Received a call this morning from someone who announced themselves only as the "Litigation Department." Spoke to two different women – the first informed me that I had an outstanding loan with Advance America in the amount of $1,337.00, but was willing to settle the case for only $500.00. She provided me with a previous address and employer, both of which were over 15 years old. When I asked for the name of the company, she continued talking and explained that I had one opportunity to agree to pay the settlement, otherwise she would be informing Advance America that I was "uncooperative" and they would take me to court and charge me with fraud. She provided me with personal, albeit outdated, information such as references and addresses. When she put me on the phone with her supervisor, she asked for my debit card number, expiration, and the security code on the back. When I told her I needed to do more research she replied "fine do your research, and we will simply explain to the client that you were uncooperative." To this I replied, "I'll take my chances in court, this phone call is highly suspicious."

Why it is a scam:

- they had my updated phone number, but not my updated address

- would not provide the name of their company

- did not have the date of the loan

- no loans appear on my credit report matching this description

- beligerent, aggressive, demanding payment immediately

- used threats in order to instill a climate of panic

The number displayed as "unknown," however the recording asked me to call a number back with a 202 area code. Because I answered, I was not able to record the number.
