I went to Maaco to have them replace my chrome front bumper on my 04 Dodge Ram pickup that had a small 3 inch round dent in it from a little incedent I had camping. So they replaced it for $350.00 and everything was all right because I was living in Arizona where the climate is very dry and not much moisture.

So then about a year later I moved back up to Anchorage, Alaska with my Dodge in late July and within about a month my bumper had started to show major signs of rust. And yes, rust is a problem here with vehicles because of the harsh climate, but ussually only on vehicles that are at least 10 to 15 years old. Within 1 more month the chrome was flaking off and you could see rust spots all over it and it look terrible like it had came off a vehicle that was about 30 years old.

I went to the local Maaco here in Anchorage to see if I could be reimbursed or else get them to reinstall another bumper that was'nt going to rust, and he agreed that my bumper should not have been doing this, so he took pictures and sent them to the Maaco in Glendale, AZ where I had the bumper installed and a few weeks went by and they said that the 60 day warranty was up and there nothing that they would do for me.

So the only other thing I could do was to call the Maaco consumer affairs 800 number. So I described my situation with the lady on the phone and all she could tell me is that my 60 day warranty is expired so tough luck. So I tried to explain to her what this bumper really looked like and how everybody asks me "hey what the hell happened to your bumper". And that such a well known company that they are why would they want that kind of reputation.

So after arguing with the lady for a while she accually hung up on me. Ya HUNG UP ON ME. So I guess that I'm just f***ed. I guess that the only thing I can do is just stick it out with this crappy, rusted out bumper and everybody that asks me about it, and yes a lot of people do, I just tell them the story of my bumper and how Maaco blows and how much I hate Maaco and never, ever go there for anything.

The more people I tell the better I feel about it so I'm just gonna leave my rusty bumper on out of spite for Maaco and say the worst possible things about them. And yes people do stare at it driving on the road, in parking lots. It looks kinda funny seeing a truck that is only a couple years old with this bumper that looks like it came off a truck that was 40 years old sitting in a junkyard. And it is still getting worse and worse.

You would think that a major corporation like Maaco would take care of there costomers better and try to keep a halfway decent reputation. All they had to do is reimburse me $350.00, thats like pocket change to them, and I would just fine and wouldn't say the worst things I could about them. Ya know everybody makes mistakes with stuff, but I guess that they just don't care about their quality of worksmanship or there costumers. All they care about is the bang for a buck.

So I guess I just want to end this on this note alone..."Maaco Sucks".

So youre stuck in Anchorage with a rusty bumper on your '04 truck? All is not lost. I am a retired former Maaco franchise owner living in Ohio and I know about situations like the one you are in.

Your replacement chrome bumper is probably one of 2 types: an original OEM Chrysler made bumper or a lower priced aftermarket bumper, usually made in Asia. Because of the rusting my guess is you bought an aftermarket bumper. Also the relatively low price of $350 suggests to me that it was not a factory fresh new bumper. Check your Maaco invoice or call the shop in Glendale if you don't know which one you selected.

My guess is that you selected an aftermarket bumper to save some money. That would have been a good decision if you intended to stay in Arizona. But the aftermarket parts just don't hold up that well with high humidity, gravel and salt on the roads in Alaska.

If your original purchase was a factory OEM part you may have some recourse through Chrysler, but even Chrysler won't guarantee replacement parts to be free of problems. The roads in Alaska also may be a factor, with gravel and salt to nick the bumper which would accelerate the appearance of rust.

If you selected the cheaper part, it isn't fair to blame Maaco for problems that occurred when you moved from dry AZ to wet AK. They didn't know your plans.

My suggestion is that you will be happier in the long run if you save up some money and just buy a replacement part, a factory fresh OEM chrome bumper from Chrysler. It will probably cost you a couple hundred more than you paid before, but if you plan to keep this truck, your life will be more pleasant and stress-free if you don't have to look at that rusty part every time you get in the truck.

As for the Maaco employees who handle customer complaints at the home office, I know a few of these people personally. This is not the world's easiest job, yet all-in-all they do a pretty good job of satisfying customers. If someone hung up on you it may be that you were possibly a little upset and may have been a little rude or unkind, or you just were not ready to hear what you were being told.

In any case, this isn't the worst thing that could happen to you. You are in Alaska, a beautiful and exciting place to live and work. Wages are good and you can save up to fix this problem in a few weeks. Be glad you aren't in Ohio where everyone is laid off and going broke.

As a licensed autobody technician I've read your claim and you are correct in deserving your money back for the part only. Most bodyshops offer at a least a one year warranty on workmanship and lifetime on paint. However I can't believe I'm going to defend MAACO, but the bumper they installed wasn't made by them. Your problem is with the aftermarket manufacturer in Taiwan. The quality of these parts is sometimes lower and I've seen my own plastic/chrome grille for my car turn green in just a few months. They should have returned the part and received a new one and maybe get reimbursed themselves for the installation time.
