Went into the dealership to trade in my lease hyundai and purchase out right a new car. Was told to filll out an application afor credit and pick out a car. Did this and told them I wanted to go back thru hyundai credit since the car is thru them. Well they came back and said I needed to put down 3,000 dollars and pay 450 per month for a 17,000 car. I said NO WAY and then they told me to go home and wait on a call from them. After three weeks I am still waiting on a call but did get a notice from the credit companies that my credit had been checked 8 or 9 times thru differant companies and my fico score went down. I never gave them approval to run so many credit checks and after getting letters back from several of these companies was told they turned down the deals because of the amount they wanted them to finance. Well it turned out to be over 23,000 for a 17000 car. NO wonder but they never have called me and explained what happned. PLEASE do not let them run so many credit checks and be aware of the amount before doing so. The credit manage never did call or meet with me in person. Such a coward. NEVER will I deal with this company again. STAY AWAY......

So a rippoff, yes, but (and there is allways a butt) what happened is not quite what you think.

It is common to "Approve" a larger amount than the basic purchase, this is so the dealer can sell you extended warranty, service contract, gap insurance, accessories like running boards, mud flaps and general crap...... And add it to your financing.

It is also common to ask several lenders for approvals, for reputable dealers this is to ge the best financing deal for you or if a preffered lender won't approve get an approval from anybody to "Save The Deal"

So by trying for financing on such a large amount they screwed ouo out of your opportunity to get financing. Then the lenders all did a Hard pull on your credit and that made things worse.

At the end: you need to walk away and wait until your credit score recovers in 60 to 90 days then find a dealer that doesn't employ clowns in the finance department.

At least they didn't do a "spot delivery" and have to repo the car after they mucked up the financing.
