I went to Mittelwest German Shepherds with the sole intent to show and breed my dog. Grant Smith showed us two three month old female german shepherds he claimed they were keeping them for themselves. I was looking for the most driven dog of the two and fell in love with one. He told me that those dogs were more expensive because they were show quality and came from parents that were world class champions.
In good faith I paid this breeder $3000.00 for this dog. Upon signing the contract I had questions about hip dysplasia and elbow certification. He stated that the they couldn't guarantee the outcome of the hips because they have to wait until they are approximately 18-24 months to have xrays. He never mentioned or elaborated on elbows. The contract states that if you are not happy with your puppy you could return it for a replacement dog.
I have bonded with my dog now its been about a year. Upon speaking with other breeders, I was told to have preliminary xrays done on my dogs elbows and hips. My dog is 15 months old. The vet informed me that one of her elbows has a genetic defect and its the beginning of arthritis. Her hips are also questionable. He told me that this is a genetic defect and that I should not breed this dog with this knowledge.
I am very upset. I want everyone to know that they do have knowledge of this and continue to pass this trait on. Once I get all of the certified documentation, I will be persuing this. If anyone wants to know who the Sire and Dam are I will be happy to give you the information because those pups are likely to have the same genetic defect. Beware! They are professional when it comes to deception. I will prove it and pass this on with fact to the Illinois Attorney Generals Office.
