accounts, garnish your wages or even have you arrested but they can't do any of that. These guys do this all day every day;it's all they think about. They've gotten real good at sounding tough and scary but it's all B.S and they know it.

If they want anything they have to file suit and then win.Only then can they petition the court for money. And then they could only get about 50 to 100 dollars per month at best. And while the process is ongoing you don't have to pay them anything. That would give you at least 6 months of no payments. The chance of them actually winning is near zero for a properly opposed claim.

The truth is that they probably truly do not have a proper valid legal claim.

Make them prove it.

Good luck.

#8 Consumer Suggestion

This is exactly why you NEVER pay a third party debt collector!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

For Jennifer and Tina,

These lowlife prey on those who do not know the law and/or their rights. They know they cannot collect any other way. These parasites are absolutely powerless. They can't do anything to you and they rarely sue anyone. You cannot be arrested for bad debt, and they cannot garnish your wages or take your property, etc.. These are all empty threats, that in themselves are illegal.

Here is the problem now. By making a payment and/or an agreement to pay, you have legally re-affirmed the debt, which means now they actually can sue you for it and win, and get a garnishment.

You restarted the statute of limitations for collections and restarted the 7 year negative reporting. Thats right, NEGATIVE reporting. It will show as a paid collection for 7 more years.

Paying an old collection account actually hurts your credit more than just letting it go.

The basic rules are to NEVER speak to any collector on the phone. NEVER! Always demand that everything be in writing. And never pay any third party debt collector, or debt buyer. Always just cut off all contact with them, most will just go away, and only a very small percentage will ever sue. Most debt collector lawyers are idiots, and that is wht they are doing collections instead of real legal representation.

Cambece is a JUNK debt buyer who buys these old, uncollectable debts for far less than a penny on the dollar.

These guys act like they have unlimited powers but it's all smoke and mirrors

AUTHOR: Tom - (U.S.A.)

Check out Cambece at www.Budhibbs.com under collection agencies to avoid. I would not pay these jerks anything ever again.Send them a letter stating that you do not owe them any money and that if they think that you do they will have to send you a full and complete explanation including all details and documentation of why they think that you owe them anything.

Also request that they only contact you by mail and not in any other way. What they do is only legal because they get people to agree to it.Stop agreeing to their nonsense. These guys are bullys and thugs. The more you pay them, the more money they have to continue to abuse other people.Don't send them another penny,Nothing! Make them prove that you owe them anything. They probably do not have a valid legal claim.

Make them take you to court. They won't do it if they know you would oppose them in court because they know that they could not win.Today is the last day you allow them to treat you like a patsy.Today you take charge and take back control of your life.

These guys act like they have unlimited powers but it's all smoke and mirrors. They don't have anything but the ability to sound real scary. When you stand up to them they always back down. The only people they are out to help is themselves. They're like Great White sharks, all they do is hunt, eat and reproduce. When they see a consumer, their eyes roll back in their heads and they start chomping.

Good luck and keep us updated.

i hate these peopl

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

i have dealt with the a**holes before and i can't stand them at all! the first time i had any contact with them was last year in march. they called me at work and demanded that i pay them 7,000 right then and there and said i needed to come up with the money at that moment or there would be a lawsuit.

well, i got upset and started crying because i didn't know what we could do. so they were "nice" enough to work something out with me. YEAH RIGHT they said if i could come up with 700.00 within the next two weeks then then i could make monthly payment of 300.

i said fine, i paid them this money for several months and one time they put the ach draft through too early (3 days too early) and it bounced and they were threating me with a warrant and what have you.

well, i got it taken care of that day because it wasn't my fault they put it through early i wasn't expecting it then and we didn't get paid until that friday and they put it through on a tuesday.

it got to the point were we would make the payments to them, but had barley enough money to get groceries after paying rent and utilities. so we went and filed chpt. 7 because there just wasn't any other option for us.

we were well under the median income level for indiana (family of 5 70,000) and they still kept calling and was pissed because we filed the chpt. 7 they left us with no option, we couldn't afford our other montly bills and feed our family too.

and before anyone comments on the whole cpt 7 thing, we realized we were in too deep when my husband got out of the military and couldn't find a job other than a measley 8.00/ hr job that was too far away. he made more money on unemployment than working there he has a great job now, and we are doing fine and no, we aren't getting ourselves back in where we were before
