In June 2006 I received a letter from the Law Office of Harold E. Scherr, Attorneys at Law in Florida, claiming I owed $4,381.88 to MBNA, which they were trying to collect. I answered by certified letter, less than a week later, disputing the debt, asking for supporting documents from the original creditor, and asking them to never contact me about it (I used the suggested response letter that was posted on this forum or a similar one). I never heard from them again, but...

In April 2008 I received an identical letter from the Law Office of Thomas Landis, Esq. in PA. I sent the same response, asking for information from the original creditor. Never heard from them again.

Yesterday I received a call from the Penta Group, TX, saying the same (although they may have quoted a larger sum, I am supposed to receive a letter from them soon). I asked what I would have to do to get some proof that this IS my debt, and I said I am disputing it. The woman - said her name is Alexis Burton - said that I will keep hearing from collectors until I pay the debt, because even if I ask her company not to contact me again, the same I did with the other two, my debt will be sold to another collector and so on.

To clarify - I do not owe this money. To my knowledge, I never had a credit card with MBNA, but I may not be aware. However, I have always paid my debts and balances and I was NEVER contacted by anyone at MBNA about ANY debt! And there was never any note about it on my credit report - until I heard from the first collector, two years ago.

Could someone tell me waht steps I should take? Should I contact MBNA directly - since they sold the debt, will they pay any attention? If I get bumped from collector to collector, my credit will be permanently damaged - how can I put a stop to this? I would really appreciate your help!

Thank you!
