Johnson Moving & Storage - United Van Lines johnsonstorage.com broke several items when they moved me. Their process is to pay a local person to come assess the damage they have done. Then, they pay this assessor to GLUE your items back together, if possible. If that is not possible, they try to order replacement parts to do the repair. These are the items they broke: two almost new steam cleaners; my like-new queen sleigh bed; lamp shade; solid wood bookshelf; large crock bowl; quilt rack. These items were supposed to be packed by them. Most were just thrown on the truck. They are supposed to itemize and number every item they put on the truck. However, it is impossible to accurately list everything because they have 5-10 movers carrying your things to the truck at one time and they expect the OWNER to do the inventory. The guys dropped my items as they removed them from the truck. They did not pack the steamers, and, when they dropped them off the truck, the bottom plastic on the steamers were shattered. These parts could not be replaced. The assessor glued my grandfather's priceless vintage solid wood bookshelf back together and called it good. My sleigh bed was missing some of the wood and the assessor had to mold parts from a putty-like substance to stain it. The bed had deep scratches that had to be filled and covered as well. The quilt rack was beyond repair because they lost the large part that broke off. They packed the lamp shades and the large crock bowl which were shattered when I unpacked.
I provided a very conservative replacement cost on all items that were broken. They were to replace the few items that could not be repaired with glue or putty. I realized this was part of moving and I had to accept it. The ripoff came with the two like-new steam cleaners. Both were shattered and I could not find replacement parts (YES... I had to find them myself!) nor could I find anyone that would be willing to repair them! It would cost more to transport them over three hours away and pay for repairs (even if they could find the parts) than it would for them to pay their replacement value. So, they said they would pay for them. I put down the replacement cost for the two steam cleaners. They were mid-price-range steam cleaners. They ended up paying for the lamp shade, the cost of the crock bowl, the quilt rack, and one of the steam cleaners. They paid HALF of the other steam cleaner. I will never be able to replace it at that price.
I cannot replace the crock bowl, at the price they paid, because I purchased it in Marshall, Texas at Marshall Pottery.
I would warn you to not use Johnson Moving & Storage - Topeka OR United Van Lines. Their customer service is horrible. They are dishonest and unethical. They have no idea what their moving men are doing. The young man that was in charge was rude and short with us. He did not give us time to look at our items when he dropped them off. He hired men to move my things when the truck arrived. Young, inexperienced college guys moved my things. He was a day late and he had a young girlfriend along with him on the ride. She kept getting out of the truck and made it clear she was ready to leave.
