My wife and I have had MCI as our long distance carrier for several years. Last month my wife had to make an urgent trip to Illinois because of a critical illness in the family.

Naturally, I told her to call me every day and keep me posted on things. "Just use your calling card", I said. (We had used it only once or twice before in all the years we had it). Little did I or my wife know the price that would be involved.

Here are a few examples of the charges to make a call on the MCI Calling Card.

DALLAS to DONGOLA, ILL. 7min. $10.50
Dongola,Ill. to Columbus, NM. 9min. $13.00
Dongola,Ill. to Princeton, KY. 17min. $23.00

You do the math. This is over $1.40 per minute for a phone call !!!

Needless to say, after getting our $489.73 phone bill, we certainly will NEVER use the MCI Calling Card again.
As a matter of fact, I'm going to put it in my blender and puree that sucker!

Oh yes, I'll pay the bill. I was suckered once but I won't be suckered by MCI again.

Why do some folks feel obliged to defend scurrilous corporations like MCI/WorldCom when they have a proven track record of thievery and outright fraudulent business practices? I'll never understand it! However, I am thankful for a few honest people, like yourself, who are willing to step up to the plate and expose these slime-buckets for what they are.

I worked for MCI back when it was a great company. I left shortly after McGowen passed away. He was actually a lawyer that got it from a businessman and took on AT&T. When I worked for MCI, no one knew this company. it really was a great company that valued it's employees and fought to lower phone bills, not increase them.

I saw the company go downhill after Mcgowen died. I was one of the few smart ones. I cashed out my 401k and company stocks in 1997 prior to the Worldcomm disaster. I made a great profit and Worldcomm got nothing.

I met a girl who had MCI Long Distance and was very unhappy with their services. I convinced her to cancel the service and get rid of the $6+ a month fee whether she used the service or not. Like some of you, they would not let her go. I finally called and said enough is enough, any more calls or letters or checks would be considered harrassment and dealt with in a court of law. They stopped but it took threats, asking kindly did NOT work.

I know that there are many wonderful employees at MCI, I worked there for 11 years. You would think a company like MCI would not have to resort to fine print and would be more upfront regarding Calling Card Rates. They certainly are not very competitive and take advantage of of their customers trust. The original poster of this thread was a dedicated MCI customer til they breached that trust. It's a competitive business and MCI is losing more everyday. Bernie may be collecting millions and continuing to ruin this once fine company, but his cellmates trade him for cigarettes and that makes me very happy.

Continue on with the MCI bashing. It makes me more thankful I left that company and have nothing to do with them, whatsoever! As my title says "They will never get my money"

I worked for this company when it went bankrupt. I know how well they inform people...because I saw people lose their jobs for not telling someone the charges they were agreeing to. However, it's not reasonable to have a rep read off every possible rate depending on where you're calling. You wouldn't write it down, anyway. And if you want that information, call and ask for it.

There's something called being an informed consumer. If you don't read your contract, you won't know what you're agreeing to. If you don't ask what the rate is for long distance calls, you can't know what they'll be. And you can't get mad at them for what they charge, because it's a standard rate depending on where you're calling and from where. You didn't ask first, so I have no sympathy.

It's like getting mad at your cellphone company for roaming charges. You know your phone's going into roaming...and you make the call anyway.

You, David, knew that your call was long distance. You knew that you didn't know what the charges would be. You did it anyway, and then got mad because things didn't go your way.

What's wrong with a company trying to get old customers to come back, especially trustworthy ones that paid their bills? You're one of the good customers, David. You just need to remember to inform yourself in the future, before taking on charges.

There is currently a law suit against MCI and world com so you may like to get the information about that and see if you can also add your wisdom ie expoerence to that. Currently if type into your browser cumsumer advocates you will get to a site that will tell you that they are looking for complaints for that company to add to thier law suit. This maybe worth while if you really want to be heard, and speak out about how the company ripped you off.. just wanted to let you know... say it loud !!!

Just to keep this thread alive and in front so people can continue to learn about Worldcom, I have here the email I sent to Bernie Ebbers the day I got let go from Tele-TV.

