I walked into the Mattress Giant on a Saturday without my wife and saw a bunch of business cards from other area mattress stores and when I asked what they were there for. I was told that those were competitors and that Mattress Giant had "crushed the competition" and they wanted people to see what a great deal they were.

For all I know they probably sent their own employees out to shop, gathered business cards with prices from other area matress stores and displayed them as competitors who couldn't match the Giant's prices.

This salesperson showed me a couple different mattresses and I kind of liked one particular model in a king that had a price tag of about $3200.00 dollars. I laid down on the bed, and asked questions about the coils, and padding etc. The salesman couldn't answer the questions, but he did say that his "area manager" was in that day and that if I was prepared to make a decision perhaps the "area manager" would let me have this model for $1899.00, mind you, this was the first bed I laid on.

I said I was going to look at other models, and he kept pushing me to buy the $3200.00 or $1899.00 or whatever the price was supposed to be. He excused himself for a bit and I continued checking the rest of the beds out.

The salesman comes back and starts getting even pushier, and says "I just talked to the "area manager" and if you (meaning me) are prepared to decide right now, you (once again meaning me) could have the bed for $1699.00, which was an offer too good to be true, he couldn't believe that the "area manager" would give me such a great deal."

Well I decided that since they came down twice on the price, that it must be a really good deal. I sat down to start the order process and before it was finished, I thought this is too big of a decision to make without my wife. I said that I had to get my wife in to lay on the bed too before I would spend that much money. I thanked him and said I liked the mattress very much and I'd be back Sunday with her.

I stood up and turned toward the door, and the salesman then offered the same K set for $1099.00. I thought to myself, "if I had bought the bed for $1899.00 or even $1699.00 I'd have paid $600.00 to $800.00 extra!" I told him no and started to leave, he then said "can't you make up your own mind?." I thought "screw you". It dawned on me that they probably never sold that set for $3200.00 or even $1899.00 for that matter. They were trying to gouge me and I nearly paid an extra $600.00 for the bed. Now that is a RIPOFF!

#4 UPDATE Employee

Seriously?

AUTHOR: Anon. - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, April 12, 2010

I will give you one concession and that is that the employee wasn't able to give you any information about the mattress you were looking at.  If he did not know he should have found out.

Now to the shocking.

Basically what you are upset about is that the employee dropped the price.  He went from making money, to making less money, to making even less money, etc.  It is every businesses goal to make a profit on what they are selling.  It sounds like he gave you a considerable price drop and to my knowledge not one that can be done on a regular basis.  He might have been short of a monthly quota and instead of him getting paid he was trying to take one for the team earn your business and offer you a pretty good deal.  Your dealing with a company that has approx. 430 stores.  That is a significant number and one that is not attained by screwing people over.

My other question is if you needed your wife to make a decision why were you there in the first place without her.  I don't walk into a store unless I have the ability to by something at that store.  I am not saying don't be a consumer and shop around by any means.  All I am saying if you are going go to have your wife there with you.  How would you feel if I showed up and wasted your time?

Better yet, how would you feel if I showed up wasted your time and then blasted you on a rip off website about you giving me more than half off?  Pretty inconsiderate.  It is his job to ask for your business.  Why would he go to his area manager and get an additional discount for you when you can't buy anything anyway it just makes him look like a bad salesman which he very well might be if he can't tell you about the mattress.  It is amazing to me how you can critique someone without looking at it from their perspective.

The world of sales

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, May 10, 2009

I worked for "THE GIANT" for about a year and a half. I managed a store for them & was a trouble shooter that 'pinch hit' managed various stores for them in Florida when needed.
The tactics of the first rebuttal as to high pressure are exactly what goes on in every sales situation in most every company. In Mattress Giant, the salesman can negotiate the price down to 1/2 of the marked retail (if needed to close the sale) and techniques like calling a sales manager are typical sales techniques to create urgency. If the cust is told that that price can be held, what's to cause a buying decision immediately? If the buyer thinks he has to move now, or lose the opportunity, he is more likely to move forward. That's what SALESMEN do, they SELL. That's why they are called salesman.
Many times, I gave a "special deal" of buy one & get one free. My profit margin was very low, but I made my monthly sales totals more often than previous managers of the same store.
The $80 frame was mostly sold for $40-$60 and is worth it. The MATTRESS PROTECTOR was also sold for about $40, or mostly $1 to cover the company requirement that we sell a certain % of mattress pads. They do however eliminate bed bugs, lice, stains, etc. The manufacturer's warranty is voided if you get a stain/tear on the bed & the mattress protector has a guarantee that if you get a stain they will professionally clean the bed if you can't get it out.
Mattress Giant is no worse than any sales organization in trying to create the illusion that they are giving the cust a special opportunity that motivates the cust to buy NOW.

jonathon, people like you are ridiculous, you made min wage because you suck as a salesperson we are so glad you dont work here anymore the protector was important because the matt stays sanitary, and keeps mattress from getting dustmites, and stains which would void a warranty, it would be a disservice to not educate your guests with this information. go somewhere else with your bad attitude. see ya

Just like mike had described they still use the same sleazy pushy sales tactics, they prices themselves three times higher than the local retailers . don't buy from this company. as an employee of this piece of crap.

I was instructed to be just as pushy and jam this crappy mattress pad for 80 dollars down every customers throat! and they charge 80 dollars for a frame when it should cost no more than 30. tell your friends and family not to shop here . and just like you mr consumer this company screws their employees too its the first job I have have had that no matter how much i would sell I would get nothing more than more than minnimum wage its the worst expereinec i have had. if enough people stop shopping there maybe they will go out of business.
