(HSS) arranges for installation of products purchased by customers of various retailers including Lumber Liquidators.  The HSS program is designed to ensure that all installers sent to the homes of its customers have been properly screened for any serious criminal convictions.  HSS performed background checks on Mr. Whiting as the principal of his company, and Mr. Whiting is required by contract with HSS to perform background checks on all his employees, subcontractors and representatives that visit a customer’s home.  In this instance, the process failed.  In order to minimize the chance that this could occur again, HSS is strengthening the process and regularity with which it audits compliance with the background check requirement.
