Nationwide offers a great price online. However, AFTER they obtain your financial information to draft payments, they add things to the policy causing the premium to sky rocket.
They added my daughter to the policy without my knowledge. My daughter is 30 years old, married for 5 years, living in her own home with her husband and 2 children. She has not lived with me, nor been on my policy for nearly 10 years. However, Nationwide added her, which made my premium increase over $500 for six months.
When I contacted Nationwide about this, they are requiring that I send them documented proof of my daughters current residency. Otherwise, nothing can be done. I have to provide them with her mortgage information, copies of utility bills, and copy of her driver\'s license.

Is this legal?

Now I am not here to rebut, but to educate. I am a licensed agent and former employee of Nationwide. Now the reason why they added your daughter was because you purchased your policy online. The crappy part of purchasing policies online is that the computer systems have no idea who is really living in your household.  There is a validation tool that a third party company provides in finding other possible drivers in the household. The reason why they do this is to make sure that the policy is being rated correctly for all drivers that might have access to the vehicles. Its not that they are trying to get more money out of you, its just that they want to rate correctly in case that driver takes your vehicle and then causes an accident. That is why you should never purchase a policy online from ANY insurance company. Not all customers are created equal and a licensed insurance agent can make adjustments at the time of binding the policy to ensure you are being rated correctly. I'm sorry you had to go through that ordeal. I had many customers over the years that I had to re-write policies for due to situations like this and I'm not just talking about Nationwide. I wrote for Progressive and Titan as well. Best of luck and remember to talk to your local agent, you'll be glad you took the extra time.
