I am a federal civil service employee and had a membership at kinetix fitness on watson blvd. When I joined, I wanted to pay or 2 people as one family membership, but told since we were not related would have to be 2 separate memberships, but would be given the same deal - no contract, 19.95 per month. i accepted the terms and joined.
Several months later it was clear the federal government was going to furlough civil service empoyees starting in July (early July). I immediately started evaluating to see what I could cut since I would be losing one days pay per week, working only 4 days a week. Of course the gym memberships would be top of the list since it IS possible for me to use the fitness facility on Robins AFB.
I went to the gym early June to cancel, and told I have go to National Fitness web site ...I couldn't do anything at the local gym (except, apparently, join!). So I did and was given 3 choices to cancel membership. Online, fax, letter. I decided FAX would probably be quickest, knowing they would still taken out June, but since it was before my 30 day billing period I may be able to avoid Julys payment.
I will billed in June, and again July. Honestly thought "well, they got me. another month". I went to the local gym to see if there is anything they can do to "undo" that last payment. Again I was directed to the National Fitness web site. I was't willing to go through what I was sure I would have to go through to get my money back, so I let it go.
August, after 3 weeks of only working 4 days a week, I was billed again. This time there was insufficient funds in my account to cover it. Remember, TWO accounts...TWO NSF Charges. Furious, I went to the Gym, they again said they can do nothing. I left straight from there and went to the web site and went through their "cancellation" screen. No confirmation number, no confirmation email. It appeared to be just a message board. So I went and FAXd the cancellation again, also, hoping one of them would "take".
September, I was billed for the July bounced charges, and for August. Two months, two memberships. I can't begin to explain how furious I was. I went to my bank and they said I could put a stop payment, but it would cost me $25. I explained this was not my fault! It didn't matter. I paid the fee and stopped payment to National Fitness/ aka Kinetix Fitness.
I have never had an returned item since opening this account. Now I have TWO. I am applying for a mortgage since the furlough is over and now they want my bank statement. I know this is going to cost me in higher interest, or maybe they won't underwrite the loan at all. All I have now is extreme anxiety until they receive my statement and I make it past closing in 7 days. I feel like I'm about to die with anxiety.
Lesson: ABSOLUTELY make the "Stop Payment" action just a natural part of cancelling your membership...to ANYTHING. I may be paying a huge price for this and I am so worried.