Now keep in mind that this email was sent directly to Bernie's work email address approximately 2 months before the scandal broke about Worldcom's accounting fraud. It was well known within the company around the time of Enron (about 5 months earlier) that these crooks were scamming and stealing. Unfortunately most people were in no position to do anything about it. Myself being one of them. I was personally told 6 months before being let go to inflate value on thousands of pieces of equipment during a yearly inventory. The amount of the inflation......$1.5 billion!! Actual value of the equipment.....ZERO. It was all slated for landfill. And sent to a landfill 3 weeks after the inventory was taken.

And now....the email......

"Dear Crook,

Congrats! You have successfully spent 3.5 billion dollars of your companies money to lower the standard of television and wireless service around the country, throw hundreds if not thousands of people out of work, and generally run legitimate money making business into the ground. You should be ashamed of yourself. I will look forward to seeing you try and plead the 5th in front of congress when MCI/Worldcom goes the way of Enron. Your a crook and a piss poor CEO. Hopefully there is a wistleblower in your boardroom to put an end to this joke, and, make you pay back the millions you stole to cover your margin calls. Your wireless internet services in Bakersfield CA will never fly. Your attempt to do the same in LA will fail as well. You knew this 2 years ago and still pushed ahead with unproven and unavailable technology. So in order to cut your losess, what did you do......you shut down even more money making divisions. I guess this is the kind of management I (and the world) should expect from a manager of a Holiday Inn that then went on to manage a trucking company. How long do you expect to keep this up and yank the worlds chains?

All your points are moot! Did you read the fine print...who cares? Did MCI really rip you off...who cares?

The real point is that MCI is.....a den of vipers. All the so called "employees" that have posted here are about to cower.

Lets have a history lesson shall we?

MCI was purchased by Worldcom in the late 90's. It was absorbed quickly and most of its upper management was canned. Replaced by Worldcom upper management which is still in power to this day. Shortly after that, Worldcom went on a buying spree unseen in the history of man. This was all led by Bernie Ebbers the now disgraced ex-CEO and convicted greedy munchkin of inbred Mississippi fame. They bought everything in the telecommunications field they could. Worldcom has NEVER created a product on their own. Everything they have ever sold be it an actual product or just a service has been the brainchild of some poor smaller company they bought (my old company being one of them!).

Now flash forward. Bernie is convicted of creating the largest business fraud ever with Worldcom. Worldcom has changed its name to MCI to hide from the scandal. ITS STILL THE SAME COMPANY! Even the upper management (except the CFO and CEO) are the same!

Now here is the kicker. Bernie Ebbers had a contract with Worldcom that extends into any form the company may transform into (that includes the bankruptcy and the name change). That contract states that Bernie will receive $25 million a year for life if he were to leave the company....for ANY REASON! Even if he spends the rest of his days behind bars...he still gets that $25 million a year.

Now out of spite for ruining my old job of 15 years (lost my 401k...my back vacation pay...my job, everything in 2002) I never will use MCI for anything. But even if I wasnt an ex-Tele TV employee (thats the name it had before Worldcom got its grubby hands on it), I would not want even a single penny going to that crook yearly.

So it doesnt matter if MCI has a great rating or not. It doesnt matter if David looked at the service carefully or not. Screw looking at the service.

LOOK AT WHERE YOUR MONEY IS GOING IF YOU GO WITH MCI.......TO A CONVICTED CROOK THAT RUINED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLES LIVES.

I could care less what the "employees" that post here say. They are the biggest fools. They are still working for and making money for a convicted felon.

You hit the nail squarely on the head concerning MCI.

This den of insensitive vipers rapes their own customer base. How much trouble would it have been for a customer service rep to show a little concern and offer to give me a one-time break. And...if he/she didn't have that authority, why couldn't I have been referred to a supervisor?
Instead, I was kept on hold time and time again and when I was finally able to speak with someone, that person was totally uninterested in anything but "PAYMENT IN FULL".

MCI makes me SICK and I will campaign against this vile pack of ravenous wolves as long as I have strength in my body to stroke a keyboard.

