We hired this company to do a standard engine inspection on a pair of 1050 MAN engines.  We are a boat dealer that does around $15M a year in sales so this complaint is being filed out of principal.  We are very aware of what the cost should be on a job like this and at most it should cost around $2500.  The boat was on land so they did not even sea trial it.  Just 2-3 weeks prior we had the identical job completed by a more reputable MAN dealer who had to travel 80+ miles to the boat and spent far more time on it and it was $1800.

This company had us sign a credit card authorization form so we are not able to dispute the charges with Wells Fargo.  They did not make us sign any estimate and we figured that they would just be honest and charge us for time and material.  Material on a job like this would be an oil sampling kit, maybe some rags, etc.  Minor inexpensive stuff.

A couple of days later I find that they tried to charge me $10,000 for this job.  $5850 went through.  The reason it was so high was becuase they went ahead and decided it was a good idea to replace injectors, lines, hoses, do a valve job, etc.  I assume they were slow on work since they were able to jump right on the job, and clearly the standard engine inspection I asked for wasn't enough $$$ for them.  I asked them if this was some kind of a mistake or a joke and they said it wasn't "it was time for all of this work to be done on the engines"....I did not even own this boat yet!  It was a boat we were inspecting to take in on wholesale.  The owner, who also did not authorize this work, would not pay for it so they stuck us with the bill.

I spoke to 3 other MAN dealers who had nothing but terrible things to say about this dealer.  They are corrupt and are a terrible representation of MAN.  If you ever need them to do work for you first I would try Bass River Diesel since they are more reputable (we tried to get them but they were backed up 4-5 weeks) and worst case scenario if you have to use these scumbags I would make sure you get everything in writing and possibily make sure they notarize it as well.  Make sure you get in writing that if they decide they want to do more work than what you asked for that they need your authorization first.

We have reported them to BBB and we have another MAN dealer reaching out to their rep to report what they did to us.  We are not the first complaint.

If they would like to reach out to us to resolve this matter I will have this report removed but we have tried several times to cordially work this out with them and they told us to go to the owner of the boat to get him to help us pay the bill.....

A $10,000 engine survey

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Thursday, August 25, 2016

Anyone reading this will automatically know that an engine survey should never cost more than $3,000 on a pair of 1050 MANs.  This was a prepurchase engine survey, on a boat that was never even sea trialed!  Any other MAN dealer would have charged me $1500-2,000 max.  We buy 400+ boats a year and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on engine surveys, I have never had one exceed $3,000.

I think it is hilarious that you post this a year later in hope that I will not read it.  I could easily win a lawsuit over this but $10,000 is not worth my time.  It is definitely worth yours considering how you stole this money from a dealer who does a ton of businesss in your area.  Additionally, I thought you were only able to get $5-6k out of my credit card but you managed to steal the entire $10,000!

However, if I am just using unethical tactics and everything you did was on the up-and-up why don't you go ahead and post the bill and what I requested?  Anyone reading this who wants to discuss this matter with the other broker who was involved, from Viking Yachts, is more than welcome to contact me and I will give out their info.  No one could believe what these crooks did!  We thought it was a mistake at first, but when they refused to refund the card and told me to chase after the owner of the boat we were all shocked.

You guys took complete advantage of me because you knew I was not attending the survey, work was maybe slow for you, a standard engine inspection charge was not good enough, etc. etc. so you found a way to bill my card for $10k.  I could have almost gotten a full 1000 hour service for that much!  Did you need to clean the aftercoolers to inspect the motors?????  What the hell could you have possibly done on this engine inspection to make it cost even a fraction of that amount?  Please explain to everyone here.

Anyone reading this, have you ever spent over $3,000 inspecting a pair of diesel engines?  They didn't even do oil samples and it was $10k!!!!!!  They told me to go after the owner of the boat for the extra work that they did.....why should I have to do that and why should he have to pay for a bunch of work he didn't authorize either?  Does this not sound strange to anyone here?

This is not a legitimate company to deal with.  You have been warned.  I would win this lawsuit in a heartbeat but dealing with these scumbags is not worth my time.  They are thieves and deserve to be thrown in prison.

Again,

Send me a fair bill for an ENGINE INSPECTION (you know, what I asked for?), reimburse me for the money you stole, and this will go away.  If you are not sure what the standard cost of an engine inspection is let me know and I will put you in touch with some certified MAN dealers.  I was nothing but fair to you guys and I did not deserve this.  I would NEVER do this to a customer and you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Best Regards,

Jason Ruegg

False Statement

AUTHOR: Marine Motorworks Technology, Inc. - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, August 25, 2016

We have appropriate evidence, and documents that were sent to Mr. Jason Ruegg at Off the Hook Yacht Sales, such as a Work Authorization and Credit Card Form for him to fill out for an Engine Inspection/Survey, which he filled out himself and submitted back to our office.

An Estimate was followed clearly explaining to him, that these were for Parts needed it for the Engine Inspection/Survey and Labor will be billed once the job has been completed it.

The Technician kept Mr. Ruegg informed of all status, in reference the Engine Inspection/Survey.  Marine Motorwoks Technology, Inc. has never charged an unauthorized charge, the customer is always given an Estimate via e-mail, requesting approval from the customer, and lastly charge the approval sale, which this is the proper and honorable protocol of any business.  The Creidt Card Form agrees with the charges that were charges to this customer.

No relief sought by the complainant should be granted, because ha has used false and offensive statements.  Also, Mr. Ruegg disputed the charges with his bank, and the bank did not pursued to get the funds, because they were approved by him.

Marine Motorworks Technology, Inc. is an honorable and reputable company, that our customers has made us a resource of choice for yacht owners.
