This company has been sending me letters to settle a debt that is 5 years old, just recently i received a call harrassing me to pay them. The original debtor has already charged off the debt and now Merchants Credit Guide wants to collect it. I was actually considering paying them off because they were offering me to pay half of the debt. Good thing I checked my credit report and proceeded to checking that agency and leaded me to this site. Now that i have informed myself i will deal with them.

Read Dealing with Collectors 101.

Although the debt is time barred - you do need to know HOW to deal with this bottomfeeder to get them off your back.

They will not stop trying to collect until YOU STOP THEM!

There is a statute of limitations for credit card debt, which is the amount of time that they can successfully take legal action against you for the debt. This time period varies for each state. You can find this time period for your state by going to the link below and looking under "Open Accounts."

(((Redacted)))

If your debt is older than the time period listed for your state, they can no longer defeat you in any court action because the debt is time-barred. This does not mean that they can't try to collect the debt...it just means that they've lost the power to take legal action....all they can do after this point is annoy you...