I know several people who have discontinued service with MCI due to suddenly huge ridiculous bills or poor service. My own parents discontinued their service after their one year "plan" ran out and they were charged a ridiculous amount per minute per call.
Another colleague discontinued her MCI service when her entire phone service was mysteriously cut off - it took over two weeks to resolve it, after a lot of finger pointing between MCI and SBC as to whose problem it was.
Bottom line - MCI is the Providian of long distance services. They take advantage of their consumers - not realizing, of course, how many potential customers they are losing in the process. Wal-Mart figured that for every customer they lose due to poor customer service, it costs them $200,000 over the course of that person's life time. MCI should re-examine their policies. It is all well and good for consumers to be well informed about their calling card rates and to read the fine print in any transaction - but franlkly, most consumers don't expect to be taken advantage of in that manner. That is what companies like MCI count on. They are in for the short haul profit - not the long haul corporate citizen deal. Maybe that is why they had to declare bankruptcy. They are not concerned with customer relations.

you could have gotten some of that money back on whats called 2 fee for the calling cards to make the rates a lot cheaper and for the jobs going over seas there was alot of us that lost are jobs paid severance and now went back to mci but yes i agree it should have stayed in the usa but they were down sizeing to sell out as you might have heard now its trying to join with time warner so well see what happenes then and but there is alot of good reps out there in custmer service and there is bad ones too

i hate to say just ask for a sup and report the bad ones and ask for there sup if you have too there is always something they can do to fix the bad reps and again on the calling card could have just asked for the 2 fee and cut that bill back to what it should have been but with all companys cant make every one happy but i think they got your point that you were upset

Hi, My name is Josh and I am a customer service rep at MCI. This complaint especially bothered me. Ok when mci signs up a new customer in the calling card situation, we ask if you would like to recieve a calling card. Any questions about the rates are answered if there is a question. I cant help but wonder....Did you ask?

Secondly, when we send the card the rates for the calling card are included, there is the second opportunity to see the rates. Maybe you are correct that some representatives do not speak english very well but as a consumer did you read? The rates are postedin the same size writing as the rest of the information, no small prints. I personally would not use a service that i did not know the cost on.

The calling card rates are 1.75 surcharge and 1.25 per min, yes that is a high rate but if you have a flat tire and are standing in a phone booth with no change would you take collect call rates such as 4.99 to connect plus 0.99 per min? This service does benefit people who inform themselves before just using.

And yes as a consumer it is your duty to read a service agrement before using the product is it not? Now in the situation with the illness in the family, would you have rather paid mci calling card rates or not been able to make contact?

I am certain that I never spoke with you regarding my dispute with MCI. How do I know that? Because I never spoke with anyone who had the courtesy you have shown.

As I stated in my original report, I had been a customer with MCI for several years. My average monthly bill was around $115.00. I crunched the numbers and discovered that I did over $10,000 in business with MCI during that period of time. On top of that...my bills were always paid before the due date.

I feel that I had a valid complaint. However, when I called for assistance, I was treated very rudely and literally kept on "hold" until I just gave up on several occasions. (That attitude is what really hacked me off). The customer service reps I spoke with were unconcerned and quite frankly didn't seem to care at all about my situation. I was certainly never offered a "credit" of any sort.

As a result, they lost me as a customer and I have influenced at least two other individuals to discontinue their service with MCI also.

I guess this vendetta I have against MCI has become a hobby of sorts. When I have nothing better to do, I check the continual flow of RipOff Reports on MCI and occasionally file another tirade of my own. (I like to razz Karen and Sharon a little). My primary objective is to let it be known that MCI is taking their customer base for granted. Hopefully, at some point, the movers and shakers at MCI will take heed and take action to correct the problems and show a little courtesy to their customers.

I am sorry to hear about MCI's outsourcing of over 5,000 jobs. I always hate to hear of anyone losing their job. However, some of those so-called customer service reps probably deserved it. (The ones I spoke with certainly did).

Anyway...Thanks again for your letter. You sound like someone who is trying to do the best you can with what you have to work with. I only wish I had been able to speak with you when I was trying to get some help. I would probably still be a customer with MCI and I wouldn't be typing these reports.

