Keiser University is a complete RIPOFF! I should've known from the start but I was so excited as a first time college student I did not see the clues as they were presented. First, they contacted me--I thought it was odd but since I was working full-time and had a one-year-old at home I took the opportunity and seized it. My second clue should've been how quick and easy the enrollment process was. Within a week of my first phone call I was on campus for my appointment and had already submitted my payment for the enrolling... I know from this experience now that this is what they call SWINDLING--rushing you into agreeing to something before you even understand fully what you are agreeing to! This is where my third clue should've sent up red flags... as a first-time student at the age of 23 I had no help from my parents, or anyone for that matter, and was completing this whole process on my own. I kept trying to explain my financial situation to the people in the financial aide but they kept shrugging me off saying it was fine, they would take care of everything. Little did I know that's EXACTLY what they meant. I had absolutely no say in how the rest of my financial process was handled. All of my paperwork was done for me, loans were requested for me, financial aide, etc. and a payment plan for $70 a month was scheduled and all I had to do was sign next to the X. No one bothered to ask my permission, explain the process, NOTHING. I naively trusted these people with my credit and future who had no interest in mine. I wish I had realized it then, but it took me 18 months to realize the grave situation I had gotten myself into.

In case I hadn't mentioned, the four-week classes SEEM like a great idea at the time--busy life, short classes! Except if you are a student who genuinely enjoys learning, there is no conceivable way to absorb an entire book's worth of knowledge in only four weeks. I was reading upwards of 3-4 chapters a WEEK on top of the quizzes, assignments, essays, and discussions--all due WEEKLY. believe me, even after I quit my job to become a stay-at-home mom there was not enough time in a week without leaving me physically and emotionally drained. So at the end of 18 months I started wondering when I was start seeing some sort of proof of my progress. The only thing I ever received were some certicates of honor roll and attendance (I was enrolled online...) Eventually I called the school to find out where I was with my degree, etc. I was told I had used 100% of my federal student loans (both subsidized and unsubsidized) AND 100% of my financial aide (pell grants included) on top of the $70-80 a month I was still sending them. Where did this leave me? I could not pay for an entire semester out of pocket. Why hadn't I been notified of this? No one had bothered to keep me up to date on my financial situation. I did not know where my money was coming from let alone where it was going because "everything was taken care of." The financial aide office suggested that I take out a private loan for $7,000--on top of the $19,000 I already had--NO THANKS!!!! I decided that I would withdraw from the school and transfer to a community college here in Tennessee where I moved while attending Keiser. That was when the moment of surreality hit. ...I had already begun my class... Here I was, thinking that I was in the last class of the semester talking about the upcoming semester, but NO. after I hadn't responded to the ONE email they sent me to my school email address--not my personal email address--they gave up trying to contact me.

Therefore when I called to find out what the hell was going on, it was "my fault" for not contacting them sooner. I was LIVID!!!! Not only did I not have a degree, I now have a preposterous amount of loans considering, PLUS I now owe the school a WITHDRAWAL fee of over $1,500 for starting the class I was under the assumption was ALREADY PAID FOR! Then, to top it all off, I also owe them another $1,500 or so for the books that apparently were not covered with my financial aide the second year around. (All of my books were completely covered the first year I started.) My financial officer neglected to tell me my account was being charged for over SIX MONTHS... Now my transcripts are being held until I pay the school $3,673.88. Even if I start a payment plan of 12-months at $370 I will not be able to continue my education for OVER A YEAR!!! As a single mom working part-time I am not in a position to either wait, or pay that much a month. Oh, and the best part is that when I called Keiser about the problem, the first call I was laughed at, the second call I was dismissed, the third call I was directed to the main campus in Ft Lauderdale--numerous calls back and forth that nothing could be done--the fourth call I was told I had to re-enroll in order to use MY financial aide to cover the debt even though I would be forfeiting a semester of school, then te last call I finally caved in and said I would accept a referral for a private loan to get all this taken care of AND NO ONE BOTHERED TO CONTACT ME. I am SO over this school and their completely lack of professionalism and business ethics. The saddest part is that it takes DOZENS of employees to fulfill this corrupt state of business they are in. Is there no sense of morality in the world anymore?
