I went in for an oil change and watched as one of their "mechanics" loosened one of my tie rods with a wrench.  I wondered what he was doing because I saw the wrench and he was no where near the oil pan.

A few minutes later they came to the waiting room and asked me to come with them where they showed me the tie rod they had loosened and then tried to tell me that someone had used a blow torch to do it and it needed to be repaired.

I tightened the tie rod back up with my hand and told them to change the oil and leave everything else alone.  The bottom line is, I won't go back because I don't think they can be trusted.

of course they work on commission

AUTHOR: cephas - (United States of America)

All auto shops work on commission, some make it look like hourly wage but the truth be known (take it from an ex auto mechanic and manager of a midas shop in NJ) the only way to get mechanics to move their lazy butts and look for things that are actually worn out on your vehicle, is pay them by how much stuff they find.

In dealorships they use service writers that after the tech (who may be an honest technician) hands the ticket to the service writer things start popping up like majic. It doesn't matter if the car just had brakes if the service manual says it needs brake work at 60,000 miles. And if you are not carefull you spend money needless and both the tech and service writer get extra money.

I refused to be a thief and wound up being let go. The auto industry is not your grandfathers repair shop. Please ask for your old parts when doing brakes when they say you need rotors, then have a reputable guy measure the rotor for thickness and runnout if that rotor a) didn't need to be touched or could have been machined - you got them red handed. b) if they don't give you a completely filled out inspection report, containing brake pad and rotor specs and if it is not signed by the tech - you got them red handed.

Be a smart, ask questions and if you feel rushed or pressured tell them you want your car back. Also if the store is company owned call the corporate office, believe me you will get results.

    Good luck.