Hi,
I work for mci as a small business supervisor and have previously worked as a residential supervisor and may have talked to you on the phone before. First off, I agree that the calling card rates are outrageous and I do educate the consumer of the rates and to probably only use them in emergency situations. We unfortunately cannot tell the customer to buy a calling card from walmart, etc. because we will actually get in trouble for doing that. So I am sorry what had happened and that the representative had not told you about the rates at the time of sign up.

Second, I totally agree with everyone about the foreign people now working for mci, trust me, everyone in my center hates the fact that mci laid off over 5,000 people and sent their jobs overseas. I feel very sorry for transferring people to someone in Buenos Aires and knowing that the rep cannot speak English.
Final comment: Unfortunately every phone carrier, credit card company, and customer service and company in the world has unhappy and happy customers.

I try on every call I take to make sure my customers are happy, issuing thousands of dollars of credit a day to make the customer happy, even if they are not staying with mci. It happens, and that's life.

I filed another comment at my report which hasn't gotten listed yet. But the lawyer suggested (with a good reason) that I try one more time to make contact. I got a girl in India and it was maddening, but I wrote all about that. What MCI doesn't realize is that when you have dissatisfied customers they can't be silenced. I am a desk clerk at one of the busiest hotels on I-77. It is right at the exit and we fill up nearly every night. I handle the shift that gets more people who come down to the desk just to chat for a while. I have talked to 100's of people from every state in the country. I have told many, many people about my experience -- and, they have told me theirs. I have my own Rip-off report right there at the desk. I have heard about lies, theft and so many have told me that I will never get that money back without going to small claims court no matter how many times they promise to send a check. It was one of those customers who tipped me off about MCI's outsourcing to India.

Hey, I hear you about these people that can't even speak English. And, after you have waited for 45 minutes on the phone at that. But, here is what a lot of people don't know, and I just found out myself. The chances are we are not even getting people in this country. It is called outsourcing. 90% of all outsourcing is sent to India.

MCI and other big companies are paying people in India about $2.00 an hour to field complaint calls. To me this is the equivalent of saying, "Here is a quarter call someone who cares." Yeah right, don't want to bother with your customers complaints? Send them out of the country. Especially when you owe your customer money back because of an over-charge as with me. When people call to try to get their money the oldest trick in the book is to pretend that you can't speak English or put someone on who can't.

David, call in to customer service and tell them that you no longer want to be contacted by MCI. There is a company list to stop tele marketing calls and mailings as well, it takes about 10 days to get you off the list but lasts for 5 years. Only thing is if you change address or number you get removed. Sorry about what hapened, I tell everyone about the calling card, it is really really bad but do the above and they will stop calling you.

Yes, you're right! I should have taken my microscope out and read the fine print in my "welcome package" as you so ably advise. I certainly advise anyone else who may be considering MCI as their long distance provider to do likewise. By the way, since you readily admit that MCI's calling card rates are expensive, how about suggesting that your customers never use their MCI calling cards? In the interest of customer care, you might go ahead and recommend SAMS CLUB or WALMART calling cards in your so-called "welcome package". Now wouldn't that be nice?

As for "payment for services rendered"... my account is PAID IN FULL! If you have the brains to check my account, go ahead and see for yourself!

You also say that you have "thousands of very satisfied customers". While that claim is undoubtedly true, judging from the RIP-OFF REPORTS on this website, I would venture a guess that you also have thousands of dissatisfied customers as well. Or should I say, ex-customers?
Am I going to extremes? I don't think so!

As an employee in the collections dept of MCI, I read your comments with great interest. As for your calling card, you have the responsibility of reading everything that comes in your Welcome Package. You have only yourself to blame for that. We will be one of the first to tell you that the calling card IS expensive. You could have bought one at Wal-Mart, Sams, etc.

MCI is not out to rip you or anyone else off - we only ask for payment for services rendered.

We have thousands of very satisfied customers - obviously or we would not be in business and growing. We also hear many complaints about other phone companies - all companies have happy and unhappy customers. But sir - you are going to extremes aren't you?

Believe it or not, after paying my outrageous telephone bill and disconnecting my service with MCI, some raghead from Afghanistan or somewhere calls me and asks if I would restore my service with MCI. He said (in very broken English) that he was prepared to offer me $100.00 to sign up.
I laughed out loud! I told him it would take 10 times that amount!
