My wife and I are senior citizens and because of our low income, we have been renting an apartment at the Crestview Apartments in Parkersburg. As per our lease agreement, part of our rent is being paid by the USDA under their rural program. This has helped us a great deal since our income is only 1400 a month. There has been problems here as there seems to be in any low income property. There were drug dealers but the police and management did their job and got rid of them. Now the complex has single parents, single people, and seniors.

We have been here three years and through all the problems we have enjoyed the place. Now the only noise we have is the children playing outside, this we enjoy because our grandkids live so far away we never see them. The people are friendly and it has all become a family.

The biggest problem over the past year has been the lack of concern by the management. Repairs have not been done and things are falling apart. We are constantly told, there is no money, there is no money. This from a company with properties all over Iowa.

Now it looks like we must move. On labor day we all received a letter saying the the USDA will no longer pay for their part. The management company says that in order to stay, we must now pay the full price for our apartment. So our rent goes from 350 a month to 597 a month. Our income has not increased but we are being told to pay more. This is true for everyone. Then we were told if we do not pay then the company will close down the apartments by December first. Some Christmas present?

I know there has been people who live in Parkersburg who want this property to go away. They don't like "our kind". Seven years ago, our town (pop. 2100) suffered a tornado and most of the town was destroyed. When that happened, everyone got money from the government, new homes, new cars, new everything. Except our property, the tornado passed us. This property received nothing. So half the town is brand new and the rest is the same as it was before the tornado. The town split into the blessed (tornado got them) and the low class (tornado missed them).

We may not have a new house and car, but we are no different than they. But this town and the government and the management company are working to get rid of us. We have no money to move. We have no transportation. If they close down then we will become homeless. Do you know a family that might take us in for Christmas? My wife is handicapped and needs special care but no one seems to care.
